Cole Porter: piano variations | Moisés P. Sánchez

In Cole Porter's songs the traits of personal expression that would come with rock & roll are not so marked, so they are better suited to be versioned or as ground for improvisation. Moisés P. Sánchez takes advantage of this versatility to reinterpret them with his personal way of understanding jazz. Through the variation procedure, the pianist proposes to "de-standardize" these melodies and make the themes germinate in universes with their own aroma.

Uno de los pianistas más originales del actual panorama del Jazz. La técnica, el talento y la imaginación se le caen de los bolsillos, es evidente. Y reinventa los temas clásicos inmortales como los de este recital, de un modo a veces tan brutal que más que interpretarlos los compone de nuevo. Y eso todavía no tengo claro si me acaba de convencer o no. Me recuerda a Ivo Pogorelich tocando a Beethoven, que aquello ya no es Beethoven, es Pogorelich. Y enmendarles así la plana al genio de Bonn o a Cole Porter es asunto serio. Pero desde luego las melodías que se saca Moisés son bellísimas, a veces extasiantes, sensación acrecentada por la pureza del sonido que sale del Steinway que tiene entre manos. Así que reparos filosóficos aparte, he disfrutado mucho, pero mucho, con este fantástico recital. Aunque no sea mi Cole Porter favorito 😉.
