The college application process is already really intense for American students but it's probably 1000% harder for international students, specially the ones who are applying for any financial aid. @@jaap8270 You are right. We cannot apply for FAFSA because it is only for US citizens (and some special people too such as DACA and undocumented students,), so international students have to apply for the CSS profile, which allows us to get financial aid.

This is a really good and brave video . I know a lot of students get rejected to their dream schools but afraid to post up their experiences. This is a good reality check to many students out there to tell them they’re not alone(esp after seeing all the happy videos to those that did get accepted to their dream schools). Whatever you do and school you decide to go to , you’ll be more than fine. I can understand though wanting to go to a US university to experience that college life . I went to one of my state university nearby (mostly because it’s very affordable and I didn’t end up with any debt after graduating). And although not the Ivies or most people’s dream school, I still made sure I got the best out of my college life and education. As I wanted that college experience , I still lived on campus . Even got my dream senior project to work at Walt Disney Imagineering. And before graduation, got a great job offer to work in Seattle that I got because of my college’s on-campus interviews . I guess my point is , even though you didn’t get into your dream school, as long as you work and study hard, network with as many people you can, and enjoy the 4 years as they go by fast . I still think about my college years and it’s some of the best times in my life . Good Luck!

@david-liorusa64222 жыл бұрын
Hey L_ thanks for asking the qeustion. Unis in Switzerland are top tier but we have guaranteed admission there, which means that many people go there. Only 40%ish pass the first year, since they do not want to make a selection before freshman year. My friends there told me the culture is very toxic since everyone is kind of competing with each other. Plus, most people spend their time outside working because the workload is so high. Compared to US schools, EPFL and ETH Zurich have so much more hours per week and so much work that it ends up being unfulfilling. Indeed, you get a high paying ob, but I truly think that the US succeeds at making college education enriching, fulfilling, and interdisciplinary. Hope that helped!

@@david-liorusa6422 I think master, usually being 2 years, def also have access to great experiences, you can still join many events, and clubs and all. The missing experience for master would likely be the dorm experience (where many people make friends), because master students sometimes are restricted from applying to dorms. Regardless which university or college you go to, def join many clubs for that college experience. As an Asian student, I know many people studying their bachelor's in Asia and go to US for masters and still have a great experience in social life and all. This is a possible route. I see in your comments you’re thinking about a gap year. I’d take the biggest scholarship and spend a year there and then transfer to your “dream school.” You’ll show colleges what you’re capable of and you’ll not have to fit into their boxes as much as when you’re aiming for freshman entrance (it’s easier to get in as a transfer). Come to the U.S. and see if you even like it here 😅 P.S. My son’s going to LMU, class of ‘26

I would say that for the SAT, you need higher than 1540 if you’re from Europe. Try to show your passions, but remember the competition is fierce with all the feeder schools out there. Try to ask your recommenders from top letters, and take the time to write your essays.

The American admission process is very different from that of European countries. In Europe, academics, grades and results in standardized tests are the only things schools look for when deciding who gets admitted or not. But in the US, many more factors come into play. Since US colleges get most of their funding from alumni donations, they prioritize students who have the most chance of being donors once they graduate. This is common knowledge although college administrators will never openly admit it. So American graduates are much more likely to give back to their alma mater than international students are since alumni donation is part and parcel of American culture while that's not necessarily the case in most countries, especially in countries where the university system is public as is the case in Europe. That's why most international students who get admitted at US schools come from very wealthy families or very reputed families (ex.: children of presidents, ministers, royalty, etc.). So don't let all these refusals put you down. In all honesty, Switzerland is an amazing country with excellent universities. So I'm a bit surprised you want to study in the US that much since your country probably has a better university system as a whole than in the US! However, if you really want to study in an English speaking country, I would suggest Canada since their universities are on par with American ones, while still having an admission process that's a lot simpler for international students. Canada has great English speaking (and French speaking) universities: McGill, U of Toronto, UBC, McMaster, Queen's, Waterloo, etc. So maybe you should take a look at them! French speaking students are the smartest students I've met in my whole life, so don't let the refusals you got from American colleges discourage you! I'm sure you're an extremely bright person, especially if you're the product of Swiss education! The mere fact that you're at least bilingual already gives you an asset most American students don't have!
@david-liorusa642210 ай бұрын
Switzerland has a terrible university system happiness-wise with most students doing absolutely nothing outside of school, so it was a big no for me. I am aware of the sad reality that US schools are more like a business than a university, but thanks for the kind words; I really appreciate it. I received funding to study finance at LSE, and I love it!

@david-liorusa64222 жыл бұрын
