This is an excellent presentation. Progress is made in small steps and it brings the student of the game along nicely, with understanding.

Nicely explained, even though it was a bit faster presentation than previous lessons. Everything with responding to an overcall seems to be quite logical. Responding to an overcall bid progresses in natural order... once you know all the material from previous lessons by heart.

Hi Ms Stearns! I have recently discovered your channel and enjoying it tremendously! Very helpful for me as a starting bridge player. What is the exact difference between an overcall and a normal competitive bid? I would appreciate it if you can explain. We play American version. Thanks, Sanjeev
@janestearns99366 жыл бұрын
The big difference in the Acol system which we teach in New Zealand, is that all opening bids promise 4 cards whereas all overcalls promise 5 cards. Also opening points need to be 12, whereas if you overcall you can have a little less. Good Luck with learning the game.

Well presented again, And did you spot a deliberate mistake? I notice that the hand at 11:30 IS balanced (although it makes no difference to the recommended action)
@janestearns99364 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that feedback Paul. Yes, you are quite correct, it is balanced with a 5 card major. We teach beginners in NZ that you don't use 1NT with a 5 card major (but do with a 5 card minor) - so this weakness takeout bid is reinforcing that premise.
@phillipburley96753 жыл бұрын
On the response hand at 12 minutes 14 seconds, my choice (certainly at duplicate) would be just to bid 3NT.

Hi Jane Response to Overcall 1NT Unbalanced hand Question : What if you have 0 - 7 points and you DO NOT have 5 card suit, and likewishe if you have 8+ points and you do not have 5 or 6 card suit What is the response then please ??

Hi Louise, I'm sorry I missed this one! The 0-7 question - you pass and pray!! 8-10 - pass and less praying needed :)

Opponent opening 1 spade. You have a 18 points balanced hand with zero high card points in spade.u can double it.or cue bid.
@janestearns99364 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bikash - as this is a very basic beginner lesson we don't go into cue bids at all. The X would be the approach for beginners but you are quite correct, there are other methods as you progress in the game. Happy bridging!

The bidding taught is applicable to both forms of the game. It is the tactics that change but these are not taught in this beginner series. You would probably be best to discuss your question around adding points for length with your local bridge teacher to gain an understanding of when and how that might apply. Good Luck with learning the game Farrukh.

how many points are required to change overcaller's suit on the 2 level ?
@janestearns99365 жыл бұрын
You will need around opening points and a good suit of your own. If your partner has bid their overcall at the one level - they may have low points so you need a good hand to switch suits. If your partner has overcalled at the 2 level - they have 10 plus points, so if you really hate their suit and have a better option it is easier to switch the suit then.
@bikashsinha53704 жыл бұрын
@@janestearns9936 you must need a five card suit with minimum opening points. M I right
@janestearns99362 жыл бұрын
@@bikashsinha5370 Yes, you are still making an overcall yourself so need a 5 card suit.

hi brillant videos. what does "rag" mwan
@janestearns99366 жыл бұрын
Any card that is not an honour card. So the Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten are honours. Rags are small cards 2 to 9 typically (although 9s and even 8s can be quite valuable at times!)
@paulhadlington81796 жыл бұрын
(And for the record a "RAG" refers any non Honour cards (9 and under)

disagree with many issues discussed, i.e. a one no trump overcall can be treated by partner as an opener so stayman and transfers are in play
@janestearns99365 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the trouble to respond. The lesson here is part of a very basic beginners course for New Zealand students. In NZ the higher point count on the 1NT overcall is taught. I agree once further down the track other methods are introduced, however in NZ neither Stayman nor transfers are taught at all at the beginner level course. As always, checking with partner what system is used and what agreement is reached is always important. Understanding that different players and different countries have different systems and being tolerant of differences and reaching agreements on systems is an important part for new partnerships.

No - we don't teach either of those in our beginners course in NZ. We do in our improvers and intermediate materials. If you go to www.nzbridge.co.nz and look at the Education tab - these are topics that we include there.
