Excellent video. I just bought a used UT400 and my issue is that it doesn’t want to shift into forward gear most of the time unless I get the rpm up a little first. The shift lever has been extended and the cable adjusted. Any ideas?

@@denvid321 engine speed is not relevant as this design uses a dog gear ⚙️ system. I’d strongly suggest changing the oil. Get some 4T 10w40 engine oil and a new filter. Mobil1 is what I use on the vehicles I repair. You can use whatever you would prefer. The oil needs to be a motorcycle oil as this engine does have a wet clutch also. If the engine oil is Low, this may/could also cause the issue you are having. At some point I’m sure you will run into the gear jumping out if you machine if it is older than 21/22’ build year. Have you verified the shifter select on dash matches the gears on the transmission? What I mean by this is to pull the cable off the transmission side, put shifter in F or R and go back and manually put transmission into each gear and then try and slide the shift cable on to verify that it matches shifter. I’d recommend favoring the forward gear more if adjustments are needed. Often times your shifter detent and transmission detent will not match, this is something cable adjustment will not correct, only adding or removing length to the shifter lever will correct this.

@@JoseTrejo1 Thanks for replying. I recently changed the oil, but I used Valvoline 4-Stroke ATV/UTV Motor Oil. I'll do it again with the mobil 1. The cable seems right. I'm afraid that I have a problem with the gear stack or something because it doesn't want to go into forward sometimes when I actuate the shifter by hand (cable disconnected).

Mine has a shift problem that just started. It's 6 years old and just started. Reverse works fine. In drive it goes, but will buck and grind a little, like something is slipping a little. Any thoughts that this could be related to your shift issues?

Yes. The gears are pretty solid for the unit design. Typically it’s just not engaging all the way like it should. You likely rounded the gear out where it was making contact. How many miles or hours on the unit? Doing the rebuild isn’t that difficult if you have a little know how and willingness to dive into it, it’s just a little time consuming. Thanks. Good to know. I'm about to try adjusting the cable, as mine doesn't engage Forward immediately -- slips, then clacks, then pops in. Now to figure out why it's not shifting out of 4WD...?

It could very well be the switch. As a heads up, While I was servicing the Coleman 400utv I found various connections not fully connected where the retention clip was not even engaged over the locking tab on the receiving connector. I was blown away at the lack of execution taken on this machine. Go over your connections and make sure everything is properly seated and secure. You can likely check continuity of the 4wd switch if you have a meter.
