I just finished my UBC application and found u in my recommended kinda creeped out but i just wanted to know the pros and cons of living in UBC and Vancouver in general so it can help me decide what uni i should go to next year
@lina.lecompte6 жыл бұрын
hahaha that's funny! Honestly there's tons and tons of pros - it's very culturally diverse, it's absolutely gorgeous (we have the city, but also the mountains, and the ocean - so you can practically do everything), the UBC campus is really beautiful and most people are really welcoming, UBC is on the top 40 list of universities in the whole world if that's something that matters to you, and there's quite a lot more. For cons, I'd say it's a pretty expensive city, especially in terms of housing costs, and some people would rather have a smaller campus (not me! but I guess it's a preference), also depending on where you're from you might not be used to the winter here- there's a time period where it is basically just constantly rainy and cloudy (and sometimes it snows), and it gets dark at around 4pm. Again though - there's a lot of positives!
@mariaibrahim51506 жыл бұрын
@@lina.lecompte Ya the thing is i live in Kuwait where it is practically the hotest country in the world and i feel like not having sun would affect my mental health a lot but i honestly fell in love from the glimpses u showed of the campus and city. But thanks a lot that was very helpful cuz ill need to start seriously thinking about it IF i get an offer 😂😂 cuz im also apply to other top universities in canada including U of T where the weather is even worse so i dont really know what to do
@lina.lecompte6 жыл бұрын
Maria Ibrahim that’s totally fair- it would definitely be a big change! But in terms of weather it’s probably the best place in Canada to go to university- Toronto is much much colder and it snows wayyyy more than it does here. My boyfriend goes to school in Toronto and it gets to -25 degrees Celsius whereas in Vancouver that doesn’t really happen since we’re right by the ocean.
@mariaibrahim51506 жыл бұрын
@@lina.lecompte Ya i heard about the extreme weather in Toronto and in Canada in general it's the major drawback for me but im sure in thr end whatevet i decide it woulf be great either way and ill just get used to the weather change and thanks again for your help!! hey! I just got into UBC and I was wondering if you know anyone in media studies or the B+MM masters of management program? I couldn’t find a lot of information about it. Also, how does the dreary weather affect you? Is it hard to keep motivated when it isn’t nice and sunny? I heard it is difficult to find housing after first year since it isn’t guaranteed. Is that true?
@lina.lecompte5 жыл бұрын
Hi, congrats! A few of my friends are in media studies, and others in the B+MM program! They're both fairly new programs, I think Media Studies only started about 3 years ago, so there isn't a ton of information about it because I don't even think anyone has graduated with that title yet. I've lived in Vancouver for about 10 years now so I've gotten pretty used to it, but it definitely is harder to stay motivated in winter.... although sometimes its better in terms of studying because you're not incentivized to go outside, and are almost forced to study if that makes sense. And yes! it is harder to find housing after 1st year since it's not guaranteed - especially UBC residence, but most people find places off campus that are pretty close by :)

I would be studying kinesiology and i just wanted to know how the school terms work and vacation and how big classes normally are.
@lina.lecompte6 жыл бұрын
Vancouver is a pretty expensive city to live in - most of the info you'd be able to find online!! Also tuition for international students is much more expensive than it is for a local like me, so you might want to check that out on their website as well. Winter Session goes from September - April and summer terms are from May-August :) Class sizes depend on the program - mine are pretty big because psychology is a big program here at UBC (usually about 100+ students in a lecture), but some of my electives have wayy smaller classes (for example, my photography class only had 20 people). I'm not sure about kinesiology though!

I want to get into UBC buisness so bad:( but it’s extremely selective. Do you have any advice for my application? Also, does not getting into the program you applied for mean that you’ll get rejected from the school?
@lina.lecompte5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I have this video up on my channel for application tips: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qovEpmRpmLSnbc0 It doesn't necessarily mean you'll get rejected, you may just be accepted into your second choice. So if your first choice was Business and your second choice was the Faculty of Arts, then if you don't get into the business program you might be accepted to arts and you may be able to transfer into business in a later year

How would you say making friends at UBC is? I applied there for fall 2019 but I've heard it can be pretty isolating so I was just curious :)
@lina.lecompte6 жыл бұрын
mhmm I commuted in my first year so I found it a lot more difficult than my friends who lived on residence - but I was in a program called "Collegia" for 1st year commuters that was fairly helpful in meeting new people. Honestly, its a matter of getting involved in different clubs and groups and often times taking the first step to talk to someone! It can obviously be isolating (like any other place) if you aren't very involved in the community - I think it's ultimately what you make of it!
