They whooped them by 20, ain't no upset if you win by double digits. Clearly Virginia was done in this tournament when they lost their best player and would have likely lost to the majority of the field. UMBC over UVA is the greatest upset in the history of the NCAA tournament. But - the biggest upset in the history of sport is and always will be the Miracle on Ice. A hodgepodge of college kids and amateurs taking down the greatest hockey team ever assembled, with the political backdrop of the Cold War? Nope, there will never be a bigger upset than that.

I can't tell if Colin is respecting or disrespecting my alma mater. On the one hand he is diminishing the greatest sports accomplishment the school has ever made (outside of chess, lacrosse, and cyber security competitions but no one cares about those nationally anyway.) But on the other hand, he is saying that UMBC was never that much worse than the ACC champions anyway.

I think the Villanova 85 title game win over defending champion Georgetown is still the greatest upset in NCAA men's basketball history. UMBC definitely made history and it will always be remembered, but they immediately lost their next game. I'm valuing a championship win (Nova 85) over a first round win, even though the seedings are like 8 spots apart. But this is somewhat subjective

It took Cowherd just one minute to completely embarrass himself here. Chaminade was playing competitively with Division I schools during that era of the '80s, so the rest of those characteristics about the school obviously didn't matter much. And the "miracle on ice" involved an American team that was only a 5 to 1 underdog. You'd think someone referring to the other odds so much would know that (especially before declaring it clearly the biggest upset ever

Two things happened in this game. UMBC had their best game all year and Virginia had its worst. We were without Hunter and a wounded Wilkins. Hunter was by far our best player and Wilkins our best defender. He had been battling mono and just was never right again. It was the perfect storm for the upset. I imagine had both of them played at full strength we would be looking at a similar result to the Gardner Webb game. The best thing is no one cares because we won a National Championship the next year and by losing to UMBC we go from one of the worst losses of all time to one of the greatest comebacks. That's how you completely erase that loss.
