The biggest and most important industry in new york isnt finance, media, publishing etc, its office workers. Without office workers, commercial real estate goes bust, the public transport system goes bust, shops and restaurants go bust, residential property goes bust. It will be well over a year before companies in NYC can even think of going back to the office en masse, and by that time people will have moved away, gotten accustomed to WFH and not commuting, and the kinks will have been ironed out of WFH, and this is more true the longer things go on, so there's a real possibility that things will never go back to how they were before in terms of office workers.
@bmlong1374 жыл бұрын
Office work isn't coming back 100%. There will need to be a massive collapse in prices, followed by a transformation, and then it will rebound as a very residential/retail/restaurant driven city. The transformation will be the enlarging of individual apartment residential space (to support WFH) and conversions from office space to residential and retail, including restaurants. I give it 5-10 years.

The main problem with de Blasio is that he tries to be everything and doesn't satisfy anyone. He is part of the corporate democratic machine but tries to be woke to satisfy that crowd, then tries to be progressive to satisfy that other proud. He just can't do it, he's a mess But still, it was worse in the 80s. They're just idealizing the past.

@yashar-el4 жыл бұрын
@ Yeah, we all want to go back to the city that was swarmed with criminals, drug dealers, murderers, rapists, when it was impossible to walk down the street safely in the evening, let alone ride the graffiti subway. Seriously, it was so awesome to get stabbed and robbed, etc. All I see now is well dressed, successful young and not-so-young people working well-established jobs, doing their thing, not to mention a much better and updated infrastructure (though it's still nowhere near the level of Tokyo). But no, seriously, Gay Pride and Basquiat gave the world so much happiness and prosperity that I can now truly attest we live in a much better world. We're all so happy and united. If it wasn't for Mapplethorpe, new wave disco freak shows, and porn theaters, we as a Western Civilization of New York City, would've collapsed.

@@savannahp6359 listening problems or just a difference of opinion of what was being discussed. They were talking on how Giuliani cleaned things up, switched to talking about Bloomberg and could he be re-elected and then at about the 6:20 mark Joe says someone like Bloomberg needs to clean NY up. If you want to dance in the gray area of Joe saying "someone" and not naming anyone, by all means, have at it. Seeing as how they were discussing if Bloomberg could be mayor again, id say reason lends to the idea that they think Bloomberg, if elected again, would be able to clean things up. Thus my initial comment. Of which, I stand by. I dont think Bloomberg could clean it up and honestly given the political climate, I dont know that anyone can. I think NYC collapses in on itself socially and economically, much like Detroit has.
@gibsonflyingv28204 жыл бұрын
Oh really? Interesting because under Bloomberg we had the lowest crime rate in NYC. He was so beloved he got a third term, the only nyc mayor in history to hold that title, Rudy couldn’t pull that off and he was mayor during 911. Your bias is quite evident, just because Fox News told you Bloomberg was bad doesent mean they know shit, I’ve lived in NYC since the 68 and believe me we have yet to have a better mayor than Bloomberg, he was a great man and made the city a paradise. I agree deblasio is awful though.
