They did that to us in the Finnish Navy as well... Got orders to start skiing and after half an hour of skiing we got onto the ice and then suddenly ended up at a 10x4 meter hole in the ice... We had to ski one by one into the ice water, swim the 10 meters with a rifle around your neck and fully clothed, and then get up on the other side... Then get naked on the ice and change clothes from your bag which hopefully you'd packed properly... and then ski back to the company building... That memory will live with me forever :P

Rubenick We did this in the Norwegian army when I was there too, we had ropes around us though, so no danger of panicking and sinking, but still... Cold as all hell... The uniform kept the water out at first (water resistant), but then it flooded in from every opening, that shock almost paralyzed me...

Phelix Kelevra We didn't get any fancy water resistant uniforms.. We used the same uniform all year round... So the second you hit the water, you where completely wet :P At first they said that we where supposed to get ourselves up on the other side of the ice once we had swum the distance, but no one managed to do it... Everyone needed help getting up on the other side.

After watching an interview of Mr. Wilman I guess Jeremy had made the instructor quite cross earlier when they were discussing what to do if a polar bear charged. I guess you're supposed to give 4 of the 5 shots as warnings and if it doesn't veer off then shoot it in the head. Jeremy thought that was stupid and when it was his turn to shoot the snowpile target he put all 5 shots into the head. So yea, I guess the instructor was quite cross with him at that point.

Jeremy is in no way the healthiest. Tbh James probably is. Jeremy smokes like Hell, eats like crap, drinks a huge amount and at that point was minorly overweight. Hammond had had bits of brain damage and, despite being a vegetarian and drinking less, is still medically unstable. May might have drunk a lot, but he ate decently and didn't smoke.

We had to drop into icy Finnish sea water in January back in army training and swim back to the ice in around 7 minutes and then put our own weapon together. You go to instant shock when you drop with your clothes on and get your head under the water. When I was putting my weapon together my hands were all bloody as I had no idea my hands were full of small cuts possibly from the ice or for putting the weapon together. Then around 40 mins of uncontrollable shaking in thermal blankets before being allowed to go take warm shower. Certainly one of the more memorable things I did in army.

I have done it my self but I doubt in a real world situation that I would last 15 minutes. If you are stuck in a rut at a couple of minutes exhaustion would be enemy trying to keep a float and also thread water.
