I am a Japanese viewer. I would like to express my respect to Mr. JOE X for his severe testing of his knives. The hard, sharp blades of S35V and other powdered steels are very desirable. Japanese people have loved sharp blades for over 1500 years. However, there is a concern that the higher the hardness, the more the blade loses its tenacity. Does this result in a blade that is prone to breakage? Mr. JOE X himself and those who have been watching his videos know this well enough to know that. Where are the blades that continue to withstand Mr. JOE X's rigorous testing and cut like razors? I will keep watching JOE X's videos until I find the answer to that question. Have a good holiday season ! Finally, I would like to add a greeting in Japanese. 旧年中はあなたの動画をいつも楽しみに見ていました JOE X氏もどうぞ良いお年をお過ごし下さいませ――敬具

@@fughse CPM S35VN is considered a stainless steel and stainless steels have brittle edges because of higher chromium in the metallurgy. Hardness does not have a direct correlation to brittleness but it is relative in most instances. Carbon steels provide better edge retention.

Joe is awesome. I love these new tests you are doing in the beginning. You definitely demonstrated beyond any doubt to me the strength of the Tri-Ad Lock. Also you showed me that the cheaper AUS-10a steel was a superior Blade steel (and way cheaper) than the more expensive by about 5x the price for the S35VN which doesn't make such an awesome blade as we were led to believe.

S35VN is one of my favorite stainless steels for holding absolutely wicked edges. It is a bit "chippy" though when roughly used in my experience. Luckily, it is easily fixed as long as you aren't stabbing cars. The triad lock is simply bomber tough. Looks like this is a good cutter but not a basher.For real abuse I'll use my ESEE ;)

I have a 5 max and I also have a hardness tester..... The steel on the 5max is hardened to the extreme high end hardness (62 hrc) of s35vn. This makes for some VERY extreme edge retention but will make it a bit brittle as seen here. But lets be honest, If you stick to cutting/chopping realistic mayerials like wood, flesh and bone it should do better than most other knives. HSM should be shooting for a heat treat of 60.5 or so to avoid the danage seen here.

Thanks for sharing the info about the hardness of this blade. And good point about materials we cut. Also from my perspective of using knives: if I have a blade with high hardness and abrasion resistance, then chopping hard wood without any damage is a sufficient impact resistance level. And in this test, the S35VN by ColdSteel (62HRC in your test) was not dramatically damaged even at the stage of chopping and stabbing the steel sheet metal of the car body. Personally, I don't see any reason to lower HRC just to be able to chop steel nails, but ofc everyone may have different expectations.

I think the nail test needs a more stable cutting block because that test heavily relies on the blade being held straight, as soon as the nail sunk into the wood it was going to break out any blade no matter what steel you use. One of my favorite aspects of Cold Steel is grinding large blades with thin edge geometry that is optimized for cutting, which is the opposite of a knife designed for durability. And surviving the brick was an overall positive result. Once we get one of these in Magnacut it should just be an awesome knife.
@joex

@@joex As soon as the nail is sunk into the log it's pushing sideways on the blade, you may as well be hitting the side of the blade with a hammer, it'll blow out any knife no matter how strong.
@budthecyborg4575

@@joex The nail test would be a lot more consistent if you use the brick for a chopping block instead of wood, anything more sturdy that would allow the blade to fully cut the nail instead of just bending it.

@@joex I have and use "old school Cold Steel" Recon 1 XL clip point and tanto (5 inch / 13 cm blades) in CTS XHP steel purchased around 2015-2016. I've had a few minor chippings on the edge just from contact with staples in cardboard boxes, so I'm pretty sure they would have been destroyed by chopping nails and prying with the tip. Your tests are great at showing the limits of knife durability, but they are heavily biased towards valuing knives as impact tools and pry bars, in which neither CTS XHP nor S35VN steel shines at. At the same time you are almost neglecting the edge retention aspect for normal cutting tasks, which is pretty much the only reason why anyone would make a knife out of steel like S35V, CTS XHP, Elmax, M390 etc instead of "soft but tough" like Aus8. And that's why in your tests the "budget" 4-Max Scout (Aus10 blade) will be the winner over the "premium" 4-Max Elite or 5-Max (both have S35VN blades).

Serrated Spartan that JoeX made vid about some time ago also had a lot of chipping, im suspecting that GSM ordered the Taiwan plants to cook their steels into higher HRCs. For regular use, that would be beneficient for consumer because of increased edge retention and more pleasant sharpening, but it clearly sacrifices toughness- hence failures during JoeXs torture tests. I think they pivoted from toughness focus into edge retention focus.

@@joex correct. I am pointing out, that in older vids, neither aus10a(on voyagers or espadas) nor s35vn(on talwar, recons, hold out) chipped as much. Already back then at serrated spartan i noticed it chipped way more. I wish we could know what HRC old coldsteels had on their steels, compared to now- for the factory, making higher HRC knives mean higher production costs, because machines will get worn out faster, that's the reason so many companies(like some italians in the past) cooked their powdered steels silly soft, leading to outrage in the community.

Even when it did let loose a few times at the end it seemed to lock back up perfect each time which I find kind of odd and interesting. Any chance when swinging the spine you may have accidentally hit the unlock on the back of the handle? Yeah, without considering the heat treat, s35 was not ideal for that knife. 14c28n would be best. Magnacut is a lot tougher than s35, even. Not sure what they were going for- they could have made a cheaper and better knife with 14c28

Your skies are amazing. Brilliant blue. We dont' see our skies like that anymore in the USA. They spray our skies 24/7 with high altitude aerosols and when we look up we see mostly a greyish/blue fog even when its clear. It has resulted in our temps increasing about 10 degrees in the last 20 years. They must have plans for your country. They keep the countries they want to inhabit fairly clear.

Probably has to do with the filter he has on his lens. Where I’m at in America the skies look just fine. I’m not going to tell you where because I don’t want more people moving here. This could also be a factor: I’m not anywhere near large metropolitan areas.

Nice. What I expected. I won't waste money on overpriced knives (anymore for years now). This blade is made for long edge retention. Cutting a lot of rope without the need to sharpen it. Which is kind of weird, given the sturdy look/build of the blade, it suggests otherwise. It's not that tough at all.
@ukkonen762
@ukkonen762 Ай бұрын
You seem to overlook the fact that this 5-max has withstood chopping and batoning hardwoods without the slightest damage to either the blade/cutting edge, handle or lock. Most people won't go this far in using a folding knife - even overbuild one like 5-max. And then chopping and stabbing of the car, which is a rather unrealistic task even as an "emergency", with blade still almost intact. /edit: I'm really NOT defending the price of this knife - but from a technical and design perspective IMHO it's a bit unfairly criticized, seems the price inflates expectations./
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius Ай бұрын
@@ukkonen762 The knife hold up relatively well with the car yes, although there was edge damage. Cold Steel 4 Max Scout , Cold Steel SR1 Lite 62K1, I had those, same type of knife as the 5-max, much lower price. I sold them. Not my cup of tea. Too heavy and cumbersome for a folding knif. Though I do understand the people who really appreciate them. The price of the 5-max is just over the top. One would expect to hold up better in the tip test. It snapped like glas. I've had several Cold Steel folders, and quite a few are too hard and brittle. As did the Voyager Large clip point. Never stab it into a piec of wood, it will bend the tip. Try to bend it back, carefully, it snapped. It's better to have lower priced knives, with less brittle steel. Not as sexy to some, for quite a few, the only thing to appreciate is the newest supersteel. Which is just dumb. As we could have seen in all these tests Joe X has shown. Yes they may have longer edge retention, but that's all. I'm not spending 400 euro for that when I can have 40 Mora's or Hultafors that can do the same. Just my view. I do understand people who do like the more expensive blades. It's the same with cars and tv's and what not. 🤷‍♂ I used to buy Bark River's also and other more pricey knives. Not anymore. Maybe because I'm 57, having seen plenty, and learned from it. Still dumb, but not as I used to.😉 It was way worse.
@ukkonen762

@@Ve-suvius I think we both agree (as do most commenters) that the price is crazy, kind of "collectible" and unacceptable for someone with a utilitarian mindset. I only disagree with the claims that the knife or its blade itself is poorly made as such, not to mention the conspiracy theories of some people (not yours) that "once upon a time Cold Steel would have done it better, and now it's not even Cold Steel but a GSM fake". I have been in the knife hobby for over 20 years and have seen many premium steel knife tips being snapped during abuse, often on much lighter tasks than stabbing a car roof, what 5-max passed without a problem. And this also applies to "good old ColdSteel" - their Aus8 knives were "soft and tough", but their CTS XHP blades at over 60HRC were allso kinda "glass". Did that make these knives "sh.t"? Depends on our expectations and approach, what do you value more in a blade. Back to the 5-max - if we would criticize pure rationally, and here too I think we agree, this knife is primarily impractical due to its weight. Carrying 380 g in your pocket..when you can have a more durable fixed blade of the same size weighing 100 g less with sheath (!), or also a 5inch blade Cold Steel Recon 1XL weighing 220 g. So it's weight overkill, price overkill...but it's not a bad knife. I think it's the same as carrying a full size all-steel custom made 1911 - impractical, overpriced, makes much less sense than a Glock 19 and so on. In general I think the knife hobby is somewhere between collecting watches and collecting guns - yes, somewhat dumb oldboys way of wasting money )
@Ve-suvius

@@ukkonen762 I've seen the talk on how bad Cold Steel now is since GSM took over. Nonsense. Customer service was always sh!t with Cold Steel. I know from experience. You may be happy when they even react back in time. I do find their video's with the girl to attract male viewers a bit cheap tactic. Put a sexy looking girl in a video and the viewers will come. There's a woman who does knife video's on youtube, I think she has 1,5 million followers.Ridiculous. Her video's are nothing special at all. There are many males out there who do exactly the same , even with some humor, bit nothing close. Tits sell don't they. The Beckers also passed the test of stabbing and chopping the car. Same for the Junglas. But the tips break easily when put into the wood and then bend it. Not so much with the Mora Companion HD. And plenty other low priced knives hold up better also then the 400-500 euro 5-max. But for normal use the 5-max is fine. No doubt about it. It's an impractical knife for a folder, true. But some don't mind, so I read. So if that's what they like, go for it. I agree with your thoughts at the end. It's kind of an art form, you just don't pay only for functionality with the more expensive ones. You pay also for taste, looks, something extraordinary. Novelty. Collector interest goes paths a person who just uses it for function don't go. The Cold Steel Recon 1 is a good knife. Also in the test of Joe X it did rather well , even though it has the clip point. The 5-max looks good stabbing the car, but it's no analogue for stabbing in self defense, that tip is way too obtuse for stabbing through layers of tougher cloths. The needle like dagger were build like that for that reason, efficient penetration. A car hood is not analogue to that. I know of a Gurkha who couldn't stab through the Taliban's cloths. It was inefficient. He hacked at the big Taliban's hands who retreated. Just some side thoughts...
@ukkonen762
@ukkonen762 Ай бұрын
@@Ve-suvius I agree, the Recon 1 is a great design, I had and still own a few variants, both regular and (discontinued) XL size. But I also appreciate Demko's "fatty" designs of AD10, 4-Max and 5-Max. As for stabbing capabilities - thanks for sharing your thoughts and war story. Clothes/fabric layers can be tricky to pierce and cut, there was even such an fabric "armor" in the Middle Ages called gambeson. Interestingly enough, it appears that the original custom 5-Max had even slighty less pointy blade. Lynn Thompson mentions it on GSM 5-Max video, you can also see it on Jimislash video "Lord Demko 5-Max". And on a less serious note, there is also a rule "It needs to be pointy. Round is not scary. Pointy is scary." ;) Have a happy and prosperous new year!
