This clearly shows why you don't need to "upgrade" your Traction from 6 volts to 12. On my 54 11B, the spark advance isn't connected-it starts just fine without messing with the timing. Or I'm just too lazy to mess with it.

Yeah I have zero interest in doing a 12v conversion. A well maintained car will start right up on 6v. I do notice better starting behavior in all conditions with the timing retarded

@@hadlock My 49 11BL starts better when I retard the spark, then advance it once it's running. It has the earlier complex Solex carb and a spark advance on the steering column. The 54 with the later 32 PBIC Solex starts just fine in all conditions. After sitting all winter when I go to start it for the first time in months I have to smack the carb with a rubber hammer so the float will drop as it keeps the needle valve closed. I really ought to do something about that. But piss on it, it works just fine.

Before restoration, my 11BN was difficult to start. The restoration started with replacing the wiring harness. Even in mildly cold weather, I don't need to the choke. Usually starts immediately. And yes, I retained the 6 volt electrics. The primary problem with these cars, or any other of a similar age, is the wiring harnesses are corroded. Converting a car to 12 volt doesn't solve a thing, and I think actually introduces new issues.

Yeah this was taken in the south. It's cold enough for me to be wearing a sweater, so probably in the 50s

Pour démarrer, il faut mettre l'avance à zéro et la mettre au moins au trois-quarts dès que le moteur tourne.

What was the switch you turned around ?

The top switch ( @ 0:55) is the ignition advance. You retard the ignition to start (helps with crank starting the engine) and once the car starts, you advance (turn clockwise) the ignition. Max advance is about 12 or 14 degrees advance which gives a lot more power. The bottom switch with the key is the ignition.

C'est l'avance à l'allumage : il faut la mettre à zéro pour démarrer, puis la mettre aux trois-quarts dès que le moteur tourne.
