Cold Steel SRK: shrsl.com/v08x
When my Cold Steel Leatherneck SF knife in SK-5 steel broke under hard use - batoning through a small log, my Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V steel came to the rescue, processing all of the firewood for that night and the next morning.
This is the rest of the footage from the same night that my Leatherneck failed. You'll see that my SRK not only survived the same hard use (and about 20 times as much of it), but actually did it with hardly any damage to the edge. This is a knife that will remain in my collection pretty much forever.

Did some research and found that the Leatherneck has a hollow grind blade whereas the Carbon V Recon Tanto had a saber-grind. Thus, the type of steel most likely had nothing to do with it. _NEVER_ baton wood with a hollow grind blade. They're just not designed for it no matter what the steel. The reason for the hollow grind is because people were complaining that the saber grinds on the old knives didn't have the slicing power. Saber grinds can't slice very well unless done with very thin knives like those found on Moras. The only reason the Leatherneck gave up was because it wasn't designed for what you were doing. Also, your video camera should have an auto exposure system that will compensate for falling light. It also can overcompensate if you want to shoot fires (set for +1.25 compensation). By overexposing, the fire will be overexposed and the people around it should be easily seen. Same for snow. You want to overcompensate, not undercompensate.

It's knife testing. These are combat/utility knives. These are something you might even need to save your life if you are out there by yourself. Which would you like, the one that a piece of wood snapped the blade, or one that could take a repeated beating?

I really miss the US Carbon V blades that CS made. This was the best steel they ever used. 4116 Krupp, AUS 8 and even San Mai 3 are all more expensive than Carbon V and don 't hold up as well.

High carbon steels are kind of a pain from the standpoint of keeping them from rusting, but they sure do put up with much more abuse ... that's been my experience anyway. I use one of the cheap Cold Steel machetes for batoning ... never a problem. Nice vid!

Ka-bars are made of 1095 carbon steel, which is going to out perform almost any stainless steel on the market in a large fighting/utility blade so long as it is heat treated properly for hard use. Ka-bars are hardened to 56-58 which should mean excellent hard use performance for 1095. AUS-8 is more suited to smaller blades, where its fine grain structure and ability to take a rediculously sharp edge can really shine.

San Mai III version has a hollow grind and the VG1 steel can be brittle in the cold and chips abit at least mine has. The AUS8 version is almost identical to the carbon V and is excellent beaten the snot out of mine for acouple of years now no problems. Also take a look at the recon scout in SK5 if you want something bigger, great knife good chopper with a Full Flat grind if a tad heavy.

I am lucky enough to have a brand new SRK and LTC Kukhri in carbon V, and yes it's a V for vandnium not the Roman numeral 10. My mom bought me the SRK for my birthday right before they stopped using, carbon V and bought the LTC in 2001 new for $88. They go used on ebay for $250. Mine are like new. Hooked to my get home bag, and only taken out to oil or, touch up the edge which they really never needs. I also have the recon in SK5, and the GI Tanto, and a few bushmasters. I would take the GI over the Recon, but not my two Carbon V babies.

Small correction. It's Carbon-Five, not Carbon-Vee. Carbon V has reached an almost mythical status among Cold Steel users. It's not smolted by elves the way Thor's hammer was, but close. Those who have them don't want to part with them, and the mystical status imparted to them is not altogether unjustified. The new SK5 Recon Tantos are pretty good, though. I doubt one of the new ones would fail. Was the Leatherneck actually made with SK5 steel?

or you could buy a cheap steel wedge that sharpens easily and hit it with a mallet -_- i do have hatchets and axes for bigger stuff but for making small kindeling the wedge can be better sometimes. thats what i do and its cheap, saves your knives, and is FASTER most importantly. only a slightly higher risk of injury due to holding the wedge for the first strike. then again, if your knife breaks under stress in the wood, you could have sharp steel flying at your kids.....

The SRK with the black blade is made of AUS 8a stainless and the unpainted one is made of VG-1 San Mai III which would be even better for this beating. You really should just have an axe or saw. Cold steel is up front about which steels are gonna hold up better. The leatherneck you broke is made out of German 4116 Stainless and it makes a nice knife that is not for this level of abuse and testing it this way was just asking for damage.

Another video stating that the SK-5 Leatherneck is crap? You should mention that you had a lemon with bad heat treat and it failed because of that. Ah yes - and because you hit a huge knot and tried to hammer through it with brute. I have this knife, too. It is more of a fighter but IT IS CAPABLE of doing bushcraft work. I batoned several hours with it - worked. Just don't expect it to be as strong as an 8mm thick blade. ...Yes and axes are heavier to carry so I use a knife.

You beat it through a log, exposed a weakness in a product on something you MIGHT have to do and some people WEEP! 😭 I don't even baton, but maybe everything's wet and I'll forget to bring my whole TOOL SHED so I'll need to get by with just a knife. Maybe I'll never need to but now I know what kind of stress it can take because it was exposed through this type of abuse. Do they not get this? No.. and they probably won't, ever. Wow, these knives really suck! I have a Cold steel Bushman, and it is so much better! With my Cold steel Bushman, I have split over 70 logs in total, (It's a new knife.) with 50 of them being from the factory edge, and no damage what so ever! With one of the logs, I decided to be lazy and split it while it was still 4 feet long. On top of its superior cutting, it also has a storage compartment in the handle, and can be used as a spear or to give you a longer handle for chopping. Also, only $20!

TLBS, I don't mean to sound disrespectful at all man, but in no way, shape or form would you ever have to baton a piece of wood that size in a true survival situation. Secondly in no way would you ever be able to cut down a piece of wood that size in a survival situation with just your knife to begin with. Battening a log that size is simply flagrant miss use of the knife and should in no way reflect the quality of the knife. The fact of the matter is that I would expect even the best of knives to break under those circumstances and would in no way ever subject my knife to that kind of abuse if I were lost in the woods. So ultimately I find this video rather pointless. Remember, a knife is not an axe! You don't use a hammer to cut down trees, or a saw to point in nails right? You get my point?
