Always wanted someone to do this comparison. Triad and size won for me.

Love my Black Talon 2. My go to self defense small carry. The Mayhem will be my regular as soon as I get it. The Frenzy is good with reach, lightweight and well made with the 5.5 sword line wharny blade.

The Black Talon 2 has a stronger blade design, locking mechanism, and blade/handle materials. This seemed slightly biased... It would've been good to have a cutting comparison and a wet handle comparison, to make it less subjective.

I got a good deal on a BT 2 and with all the hype I was pretty excited to get it… It’s a piece of junk! No comparison to Spyderco fit and finish, feel, action. The lock sticks every other time I open it, ugh. It’s sharp, yes, and I’m sure it’s strong. But it feels like trash, if I had paid full price I’d be pissed.

@@DZNTZ if the lock sticks, either you got a lemon, or you have weak hands. If you're sure it's not your hands, then you should exchange it for a model that isn't a lemon. As for 'feeling cheap', weight doesn't equal quality. The handle of the BT2 is g10, whereas Spyderco just used injection molded FRN. It's pretty common for people to confuse weight with quality.

Spyderco Matriarch 2 with Emerson Opener, add a Lynch deep carry pocket clip. You can't even tell it's in your pocket cause the thing is so lightweight. The pocket clip from Lynch makes it easier to flip the blade open too, cause it gives a ledge up high for your pinky to rest. The knife is incredibly dangerous. It's like a giant utility knife blade. Spyderco is the Ferrari, Cold Steel is the Dodge Ram.

The Cold Steel pocket clip can be changed out to a deep carry pocket clip by MXG. Also the g10 can be slightly sanded so not to be so rough either in hand or under the pocket clip. I did both to mine .😊

@jdemeter4357

I didn't pay attention to which one, but here is how I did it. All my spydercos have a MXG clip ,I took off the cold steel clip and held it above the spyderco knives till I found one that fits. On one of my knives I had to drill a very small enough hole to fit perfectly but which one (?). Shipping is cheaper when ordering more plus having a couple handy helps. PS today is the first time I saw your question

@@jdemeter4357 No, I can take off the cold steel clip no problem. I'm gonna take it off and cut the top off it and put it back on so it fills up the recess milled out in the G10 and place the new MXG clip on top of it. By doing this the new MXG clip will be flush with the handle.

The Spyderco Civilian would definitely have been a better comparison vs the Black Talon, it's bigger, has g10 handles, and is built much more similarly. For a knife that is basically going to be carried solely for self-defense use, and theoretically (hopefully) never drawn and used, the slimness and lighter weight of the Spyderco wins out for me. No maker can match Spydeco for ease of carry and ergonomics, they are masters of that arena.

If you know anything about Spyderco matriarch 2 You would know you can deploy it without flicking it. I have 2, 1 with the emerson opener and the normal one. And both deploy with a flick of the wrist.

Spyderco's serrations are far better than the cheap kitchen knife serrations Cold Steel uses. The better comparison would be between the Black Talon and Civilian. Also, some of the Matriarch models have an Emerson wave, which is superior to that crap thumb disk "wave" on the Black Talon. I think the Black Talon is great in plain edge only. Otherwise, it's Spyderco with it's fantastic serrations.

Spyderco offers a Matriarch 2 with an Emerson wave and a black blade. I think it is the best option. The Cold Steel is pretty cool, though.

I would only get a Black Talon with the plain edge. Cold Steel's serrations are like cheap kitchen knife serrations. Spyderco's serrations are real serrations for a knife intended for this purpose. Spyderco for the win!

I've owned a Civilian, and I currently own a Black Talon II. Never had any safety issues with the Civilian. Call me careless or stupid, but that damned Black Talon cut me within five minutes of owning it due to the Emerson style opener not deploying all the way and snapping shut on my finger. Granted, I'm not used to deploying that way, but with only one other clip position, I can't safely carry it like I can the Civilian, or Matriarch 2. Right now, the Talon sits in a drawer and is used primarily as an interesting showpiece. I don't trust it or myself using it.

Dude that's not the knife that I carry everyday. I'd rather carry a overbuilt knives made by Cold Steel and thats my Voyager XL Tanto serrated and Voyager XL Kris 5.5 inch blade is what I carry everyday, while my old cold steel Master Tanto and Magnum Tanto 12 and my old Benchmade Kris Balisong are all Retired they served me well when I was in The USMC. Especially the Master Tanto and Magnum Tanto they been with me for 20 years everywhere in The Planet. For the folding knives, nothing can beat the cold steel with triad lock and griv exhandle. Especially Voyager XL series.

You're out of your mind. A blind person can see how the Cold steel design is much better, stronger and uses much better materials. S35VN and G10 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> VG10 and FRN. VG10 is better than bronze - that's it. Come on, man. Then there is the size , construction and looks advantages . The frail lock and blade weakening hole of the Spyderco, come on!!! What's wrong with you? I don't even like any of the two designs, because it's an impractical knife for most uses, but you are out of your mind, if you think that the Spyderco crap interpretation comes out at top with all the weak attributes. Again, what's wrong with you?

To be fair, Cold steel borrowed the design from Spyderco Civilian, so it's a Cold steel interpretation of the Spyderco design, I love cold steel knives, the majority of my knives are cold steel, but for this design I opted for the matriarch with the Emerson wave, it just feels nicer in hand, lighter, and more EDC friendly...Held both knives and prefered the feel of the Spyderco myself and kept it, I was so sure that I am going to keep the cold steel (since cold steel is my favorite brand), but I was surprised with how nice the Spyderco feels...Seemless

I reckon you shouldn't get too bogged down on looks, both of these knives are held in a hammer grip and the grip on the talon is ergonomically sounder, so that tips the scale in favour of the CS, in my humble opinion.
