I've never seen this version of "The Turning of the Screw", and I LOVE Colin Firth, so I'm a bit mad at myself for being so woefully behind the times!! (I LOVED him as Mark Darcy in the "Bridget Jones Diary" movies...hell, I loved him in "Nanny McPhee"! LOL) This will be the 5th version of this story that I've seen, but I never get tired of it! I'm only sorry that CF is only going to be in this for a few minutes. (According to the other comments that I've read on here.) Thanks for uploading!

The original version of _The Turn of he Screw_ has people who are stranded at a hotel during the holiday, telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve (an English tradition), and the narrator is a man who learned the story years ago from his younger sister's governess. The woman was relating an experience that she had with her first teaching job, that turned out badly for the children involved. The narrator tells his audience that the woman who wrote out the story for him was older than he, and that she is now dead. There is a hint that he was in love with her. He is referred to, throughout the story, by his last name which I remember as having been "Duncan," or maybe "Douglas," but it occurred to me after a time that "Duncan's" first name may have been "Miles," and this may have been a cautionary tale by which his sister's governess let him know that if he and the woman ever surrendered to their attraction to one another, it would have driven both the little sister and Miles insane, and ruined all three of their lives forever. It's a rattling good ghost story, but it also makes a pretty good psychological allegory.

I think in part Henry James was trying to criticise how ridiculous the premise of Jane Eyre is by making a small reference to it in Turn of the Screw.
