I have to applaud all you winter backpackers and mountaineers because camping in this type of cold with no fire isn't my cup of tea really. It was cold, really pushing the limits of my gear for this type of hammock camping but still some beautiful winter scenery

Rob, the poncho liner is an amazing thing.....in Vietnam, those were prized possessions. In spring, summer and fall, I still often sleep with one as cover, at home, and of course when camping. They have the ability to be warm when its cool, and cool when its hot. Perfect for inside a tent, so check it out in the warmer times, if it does not meet your expectations for the hammock. We're getting our third snow of the yeah here in central Texas. WTF! Enjoyed your trip as always.
@BrooksandBirches
@BrooksandBirches 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome Jay! I'm not sure what's going on because I'm seeing pictures back home in the UK and they are getting loads of snow and now you guys in Texas are getting snow and we've hardly had any lol!! Crazy! Yeah I'm looking forward to using the poncho liner once the weather heats up because a lot of times when it's warm I don't even get in my sleeping bag so I think this will be perfect for summer canoe trips. I bought one because I was at my brother-in-laws and he had his from the marines in his living room and he was saying how awesome it was when he was on deployment

Beautiful area. I was cold just seeing the snow and ice in the creek. The under quilts are down, so under the hammock they stay fluffy and warm just like sleeping bag, when compressed not as warm, if you closed in the ends of your tarp, like a tent, would have blocked some wind off as well. It's expensive to get everything you need, I admire you for trying. I always enjoy your vlogs. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic drone work and beautiful scenery but you looked like you had a rough night Rob. I took to the floor for a while when I realized my insulation wasn't up to the job for winter hammock camping as it's no fun when you wake up chilled to the bone. I would seriously consider either buying or making an underquilt for the temperatures you want to camp in. ATB from West Yorkshire 👍.

oh man, it generally sucks to be cold and sounds like you were pushing the limits of your gear so thanks for this great episode. Next time you get a chance, pickup a half dozen or so of the chemical/thermal handwarmers. they typically only cost around $1 USD for a two pack and each pad last up to 12 hours putting out some serious warmth. they get so hot I've used them to warm up my cold sandwiches on occassion

Outstanding cinematography, loved it. A note on the poncho, the swagman roll (Helikon-Tex equivalent of the honcho poncho) works great as an underquilt. I've shown it in a couple of my older videos if you're interested. Already looking forward to the next video, hope you don't have to get up so early then, must be such a pain. Also (almost done haha), I'm also struggling with the cold, my phone dies whenever I come close to freezing. I keep it in a down pouch close to my body. Nevertheless, it always dies at the worst times haha.

I'm here watching liking & all that but I saw you with that sandwich and man I gotta pause a minute and get me one *edit: Back Woahhhh....Rob without a fire? I can't remember ever seeing that before. Tough cubes on this one! Mom just wanted to know if you had to pee the whole time. Teeheehee old ladies always so overly concerned with one's genitals!
@BrooksandBirches
@BrooksandBirches 3 жыл бұрын
hahaha you might be making a couple more sandwiches in the coming weeks Cleo because I'm trying to remember to bring more food with me from now on! Really tough cubes, I don't really like not having a fire to be honest but it was late and there wasn't really a great spot to have on on this trip Hahah honestly I did! I usually have to get up at least once in the night but this time I just held it until I had to get up lol

What the hell happened? Why did you go from going to bed to into your truck? No explanation as to how the night went. As soon as I saw your setup I said, "You are going to be cold!" Way underprepared for a hammock hang in 10° F. But I would have liked to hear your summation. The woobie under your sleep pad was not going to help much without an underquilt to hold the heat. You must have froze your ass off. I am going on a winter hammock hang next week in similar temps and I will have twice the insulating factor you had. Underquilt and overquilt with sleeping pad. Please let me know how your night went, really curious.

You probably wished you had brought your hot tent with you; or there is tent that you can use a hammock maybe make into hot tent comforts of both

Yeah this trip would have been perfect for a hot tent, if it wasn't for the fact I had used the hot tent a couple of weeks ago I probably would have used it again!

I've got a bridge hammock. It cuts down on the squeeze. I gotta give it a whirl in winter conditions and see how it goes. Only been below freezing a couple times with it.

Your photography has become rather cinematic with the drone footage. Every time you set up camp in the snow now, I think you're going to wang your knuckles with a clamp again. I would have shouted ever curse word ever conceived. Don't know how you stayed so quiet. LOL.

@@BrooksandBirches I've done that kind of thing too so I felt every minute of that! From your reaction I just knew it had to have hit your knuckles. You'd think your fingers wouldn't feel it but it's almost as if they become more sensitive before they lose feeling. LOL. As usual, thanks for the reply. Cheers.

Why would you camp by a waterfall? Lmao!! Too awesome once again.. Word to the wise.. When it comes to sleeping in the cold, let the bag do the work.. They are rated for body temp.. The less clothes you wear to bed, the warmer you are.. A human is around 98 inner core and radiates outward becoming less, however your outside body temp is actually warmer than the outside therefore any bag you have should have been sufficient... Jus sayin..

Thanks Kevin! Yeah I always layer down when I get into my bag! It really does make a big difference. Normally I bring a pair of thermal underwear with me that I sleep in and put my clothes down in the bottom by my feet
