The "salt lick" on the riverbank where butterflies are attracted to is because of uric salts from humans peeing on the same spot. This is one of the old classic methods of luring butterflies and day flying moths. That sock-like thing being spun around to attract male morphos is probably a pantyhose leg with a piece of aluminum foil inside. The best method is a cardboard cutout of a morpho with aluminum foil glued on and a light blue magic marker ink rubbed over the foil. Attach a short wood handle like a hand held mirror and occilate it rapidly back and forth to imitate the flashing of wings.

Great footage - especially the twirling the white cloth to lure the males down. Thanks for the show! :-)

The best collecting areas for morphos in Peru are around Satipo, Iquitos, Pucallpa, and Tingo Maria. Satipo is known especially for Dynastes sp. Hercules and rhinoceros beetles. Tingo Maria for Morpho helena (Tingo Maria can be dangerous because its along drug trade path). If you can get to Muzo Valley in Colombia that's a classic spot for Morpho Cyprus. Very dangerous area though because of the emerald mines, drugs and kidnapping.

Answer for Chris Gluck comment below: Because that's where they live. You just don't get it, do you.?

Imagine a giant keeping this guy in his hand and giving the same speech in front of a giant camera, shaking him the same way he is shaking the poor butterfly.

I'd certainly hope that all the people here crying foul at the lepidopterists for collecting butterflies are vegan.

why would you go so far to kill butterflies??
@combomatt40347 жыл бұрын
I don't like it.You are not catching butterflies, you are killing them.
@sethmueller96762 жыл бұрын
You have to catch them before you kill them. So technically they are doing both

2:30 - time stamp of them catching them

Comment for Mariposamallorca below: imposible.

Desgraciados.... Van a otro país a llevarse a los animales. Esas mariposas solo son para colección. Por ellos las especies se acaban
