While I might not agree with everything you say, I do want to thank you for giving me an opportunity for self reflection and introspection by taking the time to listen to what you had to say and taking the time to try to understand your opinion. I think you should if you can keep making these videos because they are definitely topics worth discussing and thinking about.

Oh my... Thank you so much for this video! Ever since I was a kid, I loved learning stuff and had obsessions with learning interesting and random stuff. When I entered high school, I became obsessed with understanding Physics, Maths, and Chemistry, especially trying to translate the equations into concepts that I can attack from every angle. I was so scared that my foundations were not strong enough when I realized I couldn't do it, and I feel like it brought me down a lot into that narrow-minded view of "mastery" whereas I should've just let it be and looked at it like communicating an idea, rather than mastering the language, like you said. Now that I am studying first year of engineering outside of the US, I struggled since my profs were not like the teachers I had back in school nor were the material they provided as intuitive as that I got in high school (besides all the changes in standards and increase in pace/topics/assumptions that you still remember from high school itself). I felt like I was not understanding stuff well at all and had pushed myself to these unrealistic standards. (Eg. some basics Vector Calculus was taught in physics in the second week of itself; Gradient Divergence Curl relations were given as is and I wanted to find the intuition behind it) and I was upset that I was not "understanding" it well, even though I could some of the problems (or set it up at the very least). I stumbled across this video before I was going to study Multivariable calculus and I think you just saved a young boy from having a miserable college experience and study technique. I'm going to keep in mind what you said earlier: I am going to college to become a better learner and to do my own research, not to master a subject and become an expert. :)

Thank you, your videos help demystify math for me. I'm usually intimidated by it but understanding it is just a language, and mathematicians are just communicators, makes it feel... human.

I do think that we should strive to let students fully grasp the concepts and importance of the topics that they are studying. I am referring to stem fields because yes you can get the grades to pass and you can get your license but are you actually qualified and confident to be someone who can make a positive difference in peoples lives through your practice? I guess I just don’t want half ass engineers or doctors or professors even

Everything seems simple in theory, but hard to follow through with. Like to lose weight, I simply need to eat less. That's not hard to understand, but it's hard to follow through with it. 😔 A lot of your advice is great, but I find myself struggling to actually do it. Any suggestions?

Make your goal to accomplish nothing and you’ll never have a problem. All issues are simply a perspective of what you’re trying to not achieve.

This seems like counter intuitive advice but I think it actually works. I've been swimming with my father everyday for probably like six months. I've been really into running in the past, so this isn't most cardiovascularly fit I've ever been but I've never been so consistent. And a big reason for that is I just find swimming to be a fun, low impact exercise. And I haven't really had a goal in particular. I try to improve how fast I go doing laps but I don't put too much pressure to constantly one up myself everyday. It's fine to half ass exercises sometimes if the goal is just to be healthy. Doing that and being consistent will make you much better off than burning yourself out with only high intensity exercise. Keep experimenting with little things and see what sticks. Strive for consistency over 6 months to a year first. That's enough time to fully integrate something new into your life style. Then if you want to improve after that, make some adjustments or add on some new habits. For weight loss, I'd suggest just making small changes to your eating/cooking habits overtime and finding healthier substitutes to foods/drinks you like. If you still live with family, maybe encourage them to do the same because changing your habits can be hard without support from the people you live with. I'm not some fitness guru though. I'm still clearly figuring this stuff out myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

youll be fine man i promise. Im a freshman in college and have not taken any math since my junior year of high school. I have to put in a lot of extra time everyday (5 hours a day) to keep up, but as im getting better I find myself spending less time doing the work, and more time understanding and doing quality work! I believe in you, the key is just to be persistent!

If you’re going to college for something stem related, you’re going to be happy you worked ahead in a year or two. It’s going to be hard no matter what, so better to just start early. I pretty much did what you did, with brief calc, in my senior year but I wish I had started earlier.

This may sound weird but I enjoy doing arithmetic ,algebra, trig in my free time . I usually go on khan academy to practice and KZbin . I enjoy watching your podcast . I always wanted to learn calculus but I am too scared . I prefer to learn it when my free time instead of in college.any advice ? 😊
@Currybro8882 ай бұрын
The hardest part about calculus is actually the algebra and trigonometry. If you got those down then calculus should be a breeze.

Intrinsic motivation is a greater motivator than extrinsic. I would say learning on your own is way better than doing it at a college. You can even clep out of it if you want.

It’s unusual maybe but lots of interests and hobbies are. That doesn’t make it bad. Like crossword puzzles, math is a way of exercising your brain that some people happen to enjoy. I’d say you’re in good company here. If you want to learn calculus I’d say pick up a textbook or online course and just dive in. What’s the worst that could happen?

I’m a senior in high school who just kinda got a wake up call due to being unprepared for the college application process (such a hard thing to do right 😂) anyways I’m trying to apply myself a bit more now and your channel randomly popped up for me. I really like listening to your takes and I feel like it’s something I’ve never heard before. I try to apply it to my high school studies to see if it works the same and I could definitely see the appeal. In college I will 100% use your methods for learning how to learn instead of blaming my professors.

Couldn't agree nore with video. Definitely don't go into college thinking you're gonna learn from your profs. Especially STEM majors. If you're lucky, you might be able to learn from a handful, but that's big time lucky. That's the primary difference between high school and college.
