@@alanfreemancriticalracethe524 Sorry, I'm not able to make the connection between what you wrote here to what I wrote. Not sure what point you're trying to make. Perhaps you're just making a random general statement. Further, the importance of one's knowledge of CRT depends on the context of the situation. If a lawyer is trying to apply CRT to legal studies or defense, yes, for sure, that person better know her shit about CRT inside and out. If we're talking about the hot topic of 'CRT' in classrooms in primary education, that's another story. I put quotes around CRT here because in the classroom situation we're not actually teaching CRT 101 and putting out reading materials by Crenshaw or Delgado. Here is where things gets muddy and very emotionally charged. It's not something I'm interested talking about over internet texting.

I do acknowledge that this so-called self-refutation argument probably is not an irrefutable argument against relativism, but even so it is something proponents of CRT should have an answer to. Exactly. It's baffling to me that anyone would still adhere to relativism. It seemed prolific on the popular level in the last 10-20 years, but seems to be falling off now that the hyper-activists are wanting to assume control. They naturally see that they have to abandon relativism and "tolerance" in order to claim their mantle as leaders. By the way, remember the word "tolerance"? I never heard it anymore.

The problem with valorizing a "black value structure" over a "white value structure", is that we've seen the results of operating under these cultures in terms of human flourishing. Africa isn't as prosperous as Europe, including those parts of Africa (North Africa) that enslaved white people rather than the other way around. Rejecting the incredibly positive aspects of the cultural legacy of Europe (Christian ethics, science, technology, etc) does vastly more damage to the prospects of black people in America (and elsewhere) than any credible effects of racism today.

"Who is the Godfather of Critical Race Theory" Derrick Bell. "and how did he shatter the shining image of a celebrated Supreme Court civil rights ruling?" After Brown v. Board of Education was decided in 1954, Professor Herbert Wechsler questioned whether the Supreme Court's decision could be justified on the basis of "neutral" principles. To him Brown arbitrarily traded the rights of whites not to associate with blacks in favor of the rights of blacks to associate with whites. Prof. Derrick Bell suggested that no conflict of interest actually existed; for a brief period, the interests of the races converged to make the Brown decision inevitable. More recent Supreme Court decisions, however, suggested to Professor Bell a growing divergence of interests that made integration less feasible. He suggested the interest of blacks in quality education might be better served by concentration on improving the quality of existing schools, whether desegregated or all-black. harvardlawreview.org/wp-content/uploads/1980/01/518-533_Online.pdf

The word "theory" is a bit confusing as it can mean different things. But basically, in any field, a theory is a framework or approach to understanding a topic. Scientific theories like atomic theory, germ theory, theory of evolution, etc are well established and supported by facts. But even those theories can be replaced, like how Einstein's theory of gravity replaced Newton's. In social studies, there are many more ways to interpret the same things, so theories are more like perspectives rather than factual frameworks.

I hear a lot of people say CRT is just a philosophy or theory, so people who don’t like it are getting “carried away”. The issue with that is you can give something a definition on paper and say “well this is all it means” but its how it is being practically used in society that is upsetting people…not the definition of the theory on paper. No one cares if you want to teach it in a college philosophy class as a theory along with other theories, but teaching grade school students to view/define everything through the racial lens is the problem. Teaching young minds good race/bad race and good gender/bad gender is dangerous.

CRT is being applied all around us, but not as a singular expression. It was never designed to be implemented that way. "Equity" over "equality," and rejecting analytical thinking as a white supremacist construction are two examples of applied CRT. Other examples include the call to rewrite the Constitution because it is a white supremacist document, and the 1619 project which is a make-believe rewrite of American history. All are designed to tear society apart and prepare it for a revolution. As Kendi openly says, "Anti-racism cannot exist in a capitalist system." It is a totalizing theory that is permeating every corner of our culture, but few seem to notice or care.

The word “theory” is used in two main senses: scientific and legal. In the scientific sense, a theory is an explanation with predictive value which has been tested in various ways and _not disproven_. In the legal sense, a theory is an argument. _Critical Race Theory_ is an argument.
@mrridikilis
@mrridikilis 3 жыл бұрын
...."with predictive value" hits the nail on the head! A Theory in the hard sciences has been studied so intensively, with so many data points, and can be used to predict outcomes so consistently that it points to something that we can (with great certainty) claim to represent our best, objective understanding of a phenomenon in the world. Theories in the social sciences, economics, law etc. cannot do this in the same way, and need to be understood as hypotheses or philosophies. At best they can describe objective reality well; at worst they're ideological and doctrinal.
@bwake

@@mrridikilis I would distinguish between the social sciences and the legal system. The social sciences are _more difficult_ than the physical sciences because they are more difficult to observe. We can hope it is at least possible to get real information. Legal “theories” begin with advocacy. A lawyer is a hired gun. Some hired guns are picky about the jobs they take. Some are not. They all have to eat, so if there isn’t work available, some will invent jobs for themselves.

It lives and dies on whether objective moral values and duties exist, i.e. moral facts that are independent of human opinion. People often reject that because of all the baggage that comes along with it, such as moral culpability to an ultimate moral authority outside humanity. And as far as proof goes, we’ll just have to use our moral intuition. Like moral facts, we can’t prove mathematics without first presupposing mathematics. The same goes for the laws of logic. We can’t empirically prove those either.

The question (and Coleman's answer) appears to be using the scientific standard for the word theory; if we assume that we are holding the standard of philosophical theories to those of scientific theories, then the premise of the question (and the answer) is correct. Tbh, seems to be an honest misunderstanding of this false equivlancy between the multiple definitions of the word "theory". At worst the person asking the question was intentionally using a semantic trick in bad faith; suggesting because CRT has "theory" is in the name, and because it fails to meet objective standards of a scientific theory (vs the everyday meaning of "theory"), CRT is therefore wholly invalid. Either way, Coleman's point on the coherence is valid. And there's an argument to be made that given our modern understanding of science (data, objectivity, testability, reproducibility, etc) that philosophical frameworks should be subject to scientific scrutiny, as opposed to granting validity under the traditionally lower bar for burden of proof in philosophy.

Within a particular society what is defined as truth is based on intersubjectivity, meaning a shared agreement or consensus exists which individuals use to define what is true. For an individual to discern what is true invariably ties with how a shared enivronment; including education, media, and economy has moulded all individuals to define truth in a shared way. In today's America the intersubjectivity of truth in regards to the pressing social issues have been challenged. Taking a look at history, processes of reformation, enlightenment, and liberation move society towards a new intersubjective equilibrium.
@barryon8706

No, I don't think so. A lot of things held to be true are not based on shared agreement or consensus. H2O is water. You can use different symbols for H , O, or even 2, and of course a different word for water, but in whatever language you end up speaking the equivalent of H2O will b the equivalent of water. Likewise, it's objectively true that in the United States kids raised by two parents tend to do better economically. It's objectively true that Blacks are raised by one parent more frequently than Whites, who are in turn more often raised by one parent than Asians or Jews (in America). That society will change is, of course, true. People try to redefine racism so that treating everyone as equal is somehow racist. People even insist on taking things that result in less liberty and calling it "liberation."

@@Michelle_Wellbeck No, objective truth is not a social construct. That's simply incorrect. Scientists may disagree on the rigor or amount of evidence required to pass, but we still get objective truth. Science, strictly speaking does not prove things, but it does disprove them.. For instance, we may continue to refine the value of G, but we know it isn't 42. The left can decide that "other ways of knowing are equally valid," but I think they should be the first ones to drive over a bridge designed by astrology.
@Michelle_Wellbeck

@@barryon8706 Scientific inquiry itself has shown that the existence of an "objective" outside of the subjective is itself tenuous. The copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics posits that the position of electrons is probabilistic and becomes fixed only upon observation or measurement. It would follow that theories, scientific or otherwise are better understood as not corresponding 1 to 1 with reality but instead as representing workable tools to predict and manipulate reality, to which different tools may be better or worse at dealing with specific situations. The ancient greeks would know which situations they would resort to physiscs and others when they would use astrology. In a wider sense it is wise to question those who claim to represent "objectivity" when the concept is not as easy to grasp as one would imagine.

Liberia began in the early 19th century as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS), which believed black people would face better chances for freedom and prosperity in Africa than in the United States. If they truly believe that American society was built by and for the exclusive benefit of white people and that all societies are built to benefit a particular group, why be such a destructive force? Another example of why Marx quipped "Je ne suis pas un Marxiste [I am not a Marxist]" when asked about some of the bizarre and absurd things some "Marxists" were saying and doing in his name in his own time. It is actually completely contrary to Marx, who had utmost contempt for armchair philosophers (hence, "armchair Marxist" is oxymoronic), and these bourgeois bloviators' and day dreamers' musings could only make sense to someone who lives in a library or lecture hall after being brought up by the Internet and having grown up in a completely "virtual" world. In any case, theories like CRT are self indulging products of academic elites, not of any workers or impoverished people, and designed to maintain those elites' hegemony over the rest of society as a CLASS, as self appointed moral authorities (or, as I liked to say, as the high priest class of the new woke religion), not to "liberate" any "oppressed" people. Like modern day Scribes and Pharisees they manufacture "sins" to keep the public bowed and cowed to their self assumed, moral authority.

A theory is a living, working, model used to predict outcomes, hopefully demonstrating that its predictive validity coefficient is rather high. In the arts, where this lamentable 'theory' festers, calling it a theory is indeed close to funny, and diminishes what could be a limited useful purpose for it, that being to encourage dialog. It is not testable, falsifiable, and has no empirical footprint from which to defend it. Lastly, it is prescriptive, and not descriptive. This removes it from the realm of 'theory'. Now, I know the counterargument will be that what I impute to the concept of a theory is merely a white person's patriarchal concept, and therefore null and void. This is what is known in formal logic as 'petitio principii', or 'begging the question'. The person uttering the claim is using as a premise the very thing he is charged with proving.

That’s too much fancy footwork. The word theory has different meanings based on context. Broadly speaking, a theory is simply a narrative used to make descriptive collective sense of a set of facts. Not every theory has to satisfy the definition of a *scientific* theory to be deserving of the term. CRT seeks to make particular sense of social reality by examining the relationships between the otherwise disparate facts that are the building blocks of that reality.

I don’t disagree you. Certainly we all share the same values in many things across cultural lines. But the rhetoric of CRT or the purpose of it these days is a reaction to racial disparities in many areas. So people who subscribe to the idea that any racial disparity must be racism, voila, here’s CRT to explain it - society built on white values can only benefit whites the most.

"There can be a race neutral value structure." In the abstract, yes. In the practical, attempts to build one are dependent on all races playing ball. If some races want to build the race neutral value structure and some don't, then there's a problem. "All cultures share the most common values" The usage of 'all' is an overstand. That list is nowhere near universal. Conquest-aligned cultures view murder as positive. Examples: Classical Hinduism, Vikings, Biblical Hebrews, Daesh, American Neocon/Neolibs Raiding-aligned cultures view stealing as positive. Examples: Vikings, Colonial-era West Euros Face-aligned cultures view lying as positive, if lying preserves the face of a loved one or group. Examples: Central / East Asian cultures Parental Rebellion-aligned cultures view rebellion against parents as positive. Examples: Post-60s US, Cultural Revolution-era China Welfare-aligned cultures view being on the dole as positive. Examples: Modern US Critical Theory-aligned cultures view dismantling authority as positive. Examples: Modern US Marxist-aligned cultures view the abolition of private property as positive. Examples: Any Marxist grouping The only one that's _truly_ universal is protecting the vulnerable and weak, but even there local views on what constitutes 'protection' vary wildly. For instance, in the UK they believe that women are 'protected' by having their rights and freedoms and should dress and travel as they like, and in Afghanistan they believe that women are 'protected' by being swaddled in cloth and hidden from the sight of men

Im not sure saying replacing white values with black is the best way to put it for the common person.. Lots of emotions on both sides of this debate. You could basically, just ask the question why did the US have a civil war? If you don't mention anything about slavery then that's what CRT is trying to change.. so basically if you didn't get taught in school just how prominent slavery was in the rationale for the south's secession then you are misinformed, and it is in part because of the system that was put into place not long after the civil war ended. The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a big part of that, they are why we have statues of confederate generals all over the south. These are tangible things that happened and can be backed up with primary sources.. so about as good as it gets in regards to historical fact. Hell, even that sounds controversial, doesn't it? Maybe we could call CRT a toolbox, or a mechanism for understanding the past, so then we as a society can understand each other just a little bit better. CRT reminded me a bit of the 3rd wave feminism that was big about a decade ago.. and still is in some ways but not as much. It seems to be a quirk of society when they see an injustice they overcorrect and then that creates a reaction.. and hopefully, it comes to actual positive progress. I am not sure if we have gotten there yet with what happened a decade ago, maybe we're still in the overcorrection phase? Maybe we won't get to real progress.. CRT is pretty much in the same phenomenon. I also am reminded of the controversy of Common Core.. which is actually based on sound principles of how people learn. Parents and teachers who were taught the old way of doing math had trouble with it, they were lost, it is like how rock and roll confused the old people back in the day. I'm sure ill get some strong reactions to all of this but I hope my point comes across. Anyway, this is just a few random thoughts from a random person on the internet.

Nothing is class neutral is it? The idea that values have color is wrong. The dominant ideology of a society are the ideas of the class that governs. The ruling class of that society. If the ruling class is of a certain ethnicity, religion or color then this plays in to it. But the laws and values and property relations in a class society arise from these material conditions. To not recognize this will always always lead to a dead end.

@@derrickbell24 Funny, I find it's the leftists that often don't know what CRT means. They often claim, "we just want the bad parts of history taught!" as if they aren't already... which is absurd. Nobody is claiming we shouldn't teach all of history. Malcolm Nance tried to do this on Bill Maher's show after agreeing to a very well-defined description of CRT by Ben Shapiro. I highly doubt proponents of CRT know the answers to your questions any better, to be frank. They think it's just "teaching history". It's a bait and switch they've bought. CRT is not a set of data primarily but a hermeneutic; an interpretive framework through which to understand everything else. And that's precisely the problem right off the bat. It's the assumption of bias *on purpose*. It's a rejection of objectivity even as a goal, let alone a possibility. Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic were main progenitors, along with the REAL Derrick Bell (who famously disliked the Brown v Board ruling which I assume you're alluding to). It contains an inherently activist dimension. It teaches that racism is not aberrational but ordinary; that it is normal science, the way society does business. That it is difficult to cure or address, and that the ordinary-ness of racism serves important material purposes for white people. It teaches that merely fighting for equal treatment only solves obvious forms of racism. Then strangely it also teaches that races are mere products of social construction. Which seems completely counterproductive to the enterprise. One of the primary tenets is the Voice of Color Thesis, that the "oppressed" races have special insight that "oppressor" races don't have. Hence it's really Marxist in philosophy. With a dollop of racism on top. It's Racial Essentialism. So no, I reject it front center and backwards. But conventions that represent a reality. But this kind of proves my point. The absurdity of CRT is in that contradiction. "race isn't objectively real, but here's how important it is". It rejects the notion of equal treatment as insufficient to justice. That's why Derrick Bell disliked the Brown decision. It doesn't matter if they're MOTIVATED by racism. "Theory" and "hypothesis" are essentially synonyms in this context. It just means an explanatory framework that posits stable relations between particular facts. Calling something a "theory" does not mean it is proven in any sense, nor that is even good for anything. There are innumerable useless and terrible theories. Critical race theory is a combination of theory and political movement, and the theory part is mostly untestable nonsense. Relativism always turns to dogmatism. When there is no truth, no knowledge, and no rationality, then politics and power are the only means by which your preferred ideas can win. When everything is reduced to propaganda, you might as well play to win. When racism is inevitable, you just need to racist better than the other guy. In this view, the best way to defeat Sauron is to use the power of the one ring against him, because otherwise he will use it against you. However, the ring only has one master, and the CRT crowd are meddling in magics they cannot ultimately control.

@@bwhere45 They're not being intentionally misleading. The word "theory" is just used much more broadly in academic literature. The idea that a theory is somehow more proven than a hypothesis is mostly just a layman misunderstanding. While CRT types engage in all manner of verbal misdirection and trickery, this really isn't one of these cases.

@@bwhere45 The "critical" in critical theory refers to the procedure of deconstructing social institutions, traditions, and concepts. The purpose is to expose the underlying power dynamics and undermine them, because the theory is that such power dynamics are the primary mode of explanation in sociological matters. In this view, the evolution of social institutions is essentially untethered from any reality apart from the social reality we create, and so the potential for that social reality to be deconstructed and reconstructed is near limitless.

@@bwhere45 My point is that they're not using the word "theory" in any kind of novel or misleading way. It's just an academic word that is often used differently by laymen. Even in the philosophy of science, the word "theory" implies no epistemological status such as being proven or supported, and many good and bad theories are recognized as falling outside of the realm of science. If anything, the use of the word "critical" is more misleading than "theory", since they're not being critical in some general sense, but rather they're actively pursuing a particular agenda. A more accurate phrasing would be something like "revolutionary deconstruction theory". Bit of a mouthful though.

In short, it's a silly racist conspiracy theory. And you may use a different definition of racism that includes power, but I don't. If people rejected the interpretation that say, all Jews are actually from the planet Pluto and are here on Earth in a vast conspiracy to steal our aluminum foil, they wouldn't have to be rejecting it because it's a theory or because it's about race. @@barryon8706 i understand where you're coming from. but how/in what way does CRT tell people to treat others based on race? i myself think it is possible for people to talk about race and not be actual racists. you mentioned culture being a reason why black people are not as successful [in life]. even though i don't entirely agree with that----i don't think you're a racist for making that comment. why would i even think that? when it comes to race/racism people want to keep the dialogue confined to a certain arena. you see it all the time in politics. so even though i cannot say i agree 100% with CRT---i do think it touches on elements/ideas about racism (some of which i think are true---from a historical standpoint) that people are uncomfortable (perhaps fearful) talking about.
@barryon8706

@@chinchukwu9174 According to the ABA: "Rejection of popular understandings about racism, such as arguments that confine racism to a few “bad apples.” CRT recognizes that racism is codified in law, embedded in structures, and woven into public policy. CRT rejects claims of meritocracy or “colorblindness.” CRT recognizes that it is the systemic nature of racism that bears primary responsibility for reproducing racial inequality." I think it's possible for people to talk about race and not be racists as well, and I haven't heard anybody say otherwise. I have heard people say that the focus on race is doing more ill than good, but that's a different argument. I have heard people claim that it is racist to blame culture, but I've more seen arguments from the left saying that it's just how Whites comfort themselves. However, if systemic inequalities are caused by systemic racism, then why does America systemically oppress White people who, after all, do not do as well as Asians or Jews? If systemic racism must be responsible only for some systemic inequalities, why those? Every attempt I've seen to justify that has never started with moral principles and applied them they have always bent this way and that to target the group that people wanted to target, and adapted moral principles to fit. And then White people are taught to confront White privilege, are they not? Is anyone else taught to confront their privilege? And if affirmative actions is not a form of privilege, why not? Now, I just want to re-iterate that objections to CRT are not about it digging, not that it is a theory, and not that it is about race. I've never seen an objection to actually gathering data about race, or about theories, and I've seen very little pushback against any talk about race. People are not resistant to teaching about slavery, Jim Crow, blockbusting, redlining, etc., even though it makes them uncomfortable, either. Those are part of history. Please object to CRT because it interprets systemic inequality to a conspiracy that is somehow systemic and yet so hidden that even the participants don't know they're in on it, and CRT teaches people to judge each other by race.
