It looks like the Trail Boss sunk deeper but your Warhawk was much easier to pry loose. Gotta love that leverage.

Little history lesson that came to mind: A few centuries ago, we, Hungarians had a weapon called the "fokos", which was basically a tomahawk with a longer handle. Our ancestors brought it to Europe from Asia around the time of great migrations (2-500AD). I tought it might be interesting...

I had my rifleman's hawk set up like this for a while. It turns what is normally a one handed weapon into a beast of a battleaxe. It gives you a lot more leverage for chopping too. I ended up going back to the shorter handle because it was just "handier." It would be neat to mount a spike hawk head on the 30" handle. Talk about punching holes in stuff!
@RealitySurvival10 жыл бұрын
Sweet mod! I agree you would have to be careful on the misfires to keep the handle from breaking. Prolly a back saver too!
@jeredsyn19648 жыл бұрын
Oh Chris what do you think you're doing there? When you used your little invention you swung at an angle and made progress but when you used the Trail Boss you went straight down just putting marks on the wood. At first you accidentally hit it on an angle and the real ax knocked out a chunk the size of a ham and cheese sandwich and you made the adjustment. I'm very very disappointed in you Chris, this behavior makes me very sad. :( I just want to be alone now. Mike
@vikingbrowski37188 жыл бұрын
+Michael Quigley i noticed that to. he really should try to use the same technique with both, because i also noticed him swing more downward, and straight, and far apart with the trail boss, and more at an angle like a V,and closer with the war tomahawk thing. i personally noticed no difference between the two other then his change in technique i'm not saying it was on purpose, and he may have accidently changed his technique. the trail boss may seem more heavy idk, but I know I'm convinced the war tomahawk thing is no better than the trail boss.
@saliston8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Quigley I just watched this and you can tell the bias. The ax has much better ergonomics and the head is made for chopping.
@FringeWizard27 жыл бұрын
The trail boss is better for cutting wood because it has better swing and energy diffusion (which means less soreness and damage to your bones after hours of using it). The other axe is more meant to be a weapon (?) than for wood, it certainly can cut wood, but not the same. He also prejudged the axes beforehand and that causes people to subconsciously set out to prove whatever they have in mind as we can see happened here in this vid. A mere few minutes of cutting with an axe does not reveal everything you need to know, it's not just about how fast you get through that wood, but how your body feels after hours of use.

@wdtradingpost596610 жыл бұрын
In my pack situation, I would order 2 Warhammer hafts. 1 to strap to the pack for camp chopping, and the other to cut to about 23 -24 inches, instead of the 19 inch standard handle. Those extra few inches make a big balance difference. Then swap the head when is heavy chopping time. It's the beauty of a tomahawk.

@VTPSTTU8 жыл бұрын
I thought that the Trail Boss was doing pretty well but that you hit with more effective angles when you were using your "Warhawk." As a "prepper tool," I worry about anything that will break more easily if I miss some strikes. I'm also curious how long that thinner handle would last if someone were doing hard chopping every day. The stresses are going to be much higher in that kind of handle in comparison to the stresses on a more traditional ax handle. If I were running Cold Steel and wanted to manufacture something of this nature, I'd use a handle shape that looked more like a traditional ax handle at the head end. I'd reshape the head to take that kind of handle while still being fairly light in weight.

I recently did the handle-swap thing on the new Weeping Heart and Diamond Spontoon tomahawks. Which mean I now have Axe+Hammer, Axe+Spike, Spontoon+Hammer and regular War Hammer options in both 30"' and 22". The old Spike Hawk was a bit too anemic for the 30" treatment so the Weeping Hawk's larger edge is an upgrade. But I still agree that the Rifleman's Hawk benefits the most from this upgrade, it is just too unwieldly in its 22" configuration. I gave away my extras 22" War Hammers (aka the brain extraction tool) to friends. I miss the smooth face War Hammer though.

First: SORRY, I must have missed that Disclaimer. Second: I thought that everyone had heard of Vector 001. As I understand it, his unique innovation was that with the very narrow Tomahawken blade, and the much longer handle, one can get dramatic results on men or timber with a very light "Peck" rather than a true "Chop" as would be needed with Axe, Hatchet, Bowie or Standard Tomahawken. I once asked him about accuracy and he replied that it was irrelevant because there was a flat steel bar on the leading edge of the shaft of all his custom handles-covered up-and very square edged-and quite sufficient to break arm or leg even if the head of the weapon missed. With the synthetic shaft, some of the Tomahawken have a small match-safe/storage tube in the shaft-or you can get one where the interior tube isa30" (approximately) blowgun. With all the advantages-I still loathe synthetics.But for someone who can stomach fiberglass, they're the only way to go. .....RVM45 .

Chris, axes and hawks are not made to make you tiered after some strikes and they are not made for brutal use which can hurt you if it split's. hammer's and axes are meant to strike with their wight. imagine you break the handle or even hurt yourself alone in the wild. watch aboriginal people working wood, they rather strike 5 times more then damage tool or health. i love your videos, learn a lot and hope you keep on doing them. thanks for the great work, all the best wishes from germany. ;)

Nice! I had never thought about doing that, but it looks like a darn nice combination! BTW, the 'proper' way to use an axe the size of the Trail Boss, or any axe short enough that you can swing it between your legs and not hit the ground, is on your knees. It's also the safest way to use an axe that length, by far. So your thought that maybe you should use it on your knees was spot on!

No need to give me credit. I'm sure someone else has done it. I did find a video where someone put one of the lighter heads on a warhammer handle but they didn't show chopping. The Riflemans Hawk just feels too head heavy on the smaller Hawk handle, especially when compared side by side with the lighter hawks.

PREPAREDMIND101 I'd honestly dig a short handled viking axe or war hammer.
@palerider717110 жыл бұрын
Wanimator If you want a short handled Warhammer just buy the hawk handle. I have done it before. Your not so lucky with the Viking axe, its on an larger diameter haft. You would have to cut down the Viking Axe haft .... and unless you 6'6' and you arm is as big a most men's thighs I think you would find that setup hard to manage.
@mbober10 жыл бұрын
I doubt it. This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. It would take a year to chop anything and tomahawks are weapons more than tools. This makes as poor a weapon as it does an "axe". This isn't innovation, it's stupidity.
@palerider717110 жыл бұрын
mbober are you talking from experience, just repeating what others have told you? Before you reply let me state a couple of points. 1) I have owned a Rifleman's hawk for several years and use the same set up as Chris. No, its not like using my 4lb Dayton Pattern or my 3.5lb Jersey axe but I have felled smaller trees, used it to split and batoned firewood, and cut a 6" to 8" tree in half with the Rfileman on a 30" haft. Is it my 1st choice for heavy felling or spitting again no, but it beats lugging a 4lb axe through the woods on a hike! So, no your not talking from experience with the product as described. Your just stating an opinion not based on facts. 2) The term tomahawk was adopted for the Powhatan language and was used interchangeability for any small axe either wedge fit or eye haft from the early 1700's till around the 1840. They both descended from British boarding axes which where used primarily as a tool to cut rigging and timber then also as a weapon. As the wedge head with a poll came more popular the term Tomahawk was associated with eye haft heads with no poll and was use primarily as a weapon. In fact the Rifleman would not be considered a hawk but a poll axe. So your statement that "This makes as poor a weapon as it does an "axe". This isn't innovation, it's stupidity" is proven invalid by history. My advise is either know what you talking about, preferably by experience and research, or heed this biblical advise : "Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent." Proverbs 17:28 NLT PREPAREDMIND101
@geelizcano10 жыл бұрын
I think your warhawk is giving you a better feel because of leverage, and the head is less weight. You're upping your leverage and reducing your weight at a downward swing. I know a small amount of survival, bush craft, and lumber hacking stuff (I'm a city boy who likes all this crap but I've never been trained or been in a situation where I had to use it though). I bet if you did a vertical chop, you'd need the weight for better momentum and deeper cuts. Your warhawk may be a good chopper and combat style/ready ax, but its no felling ax and it probably wouldn't perform well under any major splitting jobs. Still man, great little creation, I'm loving this channel, and I hope to learn loads from you.
@jackitfast10 жыл бұрын
lol I have all those tomahawks & was thinking about getting the Trail Boss ax. Yours looks much better than stock. I use a long construction hammer handle on my Rifleman Tomahawk it works much better having it on a handle that doesn't become loose.
