Actually, not. Softer steels may be favored in the sense that their edges will roll, but will not chip so easily. But, no steel goes without being broken. Under realistic and sensible conditions, a vast majority of knives would perform well. Joex's tests can also shed light on whether the knives are properly heat treated, have the proper grind for the steel, hardened to the optimal Rockwell for the steel, and have strong handles, screws, and pins. What would be a test that favors stainless steels? Corrosion resistance?

@@joex I saw on a Shot-Show video that Spartan Blades will bring out a Ka-Bar in Magnacut this year and the dude seemed pretty confident about its superior durability. Might be worth a shot to get into contact with them and see if they send you a free one for testing, considering you have pretty reputable channel by now. Depending on if they do, it would be at least be a good indicator on how confident they really are about their products. 😏 Would be a good test also, since you have already tested the standard Ka-Bar, but only if you get a free one, i expect no sane person to pay their prices. 😆 Anyways, i really appreciate your work and hope you can continue it for a long time. @@anthonytuccillo6274 It really looks like the ideal heat treat and steel selection in these tests would be the same as you would chose for a good sword, and I have yet to hear about any sword maker using 3V. You just want the most basic low/medium carbon steel with a heat treat to 50-55RC, that gets you excellent impact resistance and just enough hardness to take a razor edge.

Holding both in hand you really can tell how much beefier and heavy the warcraft is. However I agree that softer steels definitely roll ove or fold over before they chip/break . High-end steel blades hold an edge longer and more ridged at the cost of chipping easier and shattering if pushed past their limit. They do not rust as easily, and they cost more. Soft handles are fine until they fail, but add no strength to the knife. You do a great job of proving the difference. 👍

The handle being wobbly, is typical for the rubber onto the tang style that Cold Steel has. It's better to have the rubber on the polypropylene which is onto the tang. Like Mora does. 3V tip broke during the car stabs, that was not as tough , as is said by many of 3V. Not going to spend my bucks on that. The edge did fine on the stone, then again, the pole broke the blade easily. It's a bit weird . Edge doesn't chip out, but tip breaks easy. Maybe a bit Becker like.

@mikeboyce21 Жыл бұрын
Yes they are 59-61 hrc and they absolutely would be tougher at 57 to 58 hrc, but that would mean they wouldn't hold as good of an edge as well. Also it would probably effect edge stability. That being said i own a fehrman extreme judgment in 3v its hrc is 57 to 59 and it is noticeably tougher than my srk in 3v. However it is a quarter inch thick and the srk is about 3/16ths.

@davidthomson2794
@davidthomson2794 Жыл бұрын
Iirc from Crucible industries data sheets (makers of 3v) it attains maximum toughness at 58 hrc. Once it gets to 60 hrc you've lost 30% of its toughness and then past 60 it goes down quite quick but obviously better edge retention. So heat treat is critical dehending on what you want out of a knife. I still think at around 60hrc the balance of good edge retention and good toughness along with being as easy to sharpen as a simple carbon steel on diamonds is a nice balanced steel. If you want to pound it with a large rock or mild steel pole then really you shouldn't be using a knife.

It was very interesting test for me, because i have Recon Tanto in 3V and those are comparable knives. And i am not impressed. Thought 3V is super tough steel, but now i see, its mediocre. My new wish is AK-12 bayonet, called 6X9. I think it is superknife.

@@joex But the whole “what knife is best” question is tricky. For example , I’ve got a real cheap paring knife and an expensive one from Seki city , which one do I use all the time ? Yes , the cheap one , because it’s got a good enough handle , I can sharpen it up in no time and I can throw it in the dishwasher ! So which one is really BEST ? 🤔Also considering that I could have bought 20 of them for the price of the Japanese one …

Hey JoeX, another good show my brother! Thank you sir. Hey, just for sh*ts and giggles, I'd love to see you do an "until it breaks" test on some of the less expensive but overbuilt folding knives out there. I'd like to see how a heavy, overbuilt frame lock fairs that relies more on its size and thickness of material rather than overall build quality. The Schrade SCH-303/304, SCH-301T and SCH-306T would be great victims, I mean test subjects. They're all extremely heavily built 5/32"/3.8 mm to 3/16"/4.5 mm thick stainless steel frame locks with equally thick 3.5" blades in 8CR13MOV and around 8 to nearly 11 ounces! They are BEASTS! The And in my experience seem to hold up to a fair amount of serious abuse. But a knife hasn't been tested until the man, the myth, the legend himself, JoeX tests it! I'd love to see it! Whadaya say, think you could give them a go?

Let's put some basic knowledge here cause by the comments i read i believe most people don't know it.. First " the sharper and pointer a knife is the easiest it's gonna be to loose it's tip. You can't have pointy, thin and indestructible. Second " iron and steel are very close in terms of chemistry and toughness, now on the iron pol because it's rounded the thouch point of the impact is tiny wich means that the force that Joe puts is kinda destructive cause it's concentrated on this tiny spot. Third: glass is harder than steel, theres no way a tip won't loose a small piece when he's stabbing glass! Even if we cannot see it with our eyes on the camera.. I believe the srk did a great job because no matter how the advertising or name it in the end it is a military knife... that's why it was issued on the navy seals, and it had to be pointy and light etc.. Joe i believe it's time to test busse and miller bros blades now! Let's debunk these legends now.

even 5160 is tougher than 3v. 3v is tough for what it is , semi stainless and high carbide. 3v uses power metallurgy to keep carbides small and makes for a tough blade than say..a D2 (conventionally melt and made)

3V with a good heat treating is good: it cuts very well, keeps its sharpness for a long time and is pretty easy to resharpen, plus it is semi stainless. It has a very good stain resistance for a carbon steel. However 3V toughness is not amazing when heat treated too hard. It has to stay low on the HRC scale to keep its toughness. At 58 it's very good, it cuts and it resists stress. At 60+ it cuts a bit more and breaks far easier. When the 3V craziness started more than a decade ago, the few expensive knives made in 3V were excellent high end tools. Brands like Zero Tolerance or Survive produced 3V knives with an optimized HT. Nowadays these hyped companies sell it as a magical steel, even if a good knife in C75, 440 or AUS 6-8 is better than their made in taiwan 3V@60+ :D 3V is the new 440. Its reputation is becoming sh-t thanks to its misused by greedy clowns. Again, great review.

Impressive the amount of abuse! I believe Joe X lists the SRK among his top favorite knives, but in SK5, which he said broke easier than the 3V version. @@joex What is your acceptable price range? Toughness and strength can be pushed up with heat treatment with cheap steels. Only edge retention is related to higher priced steels. There are ways to cut production costs. 8" to 10" choppers can be made for selling for 150€. Under that it's going to get small and thin.
