They actually became famous in the 80’s. But they were also huge in the 90’s of course. And are still able to sellout stadiums worldwide.

Or big spherical buildings in Vegas (that was an amazing show). Also, not punk. Even at the War album, post punk was probably a better definition. For Joshua Tree, they were flirting with Americana...

I will ALWAYS love U2. Rock legends. Their sound is not just post-punk, they crossed into many genres, most notably: alternative rock, electronica, and pop rock. Also, not just the 90s: they were undeniably the biggest band in the world in the mid-80s. And still are hugely popular. *Best live band still playing today.*

U2 have been around for a long time now. I'm not sure if they would ever describe themselves as punk per se but they certainly came out of it and were influenced by it in their earliest years. They were big into bands like the Clash and the Ramones when they were young. And let's be clear - they were VERY young when they started - 14-15+ years old so considering they are all into their 60s now, they have spent their lives creating and performing music. What's unique is that in such a large expanse of time, they experimented in many different sounds. Their young years was certainly influenced by punk and that early material is basic yet alive with youthful energy. Then as they became better musicians and worked with some very talented producers, you can hear their sound evolve. There is NuWave U2, Americana/Anthemic U2, Rhythm and Blues U2, Cyberpunk U2, Disco/Dance/Electronica U2, Adult Contemporary U2 and even some weird, arty stuff in there as well such as the album they released as the Passengers. They have made music with everyone from Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Leonard Cohen and more. They are incredible live - whether it was their famous 1985 LiveAid performance that introduced them to the world at large, their Sarajevo concert that is the subject of a film coming out to Zoo TV, Popmart and their many other tours, they singlehandedly kicked live concerts into the modern era. They were first noted for their fiery political songs - politics, art, love and relationships, religion - they cover it all and do so quite well. A deep dive into their catalogue would be worth your time; if you do - I recommend doing it in order of releases so you can hear their sound - and the guys themselves - grow and evolve over time. There is nobody quite like them; they have had a remarkable run and are still going strong. Good luck and thanks for the video ! o7

U2 got their start with social activism campaigning for peace and against terrorism in Ireland in the 80s. Listen to their song Sunday Bloody Sunday. Also, they were deeply involved in the effort to solve the East African Famine of 1984. Bono has beautiful vocals on the fundraising relief record called Do They Know It's Christmas? which started an international famine relief charity collab of all-stars called Live Aid, along with USA For Africa.

Wrote this song about being in a rock band and being newly married. When on the road, he desperately wants to be home, but when he's home, all he can only think about being back on the road.

U2 is not punk rock. Not by a long shot. The band was long considered to be "alternative" rock through their first few albums, but when their 1987 album The Joshua Tree came out, it hit a nerve with people and they loved it. Since then, they're basically just pop rock. I have loved and followed U2 since their inception. But I've never once heard them described as punk rock.

Hello Bimu, you should definitely do more reactions with your friend. (IMhO) I'm a big U2 fan...hereAnd your friend is right, U2 does have a distinct sound. They are also known for standing up against social injustice. They have an extensive collection of great tunes to check out, if interested. here's another song by them, if interested. "U2 - One (Official Music Video)" (by the channel: U2) --This song by the Irish rock band, is from their seventh album called "Achtung Baby" released in 1991. One of the interesting things about this song is, during the recording sessions at Hansa Studios in Berlin, tensions arose between the band members over the direction of U2's sound and the quality of their material. However, they achieved a breakthrough with the improvisation of this particular song "ONE." The lyrics written by lead singer "Bono," were inspired by the band members fractured relationships, and the context around the German Reunification. Although, the lyrics pretty much describe disfunction and disunity, they have been interpreted in other ways. Either way, the song became a pivotal track on the album. And apparently, they smashed it out of the ballpark, because it became one of their biggest hit singles. Funfact: the very first song on this album "Zoo Station" was also influenced by Berlin & WWII. It was fun rocking with you both. Thanks for sharing. peace out~

Don't knowvyour beliefs, but uou mentioned u2's Christian roots, which are still there today. You should ck out mysterious ways from the 90's. On the surface, one of their most secular songs. Could be about a woman. But, it is also about the Holly Spirit and how the Holly spirit works in mysterious ways.

This is the complex relationship of jesus christ and a believer. The one who gives themselves away is jesus christ and with or without is how you cant live without this love but how hard life is because you can never measure up to this love

I'm sorry but a minute in and your friend has already made three mistakes about the band. maybe I'm a Gen Xer stuck in the past but as far as I know they weren't ever a Christian band, they weren't punk, and they didn't start in the 90s. the band formed in the late seventies and their first album came out in 1980. so now I restarted the video and to quote your friend: "they were originally a Christian band and now they're a punk band." absolutely not. and it makes sense to ask about punk rock if you've never heard of it but I can't even predict what your friend is going to say. (just listen to something by the Sex Pistols or the Ramones if you want to know what punk rock was.) "punk put a goth spin on rock" ?????? No. No. No. and punk was the late 70s not the 90s yikes I know I'm being a jerk but listening to somebody being so confidently wrong is really frustrating. and if you haven't listened to any goth try early 80s Sisters of Mercy or The Cure

Thanks 👍! U2's music scene became known worldwide through the exceptionally energetic and passionate Red Rocks Colorado concert in 1983. Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, I Threw A Brick Through Window, Out Of Control and Electric Co are just a few highlights, especially you would get to know U2 with their initial post-punk influence. You have now started with the biggest hit/streaming from the adult phase from the great album Joshua Tree✌.

Let's get one thing straight. U2 could've retired in 1989 and still made the Rock n roll Hall of fame. Their 90s stuff was good but not necessary to their greatness.
