Lacquer thinner or Acetone will clean up the brass and handle. Any brass polish will shine the hilt. Keeping the knife in the sheath will make the brass turn green and stain the sheath leather if stored in the sheath over a short time. Treating the Sheath and knife handle with Neatsfoot oil will preserve the leather and not harm the handle. If you clear coat the brass it will resist changing color. If not, it will tarnish like any brass will. It is a cool looking knife.👍

Agree with JMP-71 Brasso, it may take 2 or 3 cleanings, then polish with flitz, is that piece maybe to put an end of guard, but there would be 2 of them. handle may need a light sanding and some type of clear flat finish coating, polyurethane or lacquer based, thanks for showing.

I had the same issue with my guard on mine, the stain was everywhere. I'll use some Brasso, when I get around to it. A great knife.

I had the same problem with my handle, it was sticky and would leave the color on your hands. I took the staining off with some rubbing alcohol and a microfiber towel, so it’s a nice reddish color now. To clean the brass I use brasso, the brass tarnishes pretty soon after anyways though. How were the grinds on yours? The last inch or so closest to the guard on mine was left un-sharpened.

Not far from you. I live just north of Philadelphia. As others have stated, Flitz will totally clean up the brass.

Brasso, Case paste, or Flitz will get that brass shiny. I had that same plastic piece in my box also, I think it might have been a tip protector for shipping. On the handle, you will want to remove some of that stain if you like the look of wood. They put way too much stain making it look black. Check out what mine looks like now. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnepoYetrdSKqNE No tacky feeling anymore

Sounds like your knife was in long term storage. I don't know who you bought it from but I wouldn't buy from them again. Any kind of metal polish should clean it up. Brass-O is a good option. You can probalby save the knife and sheath but, I think you might be beyond help, Pete. Good luck with the knife. I'm sure you can fix

Brasso, Brasso, Brasso! My Bucks have become well-acquainted with it, as has my Spyderco Schempp Bowie (although I found I actually like that knife with a bit of tarnish). Trust me, the brass guard is gonna be fine. The handle scales now have some character; don't worry about them! Loving that Bowie, by the way.

@@jerseyknifeguy6382 No problem! If you can't get any, Flitz also works. It tends to polish a little more quickly, but I've noticed that there's a such thing as overpolishing and Brasso gives you a bit more control over that.

An American 🇺🇸 Legend, for sure - absolutely 💯% gorgeous 😍 Brasso, does a good job. For me, if you want to keep it shiny for a lot longer, then use: Vinegar + Flour + Salt *Combine equal parts of white vinegar, flour, and salt to make a damp paste that's not runny. Use a soft cloth to apply the mixture to tarnished brass and let it sit for 30 minutes. Grab a fresh, damp cloth and wipe away the paste, then rinse the item and buff it dry... Hope that helps, stay well 🙏 Jersey, Atb Gus 👍
