Cold Climate Housing rocks! Thanks Ilya. My husband and I are very grateful for this video - it helped us think through and solve a group of problems in our humble 20x30 monopitch with a boxbay home design in wet Otsego Cty NY. We're doing 2x6 stud wall advanced framing with dense pack (if we can find someone who can dense pack!) with wall assembly of sheathing/Roxul rainscreen/furring/reverse board&batten. Floor will be 14" truss, with a cantilevered 4foot bump out for the boxbay 12 feet wide. The roof will be 4/12 monopitch but otherwise much like your design - except using 16" ijoist rafters 24 OC which again - we hope to dense pack. Dense packing will present further pressures in the assembly - you've done 2lbs here - we're hoping for 4lbs. I've been thinking we'd place structural 2x4's at midpoint 12"OC between the ijoist rafters. If you have any thoughts, really love to hear them. Warmest regards, Jennie and John

how does rockwool compare to blown in cellulose insulation? Is cost the biggest drawback to rockwool?

Good stuff. If you were blowing in from the top, couldn't you just drywall first (after the poly) and then blow in from above? In other words, wouldn't that be enough strength to hold the blow in?

When blowing in from below, maybe put the poly and the 2x4 strapping on first? Then you wouldn’t have to insulation to fight against at all. Would the strapping be in the way for blowing in the insulation?

We're about to start insulating our cathedral ceiling. You placed the vapor barrier between the fiberglass insulation and the rigid foam with the reflective barrier but I was wondering if could we place the vapor barrier in front of the rigid foam instead? I've seen rigid foam cut into thin strips and placed along the joists only. Just to simply slow down the heat transfer that occurs through wooden joists and to add extra depth for thicker batting. I like that idea because it would cut down on the cost for the rigid foam but I'm concerned about putting a vapor barrier over it. Our cabin is already built so we'll be adding the venting channels on the interior of the roof. Thanks for the wonderful video. Building up here can be a little daunting at times.

Thanks for the feedback. We're probably overly concerned about condensation problems with the cold roof system. Looking at costs for all materials and time demands its starting to look like closed cell spray foam will be about the same cost with less stress and problems down the track.

+Ilya Benesch Oh wow I did not expect a reply, thank you. Based on your video and another simplifying the venting concept, like you said stop the air infiltration/ heat loss first. Unless advised against it, I am going with 5:12 pitch with 2 X 12 on a gable beam on a 24' wide home. Starting at the ceiling, 1/2 inch sheet rock, 1" XPS, 6 mil poly, installed by a contractor hard pack cellulose, 1/2' OSB, 2 X 4 furring, OSB sheathing then a normal composite roof with membranes and water/ice shields. I will look into the vent you suggested and I want to add a Cupola on the Cathedral and on the gable/joist side of the house. I like the look and think if snow covers the vent the cupola will work, or is this too much top system venting? Again I love your video, keep up the good work, I have shared your site with other friend that they think they know it all, ha, ha, ha.

Great video. Couldn't you just cut notches or drill holes in the blocking to maintain the ventilation path up the roof, so you could eliminate all the extra lumber for the top side air space?

When blowing from above, do you pick up after yourself? In the spring, it may look like here in Florida after a hurricane takes a roof off and scatters blown in insulation all over the place. Seems like if that method was practiced widespread, it would become an issue. Maybe birds and squirrels will come to the rescue and use it for their nests!😂
