Mark as always you have provided some great points and tips, we appreciate your years of support to the dive community. Here in the PNW when shore diving in cold weather we often bring along a 5 gallon GOTT or IGLOO water cooler (same as seen on a utility truck or Gatorade cooler use in field sports). Simply pop off the top lid and fill it with the hottest water from your bathtub. When you arrive at the dive site drop everyone’s hoods and any wet gloves in for a hot soak while you gear up. It’s makes for a nice transition to chilly waters! If doing multiple dives give your items a reasoak during your dive interval and you’re refreshed for the next round! It works like a charm. Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

Where I got my PADI Cert., all we had was Cold Water. It was between the islands off of Ketchikan Alaska. When we came up and broke the surface our black wet suits *immediately* started freezing and turned grey. My full body quarter-inch Farmer John was a half-inch in the torso, was indeed comfortable and never let me down.

Diving at Stoney Cove a few weeks ago between acting as surface support/child care for other divers, I hit a banging thermocline on the Stanegarth without a hood. I'm used to diving cold now but man, I will not be going down inland without a hood again. Two of us were in a fair bit of pain for a few minutes with, what felt like, all-over brain freeze!

Just last weekend I did the coldest dive of my life. I dove the Sacramento river near Redding CA. At 57 feet it was 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius). I discovered that I definitely go through gas faster. My steel 72 only lasted 30 minutes and had me nervously watching my SPG for the safety stop. I finished with 550 PSI at the end but it would have been very different had I spent five more minutes at max depth. Use caution when managing gas in the cold, the increased consumption could catch you out if you are not prepared for it.

@@aliasincognito0 yep it was a 7mm wetsuit. When I dove to eight feet I aborted, went back to shore for my hood and gloves, then picked up where I left off, a far happuer diver.

Another tip for ya folks; if your dive computer has bungee options, they will come in handy for these cold water dives when you need to put them on and when going down at depth (imagine trying to put on a watch strap with 5-7 mm gloves on)

When do you know you are too cold in a dive? when is it just push through it and being a little tough vs pushing your self too far? Are there early signs that you should not be ignored/pushed through? Lake Erie is my backyard, My last dive the water was 51F. I was able to last until my air was low about 1hr using a 5mm wet suit, gloves, hood and a venture hearted vest. about a half hour in I start to feel a bit cold in the extremities, i just deal with it while doing my best to prevent flushing my gear. i assume with my heated vest my core is temp is protected very well. thanks

@simplyscuba Can you review the Hollis 210/H-02 Deco regulator. Can it be used for Recreational diving, can you use Nitrox, can jt ve used for trimix? Is it a good first regulator to future proof?
