When things go wrong she will say: honey, couldn't we look in the basement? I have been teased several times by the lads for what I carry in the woods...it usually enda on me having the last laugh.... One of the last times I appeared in camp with a small ham (the entire front leg of a pig...and a couple of wine bottles...I can tell you that nobody laughed for long as they had their mouths full...! They also tease me because I like going traditional (mostly wool, leather, canvas, blanket)... I call them "lycra-boys" and gave them a vivid description on how they will die if a spark from the fire reaches their lycra clothes... they hare having nightmares since then!

Moving to Nigeria so basic bushcraft is essential. Unfortunately the "just in case scenarios" are an everyday reality for the people of Nigeria. I've only been a student of this type of preparedness for a few years, so green is an understatement, amen. Would love to have had the time and resources for my husband and I to take a class (or ten!) with ya.... You and The Corporal are my favorites. Be safe and God bless.

If you need a bag to act as the hang bag, a military NBC bag works great. keep everything dry, can be compressed well, and you can get them online for less than $10.

Coalcracker is half man half beast! He spits fire from the 151 he drinks and when he beds down for the night forest animals dont even dare to come close. Although, its been rumored that long ago he encounterd a black bear with his bare hands, carved chopsticks with its rib bone, feasted on its meat for days while drinking its blood.

Don't delete me lol. Love your energy and the simplicity of your load out. I personally couldn't deal with having the sleep kit bumping around on the bottom of my pack but I am looking at creating a strap system with quick release buckles to fix a day pack to a main kit. Nice video and a new subscriber.

I'm a kit junky too, and have some fantastic Gucci items for the woods. Have the disposable income and its part of the hobby. After a few years it sure mounts up. Finding time to actually getting out into the outdoors to use it all isn't always so easy. I do get outdoors a lot, but don't actually use much, nor need much, as frankly I'm too close to home. A lot of the "go faster kit" isn't robust enough for regular use. It may well be super light weight and help keep the weight down to make a short vacation that much more enjoyable, but a lot would be trashed in no time doing actual work. Military surplus often fairs better, but wow is it bulky and heavy. That mountain down jacket isn't made for forestry work. Trekking trainers aren't work boots. A folding saw can't do what a chainsaw can. Packing a bugout bag and having a week ready bush camp pack is comforting. Knowing how to use it all gives confidence. But it's the SAK in my pocket, or Leatherman on my belt, everyday; with a lighter and handkerchief in my pocket is my survival kit. (I do have a fully sorted survival tin, two: one big and one small, from my military days.) It's the knowledge that counts, and a brew kit that makes life easier. Being a Brit then Tea is an essential; forget that coffee rubbish.

..our first aid kit when out staking mining claims using an axe or brush hook to blaze the trees, we carried a roll of electrician's tape and a large women's kotex pad. I added an eyecup and safety glasses, because I always would get crap in my eyes bashing straight thru the Woods, always off-trail...

Good boots. Like $250+ working boots(Waterproof) or cleats which are probably preferable in winter, a small hatchet, machete, rope, knife(Multitool defintetely), firestarter, different canned foods, cooking pot, coffee, thermos. Also if it is really cold out can't say this enough get insulated coveralls, long johns, a ski mask, gloves, scarf and wear multiple layers over your coveralls and your hoods over the ski mask(Googles if you have them). Backpack and bedroll, protective sheet or tarp you can tie to trees for the wind/rain/snow(Or a tent) Bring changes of socks and underwear obviously. If you're in Canada bear spray and if you can manage to bring a saw of some type that will help with making a bed out of logs super easy. ALWAYS bring one full change of clothes that are dry and wrapped up in plastic inside your bag, don't let anything in your bag get wet and don't let yourself get wet if its cold. Oh and a Bow preferably 45-60 pound/arrows you never know what you can run into and its fun to shoot when out in the woods.

Nice tease on the tarp system, Danno! I just swapped my seasonal kits out yesterday, which means I added a baselayer set to the ditty bag I keep my underwear, socks and extra roll of TP in, and changed bags/blankets in my main kit. 👍

Great video! I really appreciate your time sharing! I just put together a bag today, but it was a "just in case" bag. Since I live in Northwest Wisconsin, it has long underwear, a baklava, mittens, and snow pants in it. Lately it's been super cold (like -10), so I haven't gone in the woods in a while, but I love to go out and sit in the snow! I just saw your channel, so I'll be back!

That sleeping bag is interesting I like how small it gets for storage, I am currently using the all season marine corps sleeping bag but its a little bulky. For an alternative ground cover you could try a Polycryo sheet, they are super lightweight and small when stored but works great as a moisture barrier! Thanks for the information!

Try wrapping the sleeping bag up into the Pad with your socks, etc... Then pitch it in the hang bag... Map be have a small rubber bath mat to sit on...

what do you do if there's no trees to tie your tarp to? or if there's chaotic winds and rain? i'm limited in experience to the Air Cadets but we were always taught to have at minimum a dry outfit and wet outfit, 1 for sleeping and 1 for the rest of the time. we were also recommended to wrap everything in plastic bags and have spares, because otherwise stuff WILL get wet no matter how "waterproof" your rucksack is

Do you own one? I’ve been considering one but I was questioning the quality. Is it painted oil cloth, liquid rubber, or rubber backing sewn to the canvas?

I believe that it is painted on to the canvas. My set up is an Army Shelter Half and I use the Gum Blanket for my floor. It keeps me dry. I put the black rubber side to the ground and the canvas can take a spark from a popping fire too. It will definitely hold up a lot better than a modern tarp will...especially to embers.

In winter I typically carry some waterproof/breathable gaiters and a pair of Kahtoola Microspikes. That combo has gotten me through plenty of dicey terrain where I live in the Pacific NW. Nice set of gear, Dan! I like your traditional bushcraft item choices. But that sleeping pad! lol there are smaller/lighter options...

I carry a very similar loadout when going out in the woods this time of year and in the winter. I also carry my Steripen because you never know, a whistle and two trioxane bars for emergency fire starting. I'm of similar build to you so I don't worry about a few extra pounds if it gives me more capability/comfort.

For me a larger rucksack works where most everything fits into one bag and everything else is on my person, in my pocket, on a belt and on a shoulder (the five pound haversack with all the 10 Cs.) I give less consideration to bulk and great consideration to weight-- less the better. I like your system. It's flexible.

Hi Dan, you just showed one bottle that you're carrying. Is that enough for your needs? I always find myself using two to three litres of water when staying a night out for drinking, some cooking, maybe having a hot drink as well, cleaning the kitchen stuff again, brushing teeth and so on. I'd just be interested if with your setup you cut down on many of these things or just do them differently. Great videos, cheers man!

I have lived on West Virginia my entire life and grow up in the woods. One piece of equipment I found to be very important that no one ever has is a .22 pistol. Rabbits, squirrels and whatever else you want to try to eat. It is also important to have with the out of control raccoon population and with rabies on the rise. It just seams odd that anyone would go into the woods without a good pistol.

Hey Eric, a good commonsense idea that should have come with a caveat: Make sure you know and follow the local gun laws. Having said that, my weapon of choice is a wrist rocket slingshot. It gets the job done and ammo is plentiful. It easily takes out small game and can deter some medium sized critters.

@@tag1462 I may of also forgot to mention that humans are more of a threat than an animal I ever ran into. WV gun laws are the best, PA is pretty relaxed to. Just wondering I've always had something withe that went bang. Love those little .22 revolvers.

@@erichuff6945 I agree that the most dangerous animal the woods is a Human. Ohio has open carry & CC laws I just prefer not to carry a firearm and avoid any potential hassles. For my personal defense I do carry a Bowie knife which I have found to be a decent enough deterrent.

@@tag1462 when I'm in Ohio I have to be careful. My CCW is good there and they have no problem with a side arm but fixed blade knives are not permitted unless your hunting. Ohio has some strange knife laws were WV has no knife laws. It's strange.

I've got something similar (cotton, blue / khaki reversible). Unfortunately, after 15+ years of continuous use it's just plain worn out to beyond being repairable. Haven't been able to find a suitable replacement last 2 years 😩. SAK's are the best thing since Bubble Gum .. had mine since the early 70's. Take care ..
