I did my apprenticeship on Ford's over 55 yrs ago and I recall a senior mechanic who was w/o r king on an old Ford Blitz with a v8 side valve . He called me over and told me to listen to the sweetest running engine I will ever hear. I had to agree. 👍

Cool!!! I've never seen a marine flathead V8!!! I use to know an old beautifully restored Criscraft with 2 Chrysler flathead straight sixes,never seen a V8.

Ford 6 volt starters have a good unique sound, some call it "the coughing starter" Anyhow they where good starters and unique in old Ford Merc and Lincoln.

Used to put a petrol soaked rag in the throat of the carby to start a small block Chev when it had been sitting for a while ❤😊

Bottle feeding a one of these is dangerous the engine backfired, burnt all the hair off my arm and left my hand burning. Add a little gas then keep starting it until the fuel pump primes the system or just use an electric fuel pump. That would be the safest thing to do; a very dependable motor for sure.

It’s also pretty ineffective. A good way to flood it or hydro lock it. You need to atomize the fuel first. It’s how every primer works.

Was doing this with wine bottle of fuel years ago. Carb spat back, bottle caught fire - Molotov cocktail, threw it out of garage onto driveway where it exploded like some riot on TV. Managed to put out the fire in garage before it and my house burned down. Lesson learned.

I love a flathead ford. I had 5 of them . Now have 3. One is on a welding machine. One is going in a 1927 C cab T. The other is in a 1929 roadster. The one in the roadster. Came out of a 52 truck. Found in a barn. The boys could not get it running. Pulled it out. I gave them 200 dollars for it and the transmission put a battery on it and my distributor out of my tool box. And a oil pressure gauge . Squirted some gas in the carb. And started it up. They were shocked.

Exactly. You need to atomize the fuel. The carb isn’t going to do it until it has airflow.

More than likely it’s just in a poor state of tune, ie vacuum leaks, poor timing, varnish in the carb, etc. All of the flatheads I’ve worked on, I’ve been able to get them to start very easily, usually with less than a second or two of cranking.

I don’t think pouring gas down the carburetor is a good idea.I haven’t touched a flathead in over 60 years but I’ve had a pop through the carb.on two occasions.love those flatheads.

That first engine , starting it by dumping gas out of a jar even with a lid with small holes not a good idea. If that engine backfired it would be all over for that dude and a trip to the hospital with major burns.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the German Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So better dont use any fuel now!

That has to be the most idiotic way to start a flathead I've ever seen ... a GLASS jar with a small hole drilled in the lid dribbling gas into the carb . One backfire and he's going to be picking glass fragments out of his eyes ,face , walls plus things on fire . What's wrong pre filling the carburetor bowl and operating the accelerator pump ?
