Hey Trav, Just keep going bud. The first time I wanted to play college hockey I got the "you don't have a chance" talk too. I ended up having to leave that college because of financial reasons so not only did I not play hockey but I also couldn't get a degree. To make things worse I had to work as a janitor trying to save up money and my fiancee died of cancer when I was 21. Finally at 26 I saved up enough money to go back to college get a degree and cement my place as a back up goalie. I was literally nicknamed the Golden Oldie Goalie. I'm 5'8" and weigh 190lbs was a cleaner and was grieving. I taught myself not to be pathetic, everyday you just need to look for order in life. You can do this by working, training and keeping on top of things. Remember: The ONLY opinion that matters is what YOU think of yourself The outcome of any situation depends on how you choose to deal with it Don't ever fall in to the trap of feeling sorry for yourself Just remember in hard times that life can't be without suffering, if it were then happiness would lose it's meaning. Try, fail, go home and cry, and then tomorrow try again.

When I was in University, the head coach and I both knew that I had no legitimate chance at ever seeing a minute of action, but he never tore me down. He'd reinforce the work I was doing to get better and point out the positives. The end of season exit interview left me feeling like a million bucks; coach pointed out my progression that I hadn't even noticed. When I showed up a training camp the next year and I was clearly NOT in the condition required to participate, he told he to work out in the gym and improve my conditioning, but not in a destructive way. Criticism is necessary, but constructive is better than destructive. Someone who can only tear another person down is the weaker person in that interaction. Stay well and give 'em hell, Trav.

There’s a fun story about people having doubt. There’s a little boy in Vancouver, skilled player but major junior scouts refused to take him because he was “to little.” So he just played for his local junior teams. The leagues he played in at the time weren’t really seen as a place for good talent. He managed to get drafted, with a throw away 5th round pick, most seeing him as being a career AHL player. That boys name was Jamie Benn who is currently team captain and 4th all time in points, goals, and assist for Dallas.

The goalie coach who ran the camp told me a story about a kid who was repeatedly told he would never amount to anything in hockey (until he broke out at 18yo). As a goalie that probably had the gift to play in the NHL at one time, who flunked out of college (one where I was recruited by and played hockey for, and was likely to return the following semester as a starter), who later played Jr. B and was scouted by the Waterloo Blackhawks of the USHL that last year, but didn't go to Iowa to try out, I can tell you that if your body allows it, keep going. I was lazy and lacked any professional level training during my time, but I was still able to do really well. If I'd had more help, who knows?
