Collection of consumption-based tax lower after SST reimposition - Finance Ministry

Malaysia collected 18 per cent more taxes in four years under the GST regime, compared with the SST in five years.
From April 2015 to May 2018, GST collected RM184.8 billion, while SST collected RM150.4 billion from September 2018 to 2023.
The country’s total annual revenue collection is 51 per cent lower under SST.
SST covers 41 per cent of all goods and services sold in the market compared to 76 per cent under the GST.
The Ministry says SST is not the main cause of continuous price increases.
Instead, demand and supply, global commodity prices, prices of imported goods, and foreign currency exchange rates also affect the pricing of goods and services.
