Assuming it takes 1 minute to gather 100 wood and an item dropped takes 2/3 of a second to come back into the inventory, we want to optimize the amount of wood it'd require to a more accurate degree than just the number of stacks (e.g. 0.8 stacks vs 1.2 stacks) by using the equation y = (2/3)(1,000,000/(60x)) + x/100, where x is the amount of wood and y is the final time in minutes. This has a local min when x is about 1054, or a stack and 55 wood. Though obviously the "1 minute to gather 100 wood" is a bit broad and not very accurate. In fact, the local min of this function is larger than your final time, but my main point is just that a little more than one stack does seem to be the optimal amount of wood. If you rewrite this function as f(x,k) = (2/3)(1,000,000/(60x)) + x/k, where k is the amount of wood you can collect on average. Doing this gives us a partial derivative of 1/k - 1,000,000/(9x^2), and finding the local min of f(x,k) in the x-direction shows us that the optimal amount of wood is 1000sqrt(k)/3. Therefore the more wood you can collect on average, the more wood you should collect before dropping all the items against a wall. If you can get up to 150 wood per day, then the optimal amount of wood becomes about 1291, or a stack and 292 wood, so it can become quite significant.

Here is the math behind the graph shown, You can make an equation for t(the time taken to complete the run) in terms of T1(some constant time), T2(the time taken to get each stack) and x(the number of stacks gotten). (The time taken to pick up each stack is assumed to be 1) t=T1+10^6/(999x) + T2(x) dt/dx = -10^6/(999x^2) + T2 The time is minimum when dt/dx = 0, For dt/dx = 0, T2= 10^6/(999x^2) This is what is the graph shown in the video, with y=T2. Despite this, I think x as a function of T2 is more useful since it tells you the optimum stack size for each time. x(T2) = sqrt(10^6/(999T2)) You can confirm this is the same graph in the video as x(60)~4 which is what the chatter who sends the message says.

Wood has the advantage that it is the item you are picking up (as opposed to the bait that you can only pick up after purchase), so it could be not a bad idea to throw the wood you have at a tree, start chopping it (pick up the wood during this) and then repeat, you would already be working towards the goal using the down time of chopping for some extra pick ups, maybe?

what about fiber? get a sword in day 5, so free fiber no energy cost and clean all the farm + the woods then do the trick in the room, you should be capable of do it in less days than wood or worms so less cut scenes, i think its worth the try

You would use the scythe from day 1. Though there aren't enough weeds to get you the amount of fiber you would need

Might be something here. I got just shy of a stack (902) fiber on the beach farm sleeping till green rain and scything all day. Could def be optimized (1/ some weeding on day 1 2/ dont get lost on the beach farm like I did lol). couldn't figure out how to drop & pick up items fast but I'll keep futzing with it! :)

Seeing all the old stuff that got removed in the 1.6 update (and now the fish pond thing) makes me kind of sad. Don't get me wrong, it's CA's game he can patch and update and remove what he wants. But there we a lot of fun ways to make money that aren't there anymore (or are an easily forgotten option at the bottom of a list a lot of people never look at)
