Women tend to be the keepers of their family’s history - they know all the old gossip, they understand the interconnected branches of the family tree, and they preserve the heirlooms.
We hear from these women a lot, especially as they start to downsize. They tell us all about their grandparents, parents, siblings, husbands, children, and grandchildren. But we don’t often hear about their own lives.
Alberta has a long history of women who have impacted the province, in big ways and small. The Famous Five. The members of Indian Rights for Indian Women. The politicians and the protestors. The athletes and the architects. There are extraordinary women, who were brave and challenged the status quo - but there are also ordinary women, whose lives were typical and relatable. And their stories are worth preserving, too.
In honour of Women’s History Month, let’s talk about how women’s history is captured and remembered.
