Given, you should already have another job lined up so that you don’t have to go a few weeks without pay. But, if that’s not an option, govt welfare during covid is pretty good. Not great, but better than nothing. At least right now, employers are so desperate for new employees, they’re often willing to schedule weird hour interviews or phone interviews, so not having time for an interview isn’t an excuse. Feeling trapped and actually being trapped are two different things. So poverty shouldn’t cause any issues, again, in the US. I can’t speak for other countries because I don’t live in them, so maybe it’s different in India or elsewhere.

Not included in this video: Miguel Bezos (Jeff's adopted father) worked for ExxonMobil for 3 decades as an engineer and held management positions... they married in 1968... and Jeff was born in 63 so he was 5 when that financial stability kicked in. The 25,000 acre ranch he grew up working on was his maternal grandmother's (the famous George Strait line of the family)... I'm sure his life wasn't super easy, but it is also true that Jeff isn't exactly the total rags-to-riches self made man one might think. I honestly think his adopted father has the more impressive story. Jeff's background appears to be broadly middle class. In 1995, his parents loaned him $300,000 to help get Amazon off the ground. That's about a half million in today's money (and probably much more than that in next week's money 😉). This is not to minimize his accomplishments. I just think we should push past the PR and look at the facts in context. Bezos certainly had opportunities not available to everyone (but fewer than some) and he made the most of the hand he was delt.

Eventually I’m going to need to start more businesses and then that’s when things get interesting. @@28ebdh3udnav Yeah but he's still not paying a fair share. If I make 50K a year I get taxed on that 50K. If Amazon stock increases 100% in 4 years Jeff's wealth goes from 100B to 200B meaning he made 25B per year. Most of that 25B is tax free because he barely sells stock. Instead he takes out a secured loan (25B as collateral) and he lives off the loan. Meaning he can technically use his money without selling his stock and only paying like 2% interest for his loan. This is clearly a cheat for the rich. They get to accumulate wealth tax free because 99% of their income is awarded in stock. This bypasses income tax. Then whenever they need cash they take out loans against their stock, bypassing capital gains tax, and use the loan as spending money. Meanwhile an average Joe like me can't do that. First most of my wealth is awarded as paycheck. Even if I wanted 100% of my check in stock my employer wouldn't allow it. I can put a fraction of my income in a tax free 401K but that's it just a fraction. The government limits how much you can put in a 401K because if it was unlimited we would all be avoiding taxes just like bezos.

I think we see this kind behavior at most companies regardless of how people get treated. People with seniority or tenure usually put in less effort once they know they have job security. But these jobs aren't supposed to be the kind of job where people do them for more than 5 years or so, they are starter jobs hard work yes, but the kind of hard work that makes people respect a good job or the ability to go into a career where they enjoy working. But this is just my opinion, i know not everyone sees it this way. My very first job was in a factory that sold curtains, I would spend hours inside of a huge box cramming as many curtains as possible into that box. I lasted about 2 months. After that I never worked in a factory/shipping environment again. But when i was there i met some people who had been doing that job for over 15 years and they loved it. So all I'm saying is everyone is different and working at a place like that can do 2 things. Either create a long term drone, or someone who goes on to find something they enjoy doing like the design work i do now.

Bezos is an icon for everything that is wrong with the current economic system. A person that reaps in hundreds of billions while his workers literally pee in bottles and faint at his companies' work points. Pretty much no holidays, inhumane work hours that permit no time for one's family or oneself and extremely low pay. Also a natural monopoly exacerbates the problem, removing the possibility for an alternative company to compete and bringing better working conditions or customer protection. Anti union practices are down right criminal and even more amoral. Bezos is literally a symbol for most of the things that are wrong with the world of today. Antitrust laws should be reinforced after years of destroying them. For that to happen the US needs to get rid of the two party system and FPTP. Amazon's work culture is easily the worst and most toxic among big tech. A friend who's in a better position in AWS development team fixed a vulnerability, for which he was promised a spot award. But the actual award he got was very bizzare. They told him that that real result of the fix would be visible 2 years down the line, so he was granted the award, but it will be fully credited after 2 years, if he stays that long. So so toxic I can't even begin.

@@RepEvox Except it’s not a restricted stock. It’s a spot bonus. Usually that kind of vulnerability fixes/optimizations/improvements are rewarded with instruments of immediate monetary value, not a promise on a future date. They serve a different purpose compared to restricted stock units which incentivize staying longer at a company. Literally every other tech firm rewards such things with gifts like ipads, playstations, or vouchers, even bonus payments. I do not need to say more about poor work life balance of Amazon’s tech employees, horrible engg. culture, cut-throat competition etc. The world knows it all, and even if you didn’t just go to any review site, and look at reviews of Amazon’s software engineering jobs.

7:00 - A little bit was gone into with the whole "loans avoid taxes" thing, but the biggest problem I find is that people don't understand that net worth IS NOT bank account balance. It only means something if they sell their stock in the company they own - in other words, net worth means "what their companies are worth, if someone bought them". It's like saying that your precious dish collection is worth $10k. It isn't worth anywhere near that much if nobody is willing to (or in the Net Worth case - even able to) pay that much for it. Avoiding taxes through loans is not great, and could use some reform I'm sure. But really, people need to quit mixing up net worth with some idea of a bank account balance (this "dollars per minute" stuff).

After watching an Amazon documentary it would appear that Bezos has a pretty ruthless anti competitive business streak. Also when it comes to his Amazon Fulfillment Centre employees it seems he works them pretty hard to the point that they actually don't like working for Amazon and his comments about them paying for Blue Origin is simply gaslighting. They certainly don't' feel apart of this accomplishment. Unlike the janitor at NASA that felt apart of Apollo program, even though his part was small, he still felt apart of the NASA family.

@@lelouchvibritannia1788 He started off by selling books out of his warehouse, so that Amazon became the dominant buyer from publishers, so he then drove prices down. The part about the echo devices is a bit misleading. The amazon devices only send audio snippets of you to amazon when you say "hey alexa". If the device would constantly send out an audio stream it would be too much for even amazon servers to handle this and the power consumption would be insane too. So it is still a huge problem, but it isn't like suggested, that amazon has a constant stream of your home audio
