Collections Databases 101 Webinar

This webinar was led by Amanda Lancaster, Curator of Collections at the Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository. In this session, Amanda delved into the fundamentals of collections databases and gave a deeper understanding of the Amutat database, a remarkable resource designed to facilitate connections with Alutiiq heritage artifacts.
Derived from the Alutiiq word for cod, "Amutat" conveys the significance of pulling together cultural "things." Serving as a centralized hub, this comprehensive database compiles items from diverse collections worldwide, enabling viewers to access and appreciate a wide range of Alutiiq objects. As the repository expands its efforts to locate and document ancestral items, the Amutat database continues to grow, enriching our understanding of Alutiiq history and culture.

Amanda Lancaster is a museum professional with 8 years of experience managing museum collections. She holds a masters’ degree in history from Texas Tech University, with a graduate certificate in Museum Studies. In 2017, she joined the staff at the Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak, AK, where she currently serves as the Curator of Collections. As a museum professional, her expertise is in collections management, NAGPRA/repatriation, museum policies, copyright & intellectual property, and facility management.
