There is a wonderful video of Colin Walsh playing the Dambusters March on the organ of Lincoln Cathedral, accompanied by video footage of a Lancaster bomber flying directly over the Cathedral with that very moving sound of her four Merlin engines. What a wonderful performance on that but in particular tonight's programme. Thank you so much.

Just such a consummate performer as any of us who heard him regularly in Lincoln Cathedral before the plague. His improvisations were wonderful, no doubt due to the influence of his teacher Langlais and the like. I particular remember an improvisation in three parts during communion which would have been to the credit of any baroque or classical composer in the art of counterpoint. His more boisterous improvisations lifted the spirit. What a loss to Lincoln now he has retired.

It is difficult to find the right superlatives to describe Colin's playing, the music, the editing, the new organ, and the wonderful "on the bench" moments at the end.....both planned, and out-takes. It was an absolute joy from the first note to the final chuckle!! It was also heartwarming to see the elation on Richard's face when Colin responded to the question "What do you think of the organ?" Well done, Richard, for having such an amazing vision, and for sharing it with us.

What a wonderful performance by Colin, who makes it all seem effortless. I think that this may have been the best rendition of the Franck piece that I have ever heard. He had the perfect organ, and he used the perfect registrations and perfect tempo for that organ and 'space.' It's great to hear someone let the reverberations bounce around a bit before attacking the next phrase. To me, that shows he wants the listener to enjoy the fullest impact of that piece. Bravo to you both.

Love Colin's Playing I first came into contact with the Vierne in 1983 when I was turning pages for Martin Singleton at Chester Cathedral. I was so awe struck by the double pedalling bit at the beginning to say I was green with envy that he could play such a piece and not me was an understatement. Well it went on my bucket list and after buying my first practice organ learnt the piece end to end a couple of years later. Must re look at although at 64 and a bit out of practice could be a big challenge. Once spent several hours in Lincoln Cathedral when Colin and the music staff played the whole of Bach's organ works in an Organathon. As tonight, Colin's playing was superb.

Thank you so much Colin. It has been a real joy to experience true musicality on the organ, Colin, bringing to life some of the musical ideas of my favourite composers. Very impressive precision in your pedalwork. Everything so deliciously phrased and timed. Perfect choices of registration. Loved that you made the Bach dance and gave each section it's own life. Yes - would love to hear you playing again. The Bach Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C Major BWV 564 would be my choice - my second favourite Bach piece after BWV 540. Another choice would be anything from Vierne's 24 pieces in free style. Thanks.

A Fantastic recital, thank you so much Colin and thanks to Richard for making it happen. Colin is clearly a true gentleman and a very modest one at that! From a former organ builders perspective, My old boss used to tune Lincoln Cathedral for Harrison’s many years ago and it was one of his favourite organs. Re: Richard’s question: Willis or Cavaille-Coll, having worked on and tuned examples from both organ builders, I’d personally have to go with Willis.... from an engineering perspective Willis’s best instruments were far more refined both in mechanisms and pipework right down to Willis’s beautifully engineered reeds with their turned brass reed loading, actions and playing aids etc. I found Cavaille-Coll frankly more ‘agricultural’ to work on though still amazing works of art in their own right. It’s all a matter of personal taste, which is what music is all about, bravo!

Thoroughly enjoyed this throughout. “Fabulous” Colin delivered in every respect and what a warm and engaging character. @Richard, it also has to be said that your hosting, style and production of this series becomes more relaxed and fine-tuned as your experience deepens. Wonderful playing and sound. But I must ask, why does this magnificent console only have two swell pedals? And is one of them a Crescendo?
@beautyinsound2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Why would I need more than two swell pedals? Two is plenty. Crescendo pedals are very uncommon here in the UK and we prefer to use thumb pistons and hand registrations to control our dynamics. How many pedals are you used to?
@bertspeggly44282 жыл бұрын
@@beautyinsound I have a Klann (American) console, much smaller than yours, 3-manual, 6 generals, 4 divisionals, and it has 3 swell pedals, (Swell, Choir, and Echo (floating)) and a Crescendo pedal. I'm sure you are correct, it's probably completely over the top. I am no organist, I just enjoyed putting the organ together. I used Grandorgue (and Hauptwerk 2 for a while.) Your organ sounds and looks spectacular.
