1. Choice of the model. The choice of the model is generally determined by the humour of the induction port andthe shape of the pipe. The solex type fv (with vertical offtake) can aye be adaptedwhatever may be the humour of the port. The solex type fh (with horizontal offtake) isonly intended for monobloc engines having a single induction port and when fitting like it isnecessary to be sure that there is sufficient pate of petrol to supply the carburettor regardlessof the inclination of the horse or appliance

"You know, Sir, my wife, Mrs. Columbo, thinks I get carried away with details, but sometimes it helps me in my work. When you said your partner must have driven the car over the cliff, that's where you made your mistake. You see, the Peugeot 403 has a worm gear in its rear end. When our technician opened the casing, he found that worm gear in a million pieces. We know you nerfed your partner over that cliff, because if he'd killed himself driving off the edge, the car would be a wreck, but that gear would have been fine. You almost got away with it, Sir, but I'm afraid you're under arrest."

Our closest neighbour in my small Swiss village was a farmer who loved his Peugeots. He had his old 403 sitting in his barn and beside that one he had his newest possesion, a beautiful 404. In a barn I have been tinkering on my cars for years a guy had his 403 pickup that he had bought from a French farmer. The bed was made of wood. A reliable little thing.

My college roommate Gene got a (1959?) 403 in the late '60s. It can't have been very expensive, since he didn't have any money. It had a metal sunroof (no leak!) and the front seats had been replaced with bucket seats (from a Renault, IIRC). It was a comfortable and smooth-riding car. Gene commuted a dozen or so miles to school each day, including a short stretch of interstate, and after a couple weeks he found the owner's manual and learned that it had 4 speeds. Much quieter, and better mileage, after that discovery! It was terrifying to see the steering wheel wobble violently whenever we encountered potholes, but he found he could take his hands off the wheel and the car didn't deviate from its intended direction. The starter became intermittent in the summer, so Gene kept a baseball bat beside the driver's seat so he could easily tap (bash?) the starter into operation. We and our fraternity buddies were endlessly amused by the car's French-ness, but it was quite reliable.

I've loved French cars from childhood, no doubt because among my beloved 1970s Corgi Juniors, Matchboxes, and Hot Wheels, there were many Majorettes - my faves being the Renault 5 and Simca 1100Ti, which I still have over 45 years later.

Mr.Columbo was an LA based major crime detective with uncanny logical deductive skills. He drove a 403 convertible. The car was pretty “ ratty “ but obviously loved by its owner. The car almost achieved “ character” status in the show. Check out an episode on KZbin to see a running driving 403. Cheers! Keep up the great work.
