A heartbroken dad is speaking out after his daughter died while they hiked Yosemite’s Half Dome. Grace Rohloff was hiking with her dad. Johnathan Rohloff tells Inside Edition his daughter had checked the forecast. When they made it to the top, a storm appeared out of nowhere. It began to pour during their descent. Unfortunately, she slipped off the side. As Jonathan Rohloff mourns his daughter's death, he says he will now work to make Half Dome a safer adventure.

Really sad. I've thought about taking my own daughter on more risky hikes I've done like Half Dome and Angels Landing, but I couldn't bare the thought of losing her because of something I pushed on her. This young lady was extremely capable, but that granite gets so slick when wet. The only way I do Half Dome again is with a harness clipped to the cable.

Attempted to finish the Half Dome climb. But when I got to the cables/steps and looked up at nothing but a line of people, something said “ don’t do this”. Going up was going to be a slow challenge and coming down/having to move out of the way of the up climbers was unsettling. When you add a potential storm/lightning possibly arriving- disaster is a real possibility. I turned around and headed back and to this day, I don’t regret it because there was this “ bad vibe” about those cables..

On my way down Half Dome back in 2013, a guy above me was afraid of heights and wanted to conquer his fear by going on Half Dome. He was too afraid to hold onto the cables with both hands because he had to look down while descending backwards. This forced him to hold onto one cable with both hands. I told him not to do that but he didn't listen. He ended up slipping a short time later and almost fell to his death. He was very lucky to have hit the pole between his legs to stop his fall. A gentleman above him moved down to walk/talk him down safely the rest of the way.

I've done this hike several times. Never rush coming down; that was their mistake. They could've waited for the storm to pass. There is a sign at the top that explicitly states what to do when a storm is coming, especially a thunderstorm. To get back to the valley, it's about a 5-6 hour trek down. You're essentially stuck at the top until then. Patience could've been the lynchpin to that young girl's survival.

Such a sad story. My heart goes out to this father. When he said 65 and cloudy, I shook my head. In Arizona, 65 and cloudy is a winter's day; in Yosemite, it's a game of roulette.. and wet granite backs for bad footing. In the late 80's I almost lost my life on the hike down from upper Vernal Falls.. at the top, there is was a handrail section that extended from the top of the falls down the path a little bit, but it stopped after about 100ft or so and there was no more railing the rest of the way down. I lost my footing on granite that was made wet from the mist rising up from the falls, and I slipped over the edge, both feet and legs flew over and I managed to grab THE LAST vertical support for the railing to prevent from going over.. had I slipped another step or two later, there would have been no railing at all and I wouldn't have been so lucky.. Sorry for your loss Mr Rohloff.. RIP Grace.. you may be gone, but here's to never being forgotten..

I've done both Half Dome and Angel's landing within 1 week. I think Angel's landing is equally scary because of the sheer drop on each side. Half dome doesn't have that same kind of drop like air beneath your feet. Half dome isn't as crowded as it's more challenging to hike to the cables and a permit is required so reducing the crowd and therefore the risk.

This was back around 2004-2006 (probably was 2006 since I graduated 8th grade in 06). It is a hard climb and personally I don't think any children should hike it. Sad when I hear people say "they died doing what they loved". When you look at that area and wet conditions, you could predict it. Climbing half dome, or anywhere, isn't worth losing a life -esp such a young person. To each his own, I understand, but if you think the reward is worth the risk you might need to re-evaluate what's important in life

I climbed up 35 years ago. It's surreal to say that, because as I look at it now on video there's no way I could do it now. I saw so many near deaths in Yosemite over the years. It's easy to lose footing, lose balance or make a small error in judgement that can cost a life and yet she did everything right. Such a tragedy is incomprehensible as a parent but we all watch and feel a sliver of that pain with the family. May she rest in peace and may her family and friends have some comfort in the future.

The thrill lies in the fact that it's inherently NOT safe. Everyone has free will and its up to the individual to choose to take the risk for an adrenaline rush and great memory payoff.
