D. Nagasaki Rian Johnson strikes me as an autistic child with rich parents that bought their way into their special little boy getting to make his very own Star Wars film, and fucking butcher it. I watched Looper for the first time last year after hearing he was in charge of the next chapter of *the* most important franchise to me personally, and it’s *just* as much of a mess as The Last Jedi turned out to be. Looper is probably a fun pop-corn movie if you have zero attention span and just want to watch a slightly edgy action sci-fi, but as a *time travel* film it is an incoherent, illogical joke, and it’s not even funny. With both films it’s like he was getting off on trying to pre-empt what he thought the audience would be thinking and doing the exact opposite, almost invariably to the overall detriment of the film.

"I 'FUNDAMENTALLY DISAGREE WITH EVERY CHOICE' FOR LUKE IN THE LAST JEDI" - Mark Hamill Mark was right, and it hurts... Not sure if the council (or any other reviewers, for that matter) are bullied/paid by Disney to give it such high scores, but the movie doesn't get anything higher than a 3/10 from me (and this is still to high but I can't help it, I'm a SW fan and I'm hoping that there is hope) If you check the user reviews on the TLJ IMDB, you will get the complete opposite. And after seeing the movie yesterday at the premier (I'm still in shock, and not in a good way), I really have to agree with the IMDB crowd. I mean everyone has a right to their own opinion, and if Christian and Ken really like the movie, they have a right to say so. But...I only hope it is their opinion we hear, and not some (conspiracy theory) elaborate corporate web of Disney that has the media in it's pocket. Fundamentally the movie plot is ridiculous and beyond silly. The comedy is forced and unnecessary, there is too much of it and it doesn't feel natural. And the movie is taking a huge dump on every SW Movie that came before it, TFA included. It's sad to see that a franchise that inspires so many was ruined in one movie. Agreed the prequels were not good movies, but this one's garbage. And after seeing TLJ, I kinda miss Jar Jar. At least he gave a good punching bag. If you take Jar Jar out of the prequels, they almost are good. There is no one thing I could add or remove from TLJ to make it even remotely passable. to everyone who has not seen it yet, here is another quote from Hamill: "This is not going to go the way you think"
@n_papas48997 жыл бұрын
rewatch a pirated version, cut out finn and rose's little escapade and its so much better. AND try to reflect on what Luke came from when it was his own arrogance and high pedestal that caused the downfall of the Jedi (JUST LIKE ANAKIN). I admit im super disappointed with the script, that they didnt at least show more of snoke before his own arrogance killed him, that there is literally no galactic army after 30 years, that there literally isn't a single inkling about the knights of ren in it (I could go on and on about things that don't make sense in the gap between ROTJ and TFA.) BUT its not all trash, you're not focussing enough on some of the deeper themes in there (although some aren't fleshed out) that Star Wars is about. I like what they did with Kylo and Rey. Also a deeper movie than JJ's like the SW were used to but still doesn't live up to the OT and prequels bc there were alot of fizzlers in there that could have been drawn out so much more. I think a 6-7/10 is warranted. peace out fellow fanboy

Saw the movie last night...it's a 6/10 for me, today i am a bit disappointed in it, last night when i left the movie theatre i was furious with the choices the director made...the fans are going to be split 50/50 on this one, i'm all for them making brave choices but wasted opportunities & stupid choices are harming the franchise...this will be the first Star Wars movie that i only see once in the Cinema and it's pains me to say it but it was the choices the director made regarding the characters paths that hurt it the most. I'm dreading to read the fans reviews when it opens in the US today.

I said this above, but I feel it’s because the movie in your head can never be the film on the screen. You think about how things are going to play out, but they rarely marry up with the reality. Once you seperate the two visions (your own and Johnson’s) you see the film more clearly. Star Wars is a huge event, there’s a great deal of emotional investment in these movies and putting that to one side on a first viewing - when your excitement and anticipation is off the charts - is tough.

Ryan Bullick I understand what you’re saying, but having seen the film I get the choices. A sequel to Return of the Jedi in which everyone is enjoying a happy time of it would be a pretty boring film. Luke’s complex relationship with a religion he knows little about and has no one to guide him through, whilst also carrying the burden of being an icon to a galaxy that expects too much of him, is fantastic. It’s also realistic in a sense, because he was forced to confront and admit the failings of the Jedi order. As for Leia, how often do governments and orders really change things? There’ll always be enemies in politics and, so it is with the Galaxy. The empire falls, but doesn’t retreat into the night... knock over a despot leader/figure head and someone (a devoted acolyte) will spring up in their place.

With a big movie like this and characters we’ve loved for decades it’s very hard to separate the movie in your head from the movie on the screen. Especially the first time around. What you wanted - or expected - and what you get often don’t marry up with one another, so a second viewing can absolutely help clear things up. Also, and I’m guilty of this, Star Wars is such a rare film event, you get quite excited for it, the anticipation is huge, the fanfare around your first viewing is ramped up... some things pass you by, the film feels like it’s going a million miles an hour. A repeat viewing allows for greater focus.

I really enjoyed it. It’s very similar to ESB in that it’s a much better film - in terms of the story, character development an themes - than its predecessor at the expense of being so easily accessible. TFA was a fun time, but hardly revolutionary. It didn’t need to be, but that’s that. The only thing I didn’t like was scenes at a particular location and the plot therein that served only as a political soapbox and vanity piece for Rian Johnson. They’re completely unnecessary.
@connerclark36787 жыл бұрын
Michael Andrews It really is somewhere in between, and it depends on what you value. If you are invested in a prior knowledge of tactics and technology and limits of the universe, you’ll be unsettled. If you have any attachment to what old(er) Master Skywalker became and did in the EU, you’ll be beyond disappointed, possibly just confused and/or gut-punched. If you value powerful spiritual and moral messages, with abstract but deep representations of inner angels and demons, you will get a lot more from the film. It has a different set of strengths and weaknesses from VII so that I would guess Johnson was overcorrecting based on critical reviews of VII.
@WildSkyMtn7 жыл бұрын
The OT sparked because of mark hamill and Harrison ford were awesome together. That level of acting hasn’t been duplicated in the prequels or the Disney movies. Benicia del toro almost saves the movie but they did t let him talk to Luke. The only reason people will like this movie is cause it’s called Star Wars. That’s not a bad problem to have. But it’s a problem Disney has to work on. Based on episode 7 and 8 I can say it’s obvious Disney didn’t have a vision of where to take the story when they bought the license. They just saw lunchboxes and toys and video games. That’s how it feels.

It does matter who Rey's parents are. We need a reason as to why Rey is such a powerful force user. Why is she more powerful than Anakin or Luke? Anakin was made a special case, and he went on to birth a son so of course they would share similar links with the force. Rey has no explanation and we're just made to believe she can do all this with very limited training "just coz". It's weak reasoning and disregards the deep mythology.

"Risk Taking Like Never Before "? Really? Risk taking is what Star Wars under Lucas was all about from ANH to TESB to ROTJ to TPM to AOTC to ROTS. That's what TFA was not about so if TLJ goes back to that then that is just the return to the norm after the abnormal TFA which was all about being safe and secure.

I mean Snoke was obviously never intended to be the bad guy. He was a tool to advance Kylo Rens character. That was obviously already in Force Awakens.
@roadkillz787 жыл бұрын
Indeed, he was a tool. When you make a character with no development, history, or backstory out of thin air simply to just to use as a plot device, it's a waste. It makes Kylo's advancement somewhat empty and meaningless. We will likely never know how much of a feat it was for Kylo to betray Snoke or what Snoke may have taught him. What's the purpose of the First Order considering they followed Snoke and his ambitions that we are all unaware of? Before the movie, we had the possibilities that Snoke was some mysterious entity that had potentially great ambitions to raising a new empire, now, we are left with, "just because he is/was a bad guy that Kylo needed to kill in order to take over".

I've seen all nine films theatrically, first-run (before Lucas ruined the originals with his "fixes" in the 1990's). Each and every time (even with the abysmal prequels), I left the theater thinking, "I want to see this again" and "I can't wait to see what will happen in the next one." That feeling was missing with this one. I have no desire to see it again, and I could care less what happens in episode 9. While there were fantastic scenes throughout, and the humor was top-notch, I felt the there was no cohesion to the film, but rather a disjointed assemblage of non-related and uninteresting sketches. Entire portions of the film were stupid and completely unnecessary (the entire Casino planet side-trip for one thing). If Johnson concentrated on the core characters, the film would have been more tolerable. Instead, he opted to give everyone unwarranted screen time, and the film suffers terribly. Even Rey, who stole every scene she was in in the episode 7, was under utilized. The entire film was a mess. As a "Star Wars" fan for 40 years, I have never been more disappointed in a "Star Wars" movie -- ever. And that's saying a lot, considering my feelings about the abominable prequels.

Hmmm??? I think I must have watched a different film to you guys? I've been a Jedi Coucil viewer since all the pre-release shows before The Force Awakens came out & I'm usually right on point with Kristian when we're talking Star Wars. But we're obviously parking our cars in very different garages on this one! I genuinely hope the rest of the fans out there enjoy it more than I did because this film was an enormous miss from me. I'm a lifelong fan since I first saw Star Wars (A New Hope to you kids out there, ha ha) asa 6 year old & I NEVER imagined after the joy that was The Force Awakens to have Rian Johnsons Star Wars film sitting above only The Phantom Menace & Attack of the Clones! The idea that I'd like Revenge of the Sith more than I like this film would have been laughable yesterday. But after getting up at 4.30 am this morning to watch it at 6am on the morning of release here in the UK, it's a sad, sorry reality! This was a 5 out of 10 for me after 1st viewing. I'd already booked tickets for a 2nd viewing tomorrow, but my gut feeling is it'll only drop after seeing it again. I just hope JJ can put us back on track in EpIX. Thanks for the review tho guys, even if it did feel like it wast heavily dusted with 'Disney pleasing' dose of Hollywood spin. The Last Jedi in a nutshell: took a shit on everything set up in Episode 7. All the potential was shit on and tossed out the window. The old trilogy? Same thing. Luke, was so out of character. A certain character had a laughable superman like moment. What a piece of shit. I didn't go in wanting to dislike it. I went in wanting to like it. Left all hype and expectations at the door. God King Bob Ross Well we won’t know the general audience consensus until we see what sort of legs and WOM this movie has. It’s the fandom (most of whom haven’t even seen the film and are going off spoilers) that’s divided but that was bound to happen. Fans have been speculating for two years and their theories are shattered in a little over two hours. But it’s funny since Empire, the franchise’s darling, initially met a mixed reception. It’s interesting that the fandom response to this second film is passionate as well. I stumbled on a few spoilers and while they’re not what I expected, they don’t really bother me. Like you said, I’ll form a true opinion when I see how it’s all executed.
