I just want to give a shout out to the Bedrock comic book stores in Houston. I shop there often, and thankfully the flood didn't effect their stores. there should be print & binding shops that allow onsite fabrication in a coffee/pot/comic/novelties & book shop atmosphere. You can physically browse & develop pull lists, and place orders based on being in a store that is comic based. Digital subscriptions would be connected to them somehow. Think about it as Kinko's meets Barnes & Nobles as your local comic book store.

Some of my local shops (Austin Tx) have tabletop games as well, seems like a great way to keep the social aspect alive and those stores are almost always buzzing with energy. Others have art gallery showings of comic & pop culture art and host events outside of the comics-only sphere. Love the idea of a reading-area / coffee shop combo as well

Look, I'm old school and I get wanting to hold the paper in your hands but keeping real, digital comics are awesome and super convenient. You can zoom in on every panel to appreciate the artwork in a way you can't with paper and you can have 1,000+ comics that will never deteriorate all on a notebook. No reason you can't love both.

Never have understood the whole feel and smell of a book thing, and I've been reading since I was 4. I am now 44, and much prefer digital reading, of both comics and regular books. But hey...you do you. That's part of what makes humanity great, is diversity, in all things. As for the art thing...you can read on a PC, allowing you to have the screen and resolution as large as you want...so that's really not a thing. And in all honesty...there is no physical comic that looks as good as a backlit tablet or PC...in my opinion.
@laurah.horsfall17297 жыл бұрын
Vex (There's plenty of irony in my typing this on a laptop right now.....but) I get serious eye irritation from screens -- enough to where it can lead to migraines. Anything I CAN read in physical form, I do. Congrats on reading at age 4, though -- pretty impressive. I think I was still at the coloring book stage, then (a giant one with Supes, Bats and WW).
@vexistentialist7 жыл бұрын
Completely understandable, and eye fatigue is definitely a real problem. I work on a PC for a good portion of every day, and I take breaks, as well as wear Gunnar's, occasionally, for eye strain. I think most people can tell when this is beginning to happen, though...and I'm not convinced that physical book reading is really much better on your eyes, as far as that goes. I've had to take breaks from reading physical novels for the exact same reasons. Either way...again, not trying to take anyone's physical books from them, or denigrate them for preferring that delivery method...it simply isn't my preference.

I just started to collect comics again about 3 years ago after a decade and a half off. I love going to the store, talking with the shop people, and going through the isles looking for a new book. It's way better. The digital world is great for so many things. But I really like the physical medium of comics. I converted to mp3s/WAV files years ago and I miss having albums with art. I miss holding the item. Comics have brought that back for me. I don't want that to go away.
@mnoir72577 жыл бұрын
Also, digital just doesn't have the same magic. I am tired of staring at screens all day. I am a web designer, graphic designer, and music producer. All of this is done on a computer. I love comics because I get to turn on a warm light and hold a book. It's just way better. Too many devices and screens.

Hugo Vasquez yeah, they have every issue of Thor starting in the mid 70s. The Simonson run starts on #337. Unlimited is awesome for catching up on old comics. They don't have all of the really old stuff, it seems like their selection is pretty spotty before the mid 70s but if it came out in the 80s, 90s or 00s it's probably there. At least I haven't gone looking for a book from that time that I couldn't find.

I really love physical copies of entertainment (movies, tv shows, comics, books). I appreciate the art and holding it physically in my hand and having a collection in my house that I can look at. When digital first came available I thought "oh wow that's awesome! Now I don't have to get up and get the disc and put it in the system/player!". So, that was nice for a while but then 2-3 years ago I just missed that feeling of looking at the cover or going through the booklet inside, etc. so ever since then I had to re-purchase a lot of things I had once had and got rid of for example movies, comics, etc. and I am really thrilled I made that decision. I can't explain the feeling but it just makes me feel whole again! I understand that some movies and comics I am not too thrilled about but would still like to check out or own then I will go digital for those things. I only own physical movies that are either comic book movies (mostly DC.. sorry Marvel) or some of my other favorite films of all-time (such as Goodfellas, The Departed, etc.). Anyways, loved the conversation at the beginning and hope we don't keep getting rid of brick and mortar stores and go digital only. That would be a very scary and lonely world.

My power went out for 2 weeks in the dead of winter, and I have battery backups for my tablet, as well as a generator, for heat and battery charging. Can't read a book in the dark. Much rather have a backlit tablet than trying to do it by candles or LED lanterns. Not trying to change your mind...you do you...but there is no "necessary" for everyone. There are plenty of benefits to both sides, and just like the whole Marvel/DC thing...they can coincide, in harmony...doesn't have to be a battle.

In the U.K. there are many comic book shops that are busy and I think it's because they offer more than just comics. The other day I went into Forbidden Planet in London and it was packed in both the merchandise and comics section. There were people from all over the world buying all sorts of things. As long as shops make themselves clean and well lit etc and welcoming then I think there will always be those places to go. I think digital and physical can coexist because they may always be there together. I've always thought they should add coffee etc and sofas to create that environment.

The way u sell comics in paper form is to provide content that u cant get digitally. Exclusive art work, and dialogue that can only be in paper form brings the value of comic books back. It may not work for the smaller brands but marvel and dc should be fine using this strategy.

I'm guessing you're a little younger than that. I think the best possible thing the bigger companies like dc and marvel could do for their comics is give us digital copies with the purchase of physical copies like most blurays come with digital versions for ultraviolet/vudu. I like the convenience of having a digital copy and how it allows me to keep my physical copy protected from wear and tear like the rest of my collection and allows me to fully enjoy it at the same time and it keeps comic book stores and the comic culture that they're a major factor of alive . If I have to choose between the two I'm always gong to go for the physical copy. I don't believe in paying for disposable art and further isolating people from each other. Great shout out to amoeba from rmb, I move out of l.a. A few years ago and that store was part of my daily routine and its a shame to hear that it's going away. That store is extremely important to real dj culture and was where I met a lot of friends that I'm still close with today when I first moved out to Cali. Just a thought but for comic book stores to survive, they need to offer something that beats the internet. Comic book stores and comic companies need to sit down and have a meeting. If comic book stores became like movie cinemas in that the comics were released in the stores a few weeks or a month before it is released on the internet. then maybe JUST maybe this may save some of the comic stores from going extinct. If they can do that and maybe add meet and greets/ signings that will help some survive. If the stores can't offer something you can't get on the internet then I think they will sadly lose.

There's a comic/coffee shop in my city, and it sucks. You think giving people the option to sit and read and manhandle comics while drinking coffee is a good idea? They've got all of their trades shrink wrapped to discourage reading, which I understand. But it turns off people going there to look for comics because nobody wants to buy a graphic novel without at least glancing at the inside. Also, how easy do you think it is to run a comic shop? How about a coffee shop? Now can you imagine a place that can do both of those well? It's a tall order.

The digital comic thing would only work, if hundreds of millions of people would buy and read comics that way on a constant basis. Unlike a book (novel) publisher, there are at least 3 artists to pay when it comes to a comic book (writer, "inker", drawer). Many people are reluctant to pay 3,99 $ or 4,99 $ for a physical 22 page issue of a comic (here in Germany, they usually publish 2 american issues in 1 german issue and charge 4,99 €). But if you pay 0,99 $ for a comic digitally (I don't even know if that's the price) what's the cut for the artists and what's the cut for the publishers? They sell the equal amount of comics but the artists got way less money? I know, that there are flatrates for comics, but even those seem (at least for me) not to pay off. I love my paper issues (although you soon got issues with all the paper).

There's enough negativity on the internet and I hate to be "that guy" but the title of the video was Darkseid stand alone special and they spent maybe 3 mins of a 19 minute video talking about it. Lame.
