Cold Steel Butterfly Swords tested the sharpness, durability and power of the 1055 carbon steel blade's edge. Cold Steel was not joking, this is a pair of real battle-ready butterfly swords.The edge is sharpened to a convex edge with the front 1/3 sharpest and the rest is less-sharp but still very sharp for most usage. They weighted 1.9LB each on my scale and feels sturdy, heavy and strong in hand, extremely ideal for real martial artist.
More review details: www.taoistmasterblog.com/cold-...
*Do not attempt the test at home as it may damage your blade. Be careful when handling a Cold Steel blade because they are all sharpened to a nice edge that can cut and chop with ease. These blades are scary weapons and must be treated and handled with cautions. Buy here goo.gl/aYGLgw

To all of you who are watching, as of October 21 2012 - I had fine tune and sharpen my edge of the CS blade more because I find the factory edge is abit not too good to my standard.. so now the edge can cut MUCH better! Stay tune for my future vid on testing them!

Thanks! Yes the edge is sharper 1/3 upper and the 2/3 is less sharp but can still be used for thrusting and killing. I tested it and it can saw apart the cardboard but can't slice paper easily like a pocket knife, which does make sense to me. CS Jians are quite good, might be on my list to own too. Now I have alot of jian(swords) but they aren't even to that quality standard yet. The best one so far I handle is the Cold Moon Sword, youtube it up and you see me doing a form and demo with it.

Thanks for your long explanation.Cold Moon Sword is beautiful and big.Cold Steel has also its newest 2012 Battle Gim.It looks very good but it's also Damascus steel and price is high.Now, I think CS swords are great for collectors and advanced martial artists but for practice I would like to have a cheaper,blunt jian.As you showed a real weapon is not a joke!

The cold moon sword I got is made of high carbon steel which can be sharpened for use as well but it came unsharpened so it is safer for shipping. I just kept it that way for practice but the sword weight 3.8lb which is very nice and heavy. I would love the CS Jade Lion though, that one is really good compare to the Gim Sword design. The handguard is nicer and more ergonomic. Price also is 2x though, haha! Damascus steel isn't cheap!

search up my videos on butterfly swords and you see what I do with them. Yes they are used in pairs which give you advantage of block and attack at the same time or you can double attack too, it just takes skills to manipulate them

Good test and review.From what you wrote it appears that CS is correct even in slightly different sharpness of the edge: 1/3 for attack, rest more for parrying.It's rely High End.You are very familiar with chinese weapons so I have a question.What do you think about CS jians in term of design and a look.We know that they are all battle-ready.Thank you.

hahaI see! Yeah the CS blades are good overall but the battle gim kinda gone the wrong way abit. They might be thinking of making it too fancy, haha! There are many affordable swords out there if you search for the antique reproduction swords. They are about $100-$200 range, mostly made with high carbon steel and the good ones can be sharpen for cutting too!

When fighting with these swords, did soldiers actually wield one in each hand? Would wielding both at the same time be more effective than just one at a time? If so, how?

I agree, but I don't do Wingchun with these. So I enjoyed them very much. A lot of techniques in WC, especially the GwongZhau sect that I practice, uses a short blade that is about 11-12 only because they have to twirl and twist in the "indoor" way and a long blade can't get there for sure. Too dangerous. But nope, the read deal should not be blunt, they should be semi sharp and the 1/3 is sharpen for strike if needed.

Sharpness is not shown with card board or can cutting. Try cutting a thin silk cloth with as little as pressure possible. I am impressed by the buttery fly swords and wish I had a pair. I have some decent stuff but not like yours I fix up used stuff like the cold steel war hammer. I double wire wrapped and epoxied the upper 1/3 of the handle after I sanded it and burned it to make some color then redid the finish with Tung oil. I also wrapped the bottom half with leather cord in a simple pattern for better grip. I do have some blades the same size as thsoe that are extremely sharp.

Besides, I had to defend myself many times in the urban streets and find the blunt handle end more practical then the edge itself cause intent to use the edge is a little too gung ho but its a great demo...

The biggest problem I have with these blades is that the blade's tang looks so thin as they enter the handle guards, it makes me worry, especially at 5:49, you can see where the tang of the blades enter the handle. I worry that it will snap after a heavier strike

I got a pair a few months ago and they're great. However, the sheath they come in has stained both blades from the black ink used on the leather and now the area has rusted. No matter how regularly I clean the blades they will rust if I keep them in the provided sheath so now I just keep them outside the sheath. Did you have this problem chiinnature?

Wing Chun instructor here. We mainly use them in the Baat Jaam Dao form. They are very dangerous when handled correctly. I see a huge problem with these. My blacksmith made mine much nicer. These are simply too long. The weapon is a knife, not a sword. The blade should not be over 12 inches.

I thought they only had one Id have to check it out again. Granted its only a prejudiced I have from observing but it seems well how to put this in a more applicable sense ... hmmm well nvm just seems like one I wouldnt like to rely on. I guess a sharp sword is a sharp sword but still its cutting potential is the major draw back for me ( ahh there I go sounds better then flimsly LMAO ) not to say it cant cut just the brutish manor in it isnt my style.

@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 10 жыл бұрын
You are not only paying for raw materials my friend, you are also getting the warranty and quality control by Cold Steel, and so if your sword do fail on you, you get your money or a replacement sword, that's CS's guarantee that other manufacture not dare to challenge most of the time. For me, I am happy about them and proved that they are stronger than what you imagine. 1055 can be very good too, if the quality of the 1055 is good. Just like "damascus steel", it can be a good quality or a crap quality pattern steel too.
@papaburger
@papaburger 10 жыл бұрын
Many "stainless" steel knifes rusts . For 1055 , just oil them or wax to keep them from rusting . What do you mean by "strong" ? Soft steel such as 1055 are good for taking a beating and abusive usages. Many machetes are made of 1055. Harder steels ( such as 1095) keep an edge longer but can crack and chips as a long blade weapon. For smaller knives 1095 are better ( but will also rust ).
@kakarotcabage3573
@kakarotcabage3573 10 жыл бұрын
papaburger 1055 is considered to be weaker then 1065,1075 ,1085 or 1095 but still it all depends on the heat treatment
@papaburger
@papaburger 10 жыл бұрын
1055 can withstand shocks a lot better than harder steel such as 1095 . The butterfly swords are weapons ; they are not utility knifes .

i wrote this comment a while ago,and my mind has completely changed. i own a number of cold steel machetes and tomahawks and 1055 is an amazing steel,one of the toughest out there and i love it. i still think its a bit overprised though and their not even fulltang

As a training weapon the CS knife is is a bad one to use. Indeed, within some families of wing chun the blade was never sharp (down to Buddhist belief). I do not recommend this weapon the WCers wishing to learn the knives.
