Would be lovely for sure. But they would be extremely expensive to maintain and many museums simply can't afford to do it (or don't have a runway for it). But yes, would be nice.
@thestig8133
@thestig8133 11 ай бұрын
I do agree with you on that. But, it cost a good few million estimated between £3, 000, 000 & £10, 000, 000 + per aircraft estimated 🤔😟😟😟 just to maintain them for this let alone & for airworthy & airshows & flight tests. That's why they are far cheaper to have them in hangers or super size museums for the public to come & see.

Yeah it’s definitely a happy medium. I love to see them fly but so many irreplaceable historic aircraft have been lost and of course the loss of life that goes with it. But static displays seem to deteriorate and rot and often they are just shells patched up with pop rivets and tin. In run-up, taxi conditions lets you hear and feel them and takes to back to airports and bases where they were active. But…. It’s still about $$$… trying to find or make parts, having skilled mechanics to work on them and people proficient in running them.. or even just fuel which is consumed at a prodigious rate even at idle on most of these old birds.

@@ImpendingJoker Yes, but the Nimrod is extensively modified and will have been kept far more up to date, they were also still in active service all the way up until 2009. The comets were retired in the late 90's and weren't nearly as up to date. So it is still impressive the Comet is still capable of near take off speeds

From the days when Britain had a world leading aviation industry. Destroyed by politicians primarily in the 1960’s. I recall seeing most of these flying then. I now live in Cape Town,until a few years ago, it was possible to see Lightning, Bucaneer & Hunter’s flying even a Shackleton MR3. Brought back memories of great days & used to bring tears to my eyes.
@Bartonovich52
@Bartonovich52 11 ай бұрын
Wasn’t destroyed by politicians… unless you mean when Churchill bankrupted the nation fighting a war that pissed away an Empire and kept them in hawk until 2006. Politicians were the only reason they survived at all. Handley Page was a textbook example… without suckling at the government teat with bottomless and zero-risk cost-plus defence contracts.. it went bankrupt trying to make a tiny commuter aircraft. Collaboration and globalization was the key to survival. Even Boeing and Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman make only a fraction of their own planes.

Dad used to work on the Hawker Hunter at RAF Kemble many years ago and wrote 2 books about them. Delta Jets used those books as reference when they were still restoring the Hunter. I miss many hours with my Dad in front of them. We also went to RAF Wroughton, when he was working for the MOD there, and i remember a B17 Flying Fortress being absolutely dwarfed by the Avro Lancaster. Memories of wonderful aircraft and the shows we went to in the 70's and 80's.

Post WWII English music was the best in the world, think of both British invasions and all the famous bands. What a gift to mankind! But there was another gift, the gift of building some of the ugliest planes on the surface of the earth (whilst the Spitfire was the most beautyful).
@John-nc4bl
@John-nc4bl Жыл бұрын
The old Spit was an ugly aircraft with its narrow stance of landing gear. As well, Britain stole the idea from Germany for the planform of an elliptical wing since Gremany had flown elliptical winged aircraft long before Britain did. A P51 was a much more attractive looking aircraft than the ugly old Spitfire.
@LCdrDerrick
@LCdrDerrick Жыл бұрын
@@John-nc4bl See, I knew this with the eliptical wing, stolen from Junkers or some other German company. I wrote this under another Spit video, where I also claimed that the later Griffon Spit is the most beautyful aircraft, not static on the ground of course, with the silly narrow gear, which was built that way for rails transportation imho, but in the air. The ugly raised Merlin nose was corrected then, as to say stolen from the BF109. But the fanbois killed me for the story with the stolen wing. The Mustang however, with its stolen Merlin engine (the Yanks haven't been a technology nation back then) and its tumour under the belly and its silly narrow fuselage is, so to say from the same kind as any of the planes shown above, where nobody seemed to care for aesthetis, but only for function. Beauty is not a thing of taste, beauty and aesthetics is "objectifiable", shown e.g. in the golden section. Again, the P51 is not a beautiful, well proportioned aircraft. It is build from people who came from barbarism to decadence without even scratching the zenith of culture. At least for my taste ;). The canopy however was sleek!

Hi Mr Bobsurgranny! How would you like to try one of our binaural 3D mics for aircraft events? You can get a sense of what they are about on my channel of a Typhoon at Southport air show this year, but be sure to wear headphones and lower the volume to about 50% for the best experience :O) It's called binaural audio and is a clone of how we hear audio, so puts you there where the mic was.

Um, read the title of the video. These just high speed taxi runs. These aircraft have probably lost their airworthiness certificates, but at least they're essentially functional rather than being dead displays.

Remember seeing the newspaper pictures of Nimrod's being broken up mid build when the government cancelled the contract, so very very wasteful of taxpayers money. It carries on with all lane running motorways and HS2, they haven't got a clue, they know the price of everything and the value of nothing.😡

@Flying_GC

There is a big difference between airworthy and an aircraft that 'looks and may function' as an airworthy aircraft, but is actually far from the technical term of airworthy. Sounds weird I know. Over 20 years as a commercial pilot and some things still can be confusing for me even. Often it's time expired parts.
@rescue270
@rescue270 Жыл бұрын
Airworthy is a legal term that means "in a condition for safe operation AND in conformance with approved Type Design." Jet aircraft have quite a few parts in the airframes and engines that have service fatigue life limits. This means these parts must be replaced when they reach their maximum prescribed number of hours or cycles. All of these aircraft probably have parts that are beyond their mandated service limits, which are set forth in their original Type Design approval. Therefore, they are not legally airworthy. Furthermore, there are probably some very time-consuming and expensive inspections that are required to ensure safe condition, even if the life-limited parts are still within their service life limits. They may still be in a condition for safe operation for the moment, but that has to be proven and documented through inspection and Type Design research before they can be determined to be in Airworthy Condition. Even if no civil Type Certificate exists for them, such as the military aircraft, the governing civil aviation authority will require full inspections and viable life-limited parts before issuing an Experimental Exhibition type of airworthiness certificate. Making one of these legal to fly again would be mountainously expensive. Old airplanes are not like old cars where you can change fluids, plugs, and some rubber and go drive them. Well, you can drive them, like they're doing here. You can't fly them.
