Dan I walked a mile out to the perfect spot I’ve been hoping to hunt for over a year and as soon as I got set up I pulled my bow back and the string completely snapped so I walked a mile back and drove home. I was committed to quitting and only gun hunting for the rest of my life, but I am now on my way to an archery shop to get it re-strung because I’m going to get a deer next weekend. Keep at it

“Don’t hunt hard, hunt smart” another one of my mantras. The inclination to “get out there” because the season is open isn’t as strong at my age as I burn out much quicker than I used to. I’m quite content to use the local morning news and reports of the steady increase in deer car collisions and the local hunting forums with their hero pics to determine when the rut is warming up for my area. Just like the bucks I’ll be hunting, I’m ready to rock right now but no sense in burning out stands and burning up hunting mojo until the right signs show start to show up.

Believe it or not the more you use the range finder the less you will need it. It becomes natural your mind will " just know" what yardage you are looking at. It strengthens your judgement skills. Good luck with the rest of your season!

Hi Dan, thanks for showing all your real hunts as they are. Just subscribed, though I've been watching you and The Hunting Public pretty heavily since last year - you're all very gifted hunters and teachers. Been gun-hunting for 5 years, blessed so far with meat in the freezer every year. Last year I started bow hunting and didn't get a real opportunity but had such a good time. This year I missed on 2 really good opportunities (1 nice doe, 1 smaller buck, ground hunts, thankfully complete misses) and now I've lost confidence with the bow for the remainder of this year. My practicing in summer was actually very good but wow I really blew it when it matters. Although I'm discouraged, I've taken note of some lessons learned anyways and this video definitely gives me hope -- bc if the master himself has a bit of a rough go, then a beginner like me shouldn't worry so much hah so THANK YOU!

Leaving portable stands up and putting salt blocks on the ground that looks like rocks...why must hunters insist on cheating? Thanks for following the rules on wearing orange during the youth hunt. Even though I don't agree with the rule, it's great to see hunters that do follow the rules!

@UtUbBaNsME FuqOff certainly not my intention. Know your hunting grounds and who hunts it. Certainly your own private land you should not have to wear orange while bow hunting! And did you read Dan's comment? I was agreeing with what he said.

Dan, my whitetail curse started last year too. Whiffed 3 times. I made a pact with myself of “if it’s brown, it’s down” this year to get the skunk out. So I get three chances at three yearling does, and couldn’t bring myself to shoot them. It’s early still, but that fat girl needs a date soon, and if I’m that guy dragging a doe the size of a German Shepherd out of the woods next weekend, I’ll consider it a sacrificial offering to break the curse.

only about 2 minutes in, but the public spot I hunt gets a LOT of heavy foot/hiking traffic, horses, bikers.......all year. The deer just stop caring...most of the deer trails run parallel to the human hiking trails, and Ive had deer on one side of me (20-30 yards) and two guys talking while hiking on the other side, about 100 yards away. the deer tend to not care, and know exactly where the human trails are. they can pick someone off coming into a spot, so sneaking in early is a must. Its just the nature of hunting public land.....enjoy it.

If your rangefinder has an automatic declination correction for steep angle, you and your rangefinder are both correct! At steep angles, the rangefinder only tells you the "shoot as" yardage. Could actually be 30 yards away but since steep angle, the arrow shoot be shot " as if" distance was only 25 yards.

Not to be a pain, but baiting deer isn't illegal in WI. While it is in certain counties, yes, but some counties still allow it. If you're going to bait, please just abide by the regulations.... OK, I'm off my soapbox. Shoot Straight!
@Bubakarrr3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is in public lands like where the salt lick was
@hrs4me303 жыл бұрын
@@Bubakarrr That is also an incorrect statement. You can bait on some public parcels. I believe Dan hunts in S.Central WI, and if you read the regulations it would be in fact illegal in that area. While I don't bait personally, I just want it to be clear that there is factual information out there. (he had a Caption in his video that "it is illegal in WI to bait for deer"). It's not illegal statewide. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/hunt/bait.html See attached Map of where Baiting is legal in certain counties and others where it is prohibited. Regardless of Private/Public. I'm not trying to be an Ass*ole or a Keyboard Attorney, just want people to play by the rules.

That "salt block" is a Trophy Rock. Technically probably not considered bait as it is a 100% natural rock.
@fishlovme3 жыл бұрын
Anything not natural to the ground is not allowed in Wisconsin in areas of CWD. The only thing legal in CWD areas are food plots. I had a friend of mine busted for using a salt mineral block. Big fine! They are legal in most of northern wisconsin but not the rest of the state where there is CWD. And we can use hunting blinds but they have to be removed at the end of the day. That rule applies to public land only, however any baiting whatsoever is illegal. Some scents would be considered illegal too.
@fishlovme3 жыл бұрын
When you say 100 percent natural do you mean that it was there naturally? It might be a natural product but if someone placed it there it's illegal. We're not even allowed to move dead apples on the ground to a pile but if they fall there naturally we can leave them there. So yes, unless that salt rock was there naturally, placed by the glaciers that went thru 10,000 or so years ago it was not legal being there. Sounds crazy, I know, but rules are rules.
