If you want a strong health peach tree, you need a disease resist root stock. If you want to learn how to get some for free, just watch and learn.

Peach cutting for rooting is the hardest to do; about 2-5 percent success rate, if you are lucky. Plums, apple, pears etc... are easier to root. But you are better off grafting them onto a rootstock or air layering to get a perfect clone. Like gentleman said, either they dry up or grow mold and then, infested with insect.

Sucker coming off the root stock you can just clip it off about 6 inches high.Then mound it over with sawdust or something. Next spring you can dig down into the sawdust and those suckers will have roots. Snip them off below the rooted area then pot them. No dampening off or rotting as long as they still attached to the mother plant. OK ? Looking forward to your success.

Yes I do find a lot of my cuttings fail to root rot , I find it very hard not to water lol , compost is mostly my medium or sand , for cuttings , I will try your medium mix suggestions , fingers crossed. 👍

My results were very poor with this batch of cutting. They got infested by fungal knats, and only a few overcame the infestation. Those few died from my neglect to watch their watering schedule, but one from that bunch did survive. I hope you will be successful with your batch.

Use the pro mix BX. No gnats and incredible results with the fungi addition. Game changer for me. @@gardeningsimplified

What strenth of rooting hormone are you using? Fruit trees are pretty hard to do, I am currently using Homex # 8

One trick is to plant a peach tree way too deep and at an angle. You’ll get dozens of suckers/rootstocks each year that you can graft into

Do cuttings from a grafted tree retain any of the rootstock characteristics?
@gardeningsimplified
@gardeningsimplified 2 жыл бұрын
No. You have to collect your cutting from a sucker that comes out below the graft to make good root stock.
@patti6194
@patti6194 Жыл бұрын
@Page Petty, the only way that plants share characteristics is through sexual reproduction, ie. fruits and seeds. Vegetative reproduction is how you get a plant that is genetically identical to the parent. If you took a cutting from the top of a grafted tree and rooted it, it would have the exact characteristics of the parent, which usually includes things like a lack of resistance to root or crown rot. Rootstocks are chosen for their resistance to diseases that attack under the soil, like root rot, crown rot, nematodes, etc. Grafting is a process that has a certain percentage of failures at each step, which increases the cost of the final product. Commercial nurseries only do grafting when they must.

how are the cuttings doing, would this work if wanted to clone a peach tree that was unhealthy. could I make a healthy tree from its cuttings

I only have a few survive, do to a fungal gnat infestation. If your cuttings are not healthy, then you might have a problem.

@@urbanharvestdfw is the tree just young? Fruit trees don't bear until they are a certain age, which differs according to species. Other things that can affect fruit bearing are absence or lack of pollinators, diseases or cultural conditions that affect flowering, bud drop, fruit drop, masting, etc.

Would it be possible to buy some propagated rootstock from you? I'm in northern Indiana, and there is a peach tree in a yard next door due to be cut down. The owner agreed to allow me to take cuttings from it. Before I do, I'm trying to fine rootstock for them.

@patti6194
@patti6194 Жыл бұрын
You could try asking at any commercial nurseries around you. If you are unsuccessful, and really want to propagate that variety, you can always buy a tree that is grafted onto the rootstock you want, and graft your scions to the top stock. You will probably end up with a combo tree, but if your grafts take, you will then have time to get some rootstock and start a grafted tree from scratch, with only one variety on top.

That "butt crack" split on the main trunk is bad news, mister. Do a thinning cut on the weaker branch and cut your loss now or risk killing your tree when it grows up. Your call. Cheers~

do I need to use suckers or can I use any branch
@gardeningsimplified
@gardeningsimplified Жыл бұрын
It's really depends on what you're wanting to grow, and where the suckers comes from. If the sucker comes from below the graft you'll grow root stock. If you propagate a sucker from above the graft or a branch, you'll grow a clone of the same tree on its own root stock.

I'm sorry that you fill that you have to be so negative. I have shown many updates on the poor progress of these cuttings. This was shown on my garden updates videos. In hindsight it would have been better to make separate videos on the propagation updates, but this was early in my channels progression. There was about a 99% failure do to a fungal gnat infestation. My channels purpose in to educate, and in order to do that I had to show the bad with the good, so people can learn from my mistakes. If you had read the comments, you would have seen that I had replied to comments on the outcome.
