People believe their currency has the worth it does because they have no other option. Even in a hyperinflationary environment, individuals must continue to use their hyperinflationary currency since they likely have minimal access to other currencies or gold/silver coins.

If you live overseas and collect SSDI, you are required to come back every 6 months, stay for a month, provide proof of stay to SSA.. wash, rinse, repeat every 6 months. I am 62, US expat living in the Philippines. I am going back to US in April and switching over to regular SS. My mailing address and bank account are in the US, so I have no idea how they would know I am overseas. NONE of these expat SSDI videos mention the 6 month rule.

They know you are overseas by way of your passport and customs and immigration! I'm trying to explain all of this to a guy in the Philippines but he doesn't believe me. He's been in the Philippines for 8 years, and is age 75 or older. Been there since 2016! He hasn't returned to the states in that time frame, and has not paid taxes to the IRS! That guy is never seeing the U.S. again unless he wants to go to jail for fraud and tax evasion!

If you are a person living abroad and under full retirement age (67 for most people these days), you will be restricted from working more than 40 hours per month if you receive SSI. If you exceed 40 hours in any month, your SS payments for that month will be $0. (Thank you, US Congress!) In addition, you must go through the US Embassy in the country where you live to communicate with the SS Administration. (You cannot get an online account with a foreign address. OK, you can get away with it if you already have one.)

I'm a US citizen receiving Social Security Disability and am permanently moving to Kenya. Will I continue to receive my payments? I can't find a definitive answer about this. Most sources say that my payments will stop the 7th month after I leave the country.
@HappyTrekkers11 ай бұрын
Yes, my understanding is that you are still eligible to receive your social security disability. Follow the link in the description to the website and follow the questions and answer section. It will tell you if you are eligible. But again I’m nearly 100% certain. As of my last research Kenya was not on any sort of restriction list.
@anonymousgirl7997 ай бұрын
@MAR-SHALL You have to come back to the USA after 6 months abroad, and stay for 30 days in America, before going back abroad, or Social Security will cut your money off. You have to file a special form, too. Country you move to must also have a US Embassy or US Consulate. I spoke with a representative today at Social Security.

I want to retire in Russia. I gleaned from the Social Security website that I cannot collect benefits if I become a resident of Russia, and definitely not if I become a Russian citizen. Is this all true? It’s hard to figure all this out. Thanks!
@HappyTrekkers21 күн бұрын
My understanding is you cannot collect it while there. What I do not know is if you could collect it in a US account and have the money sent to you. I get the impression that we do not have an agent that allows money sent between the two countries. You would definitely want to contact the social security administration and double or triple check to make sure you are 100% sure of what happens if you were to move. I’d be curious to learn what you find out.

That information about social security is incorrect. I hear that quite often but it is false. If we are talking about standard social security retirement or disability. Here is a video I did on that subject. As for your bank that would their rule only. It’s not a federal law. You could open a P.O. Box in the US or forward your mail to a relative to get around that. Also many people open an account with Charles Schwab because they do not charge fees for using an international ATM. Here is that video on collecting social security overseas kzbin.info/www/bejne/i165k5yjZ86SrZosi=cAwQoUwK-j-5YIi8

@@angNguyen-xn7rn hello. You may be able to live in Mexico. Mexico has two requirements for temporary residency. One is a monthly income requirement and the other is a total assets requirement. You have to meet only one of those. However they are making it more expensive each year. Right now the requirements are: Temporary Residency Monthly income of at least c.US$3,275 over the last 6 months (some consulates request 12 months); OR Savings/investments account balance(s) of at least c.US$54,600 over the last 12 months You can afford to live on social security but mexico is making it difficult to qualify.

@@DogbonesEddie This is correct. However, there is a gotcha. You are required to tell the SSA your address. If you don't or give them false information, they can make you pay them back. Just be careful. (If you do it this way be sure to keep filing your US Taxes because SSA and IRS communicate)

For the most part it does not cover you outside of the US. Most people find that the cost of healthcare in many countries is far less expensive than in the US and you can purchase foreign health insurance. I would encourage you to first watch the video for a more comprehensive understanding. Providing a simple "yes" or "no" would be inadequate and potentially misleading. The matter is complex, involving a range of factors such as individual circumstances and the specific country in question. It would be highly irresponsible to offer a blanket statement without considering these nuances.
