A wonderful story RJ and yes the silver plate would have been worthless to thieves but the lid they could have sold on probably for scrap. Kids nicking hubcaps in the past used to be quite a serious issue as I recall. The thought of you being handcuffed to a tree does conjure up some interesting mental images and goes to illustrate how policing has changed in a relatively short time. today you would have probably been pepper sprayed or even tasered and given a fine.

Sadly, there were some rather nasty bully boy coppers in the force then. I had a run in with one on a Saturday morning, doing my pocket money job cleaning buses and coaches out at City Coach Lines, Upminster, Essex. I was told by the driver to just back up his bus onto the fuel pump when I had finished cleaning it. We were regularly allowed to shunt buses in the yard, which was private property. Meanwhile, he went off to the cafe for his fry up breakfast. Along comes plod who tried to arrest me for taking and driving away the bus. Despite having already parked on the pump, nozzle in the tank and fuel being pumped, he had the cuffs out. The boss from the coach yard turned up and tore him off a right strip, and I was once again freed to go about my business. As it was on City Coaches property, he had no business there, but I guess I looked like an easy nick! Never trusted coppers since.

Amusing story, it would appear that the ' thievin' toe rags ' were actually experts in medieval silver and after seeing that the chalice lid was the only item hall-marked, and it ended up in the smelter of a dodgy scrap dealer and the silver-plated items dumped - trouble was everyone had become experts through seeing Arthur Negus on ' Going For A Song ' on telly !.
@oldclassiccarUK

Yes I'm sure that's what ended up to the lid, I still don't remember why I was attached to the nearby tree though

What a hoot! My childhood collecting was mainly around getting and filling in 'I Spy' books, which were educational. my pointless collecting of car and train numbers were less so. Yet as the Carlisle- Settle line ran below the farm I was really chuffed to be able to watch the several days of testing of the Yellow and Blue Deltic thundering across the Little Salkeld viaduct - but not able to see a number! I am sure Harley will not be lippy and thus avoid the indignity of handcuffing as he fills Ned and Fred the Sheds! A fun video! Thank you Rob

Ah yes I Spy books, I'm a big fan of those. It must have been neat having the railway line at the bottom of the garden/field, before we moved here we looked at a place the garden of which backed onto one of the runways at Manchester Airport, that would have been fun too

Love this one, when I was a kid back in the late 60's early 70's I knew where every abandoned car was for miles around was, I guess scrap wasn't worth much in those days so they ended up in the woods etc. There were miles of paths thru any waste ground where we would ride our bikes, build camps and so on. Thanks for the memories.

Hi Rick, that was brilliant ! I suspect we all have a school boy story or two in us, especially ones we wouldn't want to be revealed ! When my eldest started her police training at Cwmbran, one of the first things they were told was to NEVER handcuff a miscreant to an immovable object, something to do with 'yuman rights'. The solid silver chalice was probably hallmarked, the scallies would have known that. BTW, my late Aunt Mabel was born in Cheadle, she was known in the family as the 'Cheshire Cat@. Due to my grandparents itinerant lifestyle over 100 years ago they also had a 'Lancashire Hotpot', Yorkshire Pudding' Staffordshire Bulldog ' and a Wiltshire Moonraker. The four younger siblings, including Dad were all 'Somerset Cuckoos'. A very Happy New Year to you and yours Rick!

Happy New year to you and yours, Rick. A very good story reminiscent of Shakespeare,The Merchant of Venice. Another amusing connection is that before Christmas, I heard a spoof song, to the tune of Feliz Navidad, called The police nabbed my dad. Maybe you shouldn't show this comment to Harley.

I really enjoyed this. I may have an answer as to why F type Vauxhalls rot so badly. There was a shortage of steel when some of them were built and so Vaux used thinner imported steel. I remember my husband, who worked for Vaux, going up to one of our friends cars and jabbing his finger through the bonnet!.

A criminal! Known to the police? Shock horror! And I thought you were a respectable upright citizen. If it happened now, you would have had your DNA and finger prints put on file, and Interviewed at length. Hahaha. Great story and very amusing as well. Not too long ago, I was walking my dog in the countryside when I stopped on a bridge for a rest before attempting the hill to get back up the dell. As I looked over the parapet, I noticed several vehicle number plates in the brook. As they were all different, it raised my suspicions that they were something to do with the recent spate of local car thefts. As I had my cell phone with me, I phoned the local police station, who were totally disinterested and to report it to 111 or what ever number it was. I spent over half an hour quoting the numbers I could see, got told they would investigate and left it at that. No one arrived and so after another half hour, I gave up and went back home. I’m glad I did though as being handcuffed to a tree would have been awful 😂. Great video, thanks for the insight.

Ha I don't think I have a record :-) Now we'd probably just fill out a form describing the location with no on-site visit taking place at all. If you fish out the number plates, send them over!

A brilliant story Richard. How we spent our summer holidays back in the day! One thing is for sure, it was always sunny, never raining! Well in my memory it was but probably far from the truth. At least you did your duty as a good citizen and reported your find to the local police but handcuffing you to a tree was not a great reward for your efforts. I liked that you did get your 'mug shot' in the local paper and not on a police file. 😊 Harley is on the right track I am sure. 👍👍

Back in the day there was always people in the fields woods etc, farmers were always looking after animals and fixing hedges. Nowadays if a tree falls it's left to rot, we would have cut it up for firewood before the leaves even wilted 😂 I did alot of hunting then but the weather is so unpredictable now with very little frost so fields are muddy most of the winter, you'd be fed up walking in that 😢 People kept an eye on each other back then but now they're wrapped up in their phones. Look at harley, bewildered at why you'd even want to walk off road, that's gen z for you, they are in constant contact with "friends" they rarely meet on their phones and a map shows up on their phones plotting where everyone is live 🙄 Different world now, we had penknives and made bows and arrows and climbed trees and cobbled together bicycles using your foot for brakes😂

You teased us with this story earlier in 2023 and I was hoping you wouldn't forget to relate it. Amusing story and I wonder if Mrs OCC realises she could almost be considered as a 'gangster's moll!' Sadly, all I have ever seen in rivers is supermarket trolleys, old bikes and dead dogs! Harley looks the spitting image of you when you were a Youthful Assistant. What does he pin on his bedroom walls?!

Great story, and worth telling, the Police could/seem to get away with anything. Many a time I was told off for doing something the local Policeman didn't like and would say I know where you live and I know your Dad so behave or I go and a talk with him. ( most likely riding my bike on the pavement or climbing in some apple tree etc) this was in the mid fifties, a long time ago, still like climbing trees though!!! Cheers Bob

Fancy being handcuffed to a tree for your good deed Rick. I was a police officer for 32 years and I can say that I have never done that. I also collected hubcaps as a child and hung them on my bedroom wall. I left home and joined the Navy and when I came home on my first leave my Mum had given them all to a secondhand shop. What was she thinking???????
