The Hadza are some of the very last hunter-gathers on earth and reside in north of present day Tanzania. They refer to themselves as Hazabe in their language Hazane, one of the few remaining click languages. The Hadzabe are striving to maintain their way of life despite the challenges as the modern world encroaches on their ancestral lands.
It was always a dream of mine to spend time with hunter-gathers, but that dream seemed impossible. But then I met Joel (‪@joelvbushcraft‬ ) on Season 7 of Alone. He grew up in Tanzania and has had connections with the Hadzabe since his youth.
Sometimes I would go out with Joel and the men on hunts and other adventures, but sometimes I stayed back and spent time with the women. I have read many anthropological works about hunter-gathers and the lives of women are often underrepresented, it was so special to get to take part in that which I could not find in any book.
In this video, I am accompanying the women on a daily water run. As this was my second year visiting this family I had gained the trust to be able to carry one of the women's babies. A real blessing.
The savannah were the Hadzabe live is a dry place for a good portion of year where water can be scare. The women have to travel to gather it daily from wherever it is available. This can be miles away where the women collect water from seep wells in dry river bottoms.

I've watched a lot of videos of the Hadzabe. But it's all been the men hunting. Glad to see this video of the women and the essential tasks that they do while caring for their little ones.

I experinced the same, lots of the men hunting but not much else. It made this experince that the more special and me all the more grateful for it.

So glad there are still traditional people on Earth. Traditional skills should be taught in our schools at a young age. Before we learn other things, we should be taught what it is to be human.

I love this so much. So peaceful to watch. What an amazing way to become more connected. Have they evolved more than we in the US have as far as being resistant to skin cancer? Apologies if this is a dumb question. I do see that they use fabric so I am sure that helps as far as sun protection in many ways.

Humans evolved out of Africa. Originally your ancestors would have had black skin resistant to skin cancer. As people spread out and travelled further North our black skin would have prevented us absorbing enough sunlight to create vitamin D. Lighter skin is an evolution adaptation that allowed us to live in areas of lower sunlight. Never dumb to be seeking to learn more about how we evolved.

From the information I could find, they have a fairly short life expectancy. 🙁 Skin cancer might not be a big issue.
