Interesting take on the knife. More modern versions do not have that "choil" you were referring to and the cutting edge starts very close to the finger guard, thus making a choil unnecessary. Mind you, the Trail Master isn't really intended for very fine woodworking, but can do it with some practice. [I have a San Mai III version!] The TM is a great splitter, even though I do not advocate batoning, except in extreme conditions. Wedges do the job with less potential for damage to the blade. When chopping a tree (as in the video) a useful technique I learned long ago is to avoid chopping at 90 degrees. Rather make the chops at 45 degree angles (up and down) as the blade will always bite in much deeper and remove more wood on the second, opposite chop. Of course, in reality, a Silky saw would do the job in half the time with a quarter of the effort! This is why I would ALWAYS include a Silky (or Laplander) saw in my preparations for a woodland expedition! Thanks for the video!

It might not be a rambo knife, but i could see rambo using it, so it still counts.

I was gifted the Rambo 1 & 2 knives way back in the 80’s...this led to me purchasing a Trail Master as a user in the late 80’s. I purchased a new Trail Master in 01 Tool steel about 6 years ago and retired my original. Much prefer the newer 01 steel. It sharpens up beautifully, holds an edge longer and is a bit more rust resistant...(less maintenance)

Hi Mate, its a High Carbon Tool Steel (O1 Tool steel or SK5). Both very very good Steels to make knives. The Trailmaster is a good knife, for ppl who love big ol blades :)
