Hello Mike. I'm from Brazil. I've always felt that the Tec Toy versions skimped on game materials in terms of quality. The manuals they saw in game boxes, for example, always came with low quality paper, among other things.

Ah I'm really glad you're covering some of the Brazilian games Mike! They caught my eye four or five years back when I discovered Tectoy were selling (with some significant degree of success) Master Systems and Mega Drives for the equivalent of about £29 and £40 respectively. I know Tectoy published a handful of games for both systems during the mid-nineties though I've never been sure as to whether they were classed as licensed or were semi-unofficial. I've only played through one: the Woody Woodpecker game Férias Frustradas do Pica-Pau. It was pretty dodgy if I'm honest, but it hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for discovering more! 😀

Though Brazilian PALM at 60Hz is so close to NTSC (59.94Hz) that calling it PAL as true European 50Hz is s bit misleading - usually the ROMs in Tec Toy games are exactly the same as the Genesis games, only a few of them had some localization, but they're the same as the Genesis games.
@RetroGamerBoy2 жыл бұрын
I thought Brazil were PAL M which shares some similarities with NTSC. I'm not an expert so probably the last person to ask 😅
@JogosMofados2 жыл бұрын
@@RetroGamerBoy Yes, PALM is very close to NTSC, just some differences taken from European PAL to make it 60Hz (NTSC is 59.94Hz) - which is why I said calling Brazilian Megadrive games "PAL" misleading, as people would assume games running at 50Hz, which is true PAL (and not a great experience).
@danielbirchal2 жыл бұрын
Mike, there's an important detail: technically Brazilian games are not PAL. They're NTSC. That's because the Brazilian PAL-M standard is 60hz and it's not compatible with any other PAL system nor NTSC. Brazilian Mega Drive even have the same region code of the USA Genesis and if not all at least most ROM versions included on Brazilian releases back in the day uses the USA ROM version.

I lived in Brazil for 25 years. Things over there are pretty much expensive, to the point that it even became somehow "part of the culture". I follow some Brazilian retrogaming channels and well know that being a retrogamer there can litteraly leave you skint. It's a quite expensive hobby; much more than here in EU. I've seen brazilian Ebay sellers selling Tec Toy SMS games here in EU for €200 or even more, the same games that we'd pay between €20-€25 (for EU versions). It really seems there an attempt to bring those infamous brazilian prices over here just because things over there can cost our eyeballs. Absolutely ludicrous.

@@RetroGamerBoy The eBay prices for Brazillian games are scammers for sure. I do live in Brazil and while prices are pretty high they're no THAT high. @@danielbirchal It's really out of this world....Just for instance, a PS5 in Brazil costs nearly 5 minimal wages ( in Reais, the brazilian currency) whilst here in EU it cost half minimal wage (in Euros). Hight taxes in Brazil play a massive role on prices...
@danielbirchal2 жыл бұрын
@@videogamemusicrenditionsby7625 Well, I was referring to the retro game market. Current gen game market is a very different beast. It's true that the PS5 console it's much more expensive than in other countries but in the other hand physical PS5 games and accessories are MUCH cheaper in Brazil than in other countries. Usually even much cheaper than the USA. Minimal wage just isn't a good parameter to compare since the price of the components vary according a global market while minimal wage vary according local economic conditions. But at least Brazilian economy showed some big improvements over the last years and things are slowly getting better.
@videogamemusicrenditionsby76252 жыл бұрын
@@danielbirchal It's indeed true what you said abou the price of components. But the thing is that using the minimal wage as reference is also a way to measure purchaising power. In Brazil, the minimal wage is currently R$1212 and a physical copy of a PS5 game can cost between R$150 and R$380. That means 12% or 31% of the salary. On the other hand, here in EU (in the country I live) the minimal wage is around €1500 and the same physical games would cost only €39 and €49. That represents just 2.6% and 3.2% of the salary. Using the minimal wage as reference is important because we can see the quantity of goods and services one can buy with a wage unit (it's impossible to know the personal income of each person).
