If you have the green bag too, you’d have been fine if you’d used it inside the black bag. Good stuff.

I have the green bag also. Didn’t think I would need it on this particular night but it would’ve come in handy. Thank you, my friend!

Hello, thanks for the video. I used the exact same sleep system in Colorado western slopes and when is cold I covered my bivy with pine branches to add insulation (I used it also under) . In your situation I will have used the leaves.

Suggestion: Try cutting a wooden wedge from the first medium-sized piece of wood you split, and use that once you baton an entry crack. That would save your knife, and put more leverage into the split.

I'm here in east Tennessee as well, I live on Norris Lake. I love my MSS, it's my favorite piece of gear, ILBE Main Pack is my 2nd. Nice video man, just subbed. I don't know where you're at but we have some cool stores for bushcraft and survival. More to Life Outfitters in Clinton Tn, and of course Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville. I'm sure you know about these, but I thought I'd run it by you just in case.

Hi, thanks for the video :) I’ve got MSS too and I love it! I’m thinking about upgrading my pad to Thermarest Xtherm. What size of the pad have you used? The pad is quite thick and I’m worrying if there is still space for the sleeping bag to decompress. Does it work freely or the setup is a bit squeezy?
@joshinthewoodsyt
@joshinthewoodsyt 2 ай бұрын
It was fine for me inside the bivy but it could be used on the outside of the bivy as well. I just wanted to keep it in place and that’s easier when it’s inside. I use the regular size pad and it’s great for something like this, where I want to slip it inside the bivy. If I’m tent camping I like a wider pad. The regular Xtherm is pretty narrow.
@filipbasara9017
@filipbasara9017 2 ай бұрын
@@joshinthewoodsyt thank you for your quick response! Putting pad inside seems to be much more convenient and save for the pad. I wish it would be possible with the wide version. Regular is narrow indeed but it is the only way to go inside, is that correct? Do you think the xtherm is strong enough to use it on the ground without any layer under it?
@joshinthewoodsyt
@joshinthewoodsyt 2 ай бұрын
@@filipbasara9017I wouldn’t use it on the bare ground without some sort of ground sheet. Xtherm’s are too pricey to be taking any chances with. I’ve never tried any other pad inside the MSS so I’m not sure about if anything larger will fit or not.

Cedar bark, one of my favorite natural tinders, we have good fatwood in this area, I keep some of the best pieces I found in my fire kit. Is that a Mora Bushcraft Black or the Pathfinder edition? I have a Carbon Garberg in a similar dangler sheath to yours, I think it's a JRE Brown Leather Dangler as my main knife, I also have a Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe and Silky Big Boy 2000 XL Folding Saw.
@joshinthewoodsyt
@joshinthewoodsyt 2 жыл бұрын
I love cedar bark too. My go-to tinder when I’m out there. That was the Mora Bushcraft Black. I’m wanting a Gransfor Bruk axe. Just haven’t been able to pull the trigger yet. I use a Silky sometimes too but mostly the Boreal 21. Both are great.
@joeyjones9041
@joeyjones9041 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshinthewoodsyt yeah man they're both great saws, I waited a while to get my Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe, my wife has the Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe and Silky Gomboy 240, same Mora Carbon Garberg as me. I got both Gransfors axes early in 2020 with stimulus and paychecks coming in lol, they are really nice axes, worth the money in my opinion. Before that, I used the Husqvarna Multipurpose Forest Axe, it's about half the cost of the Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe, and a great axe, I had to polish the grind marks out of the bit, and I took a file to the original grind to give it a better edge geometry, Skillcult here on KZbin has a great series of videos on it. That was kinda fun in itself, a learning experience. But even as is, the Husqvarna is an awesome axe, especially for the price. Just put a few coats of linseed oil on the handle and you're ready to go. Hults Bruks makes a cheaper line of axes as well, I think they're called the Agdor line or something like that. They have one identical to the Husqvarna Multipurpose Forest Axe because that's who males the Husqvarna. They also have a Camp Axe if you'd rather have something a bit smaller, more in the Small Forest Axe or Hatchet size range. The only real complaint about the Husqvarna is the sheath, it needs to be upgraded, but Etsy has some and Review Outdoor Gear makes some really nice ones available on Amazon and other websites. I promise you'd love the Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe tho, it is worth the money and you can pass it down to whoever you want, for generations. I felt that way towards it, the Modular Sleep System, and all sorts of gear, but I'm glad I got them all, makes my outings much more enjoyable. Plus I have them for life. Anyways, take it easy brother and stay safe out there.

I guess having been trained a certain way the video made me cringe at points, as the advantage of the MSS system, or other systems like a Vietnam Ranger Roll or old school cowboy roll is to have everything ready to throw down and sleep in within 1 minute. Snap the black bag into the bivvy before you leave the house. Insert the deflated mattress pad inside the roll and roll it all up together. This way, you just throw the Bivvy down, inflate done. Too many bags n stuff sacks being taken out of the bag. Takes too long to clear out in case of an emergency. Of course, with that said for best practice army protocol, the fact he brought beer…..who the heck cares. Take your time. I’d rather camp w beer and be slow not following protocol. :)
