Collagraph using an old milk carton - 'A Suffolk Barn' .. (how dairyng!)

I love making collagraphs, and they can be made from almost anything.
In response to a subscribers question - In this video I make a collagraph using an old milk carton.
I often find packaging makes for really great collagraph prints as the textures they provide result in different printing outcomes that are always unique!

If you are looking for a new technique to try during your next art project, consider these two techniques that I love: collagraphs and viscosity printing. A collagraph is made by using soft materials like oil pastels or pencil-shavings as the printmaking medium where they then go through an open press process. Viscosity prints on paper can be achieved in many ways but one of my favorites involves coating the entire surface with liquid glue before placing ink onto it!

Eu vejo que muitos canais de arte estão mostrando essa técnica, mas, se o artista tem condições de ter uma prensa dessas, com certeza já produz ilustrações muito melhores do que essas (a partir de velhas caixas de leite). Em todos os vídeos que vi, há um desperdício enorme de tinta e tempo limpando quando poderia fazer o mesmo trabalho apenas cobrindo os traços com um cotonete molhado na tinta. De qualquer forma, sou grato por seu vídeo.

Oh, that’s wonderful. Thanks for the inspiration. I have been playing around with tetrapak myself but am trying some collagraph techniques on it for the first time and wondering how fo wipe the ink without wiping away the tape pieces. More delicate I suppose than just etching and mark making.

A great print. I did a workshop, years ago now, participants had to use all sorts of materials as the plate and we ended up with some amazing prints. Great, tetrapak is great fun! I use a dry point needle and scalpel knife, I use intaglio ink and a printing press

You are very welcome! I use Polymetaal HS-35 Tabletop Etching Press and it’s absolutely brilliant, highly recommend it.

@@CollagraphPrinting Inspired, I tried this myself today Marta. Don't have a press but used lots of force with a spoon. Really disappointing results! Smaller plate than yours but similar subject matter. Blacks didn't take at all. Line work was poor. Thought I hadn't scored the surface deeply enough so tried again but still rubbish. I'm new to printing but did soak the paper then blotted, loosened the ink a bit too as its very stiff but is inatglio ink. Think I'm using more than enough pressure with the spoon. Don't think I'm overwiping, ink in the lines still visible on the plate. Any ideas?

@@esarempee oh no sorry to hear that. I think probably spoon might not work as well. Try rolling pin. If you don’t have a press dry pointing will work better with Perspex sheet. Have you seen my dry point video? It’s the one with daffodils.

I was wondering, when do you use shellac? I thought that you might use it after you applied the gesso etc, and everything was done, but then you didn't. So that made me wonder when do you finish with shellac over everything and when not.

Whenever to use shellac or not entirely depends on how many prints do you want to get out of your plate. If you only want a small amount then you don’t have to shellac at all. I used to shellac my plates but these days I don’t as I find I don’t do many prints from the plat and move on to something new. I’m fact, varnishing may cause obscuring some of the fine details, which is a shame.
