I told him not to do that but he didn't listen. He ended up slipping a short time later and almost fell to his death. He was very lucky to have hit the pole between his legs to stop his fall. Such a sad story. My heart goes out to this father. When he said 65 and cloudy, I shook my head. In Arizona, 65 and cloudy is a winter's day; in Yosemite, it's a game of roulette.. and wet granite backs for bad footing. In the late 80's I almost lost my life on the hike down from upper Vernal Falls.. at the top, there is was a handrail section that extended from the top of the falls down the path a little bit, but it stopped after about 100ft or so and there was no more railing the rest of the way down. I lost my footing on granite that was made wet from the mist rising up from the falls, and I slipped over the edge, both feet and legs flew over and I managed to grab THE LAST vertical support for the railing to prevent from going over.. had I slipped another step or two later, there would have been no railing at all and I wouldn't have been so lucky.. Sorry for your loss Mr Rohloff.. RIP Grace.. you may be gone, but here's to never being forgotten..

When my son was in 7th grade, his school group went to Yosemite camping trip. Back then I never heard of hiking up Half Dome. But his school had his group hike it up. The school never notified the parents to bring gloves and decent shoes. I was shocked to learn how challenging it is to climb the Half Dome.
@UrSammichАй бұрын
My school had the same trip in 8th grade and we were actually told to bring decent shoes for hiking and water container for drinking along with general clothes. We weren't told to bring gloves either and I remember somethings being "optional". I know back then some of my classmates did hike half dome while I choose to do some of the lighter hikes. This was back around 2004-2006 (probably was 2006 since I graduated 8th grade in 06). It is a hard climb and personally I don't think any children should hike it. I did the sierra tree hike and I thought that was tough as we climbed up a high mountain peak to stop and rest. I can't imagine climbing half dome.

Have you even seen what the half dome ascent looks like? It isn't something that requires protection. Children have done this and people do this yearly with no issues. Issue here was rain. Caused a slick surface on top of slick wires that were most likely difficult to grip. Could of been solved by bringing a pair of good gloves. Hindsight obviously, but I know now if I ever go to halfdome for that hike I will be bringing a good pair of gloves with some grip.

I saw a documentary on a group that got stuck there in a lightning storm. Absolutely brutal.

I didn't even know that kind of climbing/hiking was available at Half Dome. So horrible!!

I climbed up 35 years ago. It's surreal to say that, because as I look at it now on video there's no way I could do it now. I saw so many near deaths in Yosemite over the years. It's easy to lose footing, lose balance or make a small error in judgement that can cost a life and yet she did everything right. Such a tragedy is incomprehensible as a parent but we all watch and feel a sliver of that pain with the family. May she rest in peace and may her family and friends have some comfort in the future.

Something feels gravely off here. Just a terrible feeling I get. Were there any witnesses to her fall? The dad's lack of emotion is eerie. And to purposely hike when the weather did hint at storms seems like a convenient scapegoat. He could easily blame her falling on the slick rocks. Suspicious AF

Right?! I thought I was crazy for feeling so off about it. Definitely eerie

There's a darkness in his eyes, y'all. The way he looks to the left when he describes her falling... I can just FEEL that he is lying.

I’m just wondering were they there alone? Nobody else was climbing that day? Bc someone else said that you both climb up and down between those cables so was there no one under her? Like how did she fall all the way down without hitting anyone else or without anyone grabbing her to stop her fall? (I also always think parents who talk to media right after their child dies is weird af).

At the very least. At the worst, one has to wonder why she was in front of him - open to fall - and not behind him.

My mother was pregnant in me when my father insisted on a hike she was the good obedient wife so she started on a rocky mountain rugged terrain, a cliff with the raging sea beneath, algae made it slippery and she lost footing she says she pushed her abdomen against the wall and started moving like a snake till she could find her way, that is how she described it even it is hard to imagine, when I think that she used her abdomen to save us I like to think I helped her from the inside, she was a great woman and a great mother nothing she wouldn't do to protect her children even losing her life, I never wanted her to lose her life but she lost it any way
