Besides the ruling I feel being incorrect, I think Sudden Death rules for TEAM competition should be revised. It should still continue as whoever misses first losses, however, they should have one single answer, together, as a TEAM, otherwise it’s essentially a singles competition and negates everything that came before to me.

Rocha isn't even one of my favorite competitors, but he's correct in saying that decision was staggeringly bad. Neither Murrell nor Ellison should have received a point. The difference between "O. Russell" and "O'Russell" isn't simply punctuation, as Mark tried reducing it to, but of a middle name + last name or one full last name. It's major. I'd also go as far as to say he's correct about the white boards' purpose. They're to prevent cheating. If someone answers first, they couldn't have cheated. It's a technicality that ignores the spirit of the boards' implementation in the first place, and when matches are decided by things like that, rather than tests of knowledge or skill, then the Schmoedown becomes a lot less fun.
@x-Bailey17-x6 жыл бұрын
The white board isn't just to prevent copying, it's to show you answered the question in the allotted time. Hypothetically, somebody could think of the right answer in the short time between the buzzer going and being asked to show their board.
@paulgibbons13666 жыл бұрын
As long as they've started writing they should be allowed to finish, you aren't punished for an oral round if you spurt out a remembered answer with a second to go.
@kingofurukgilgamesh78286 жыл бұрын
Murrell didn't write fast enough and Ellison didn't know how to spell the name. Those are not related to movie knowledge. I think they should stop with the overly serious rules and just award the point if the contestant knows the answer. Murrell clearly knew the answer, Ellison clearly knew the answer, give them points. That's my personal opinion. I never liked the "rules for the sake of rules" mentality.
@chrislamb61056 жыл бұрын
The problem is spelling does matter in many situations. Something where there’s an added consonant that changes the word entirely. If you aren’t the first one to answer then you can just say it how everyone else is. They just need to be more specific about what counts in spelling. Although i think it’s fine they just didn’t follow their own rules. David Russel (which wouldve been accepted) isn’t the same as David O’russel. If you’re going to be strict on Dan be strict with Chance.

The ruling on David O. Russell is bullshit. The mans full name is David Owen Russell. O'Russell is a completely different last name. You cant call it semantics because its obvious Chance believed the guys last name is O'Russell and that the O isnt his middle name. Completely wrong ruling in my opinion. As for the Murrell response that was definitely the right ruling because he didnt write the name down in time.
@CMShuckle6 жыл бұрын
PurpleandGold I think the real issue here is what was Rocha’s actual challenge. He can’t challenge that Dan, who admitted that what he wrote was not David O. Russell, should have counted AND that Chance’s answer was incorrect as O’Russel, as those are two separate challengeable issues. From what I saw before the cutaway, Rocha was challenging that Dan’s answer was acceptable and that seemed to be the consensus as that is what was discussed by Harloff and Ellis when they came back. If Rocha’s challenged was denied, which it was, then he does not get another challenge to call out Chance. Had Rocha let Dan’s answer go and only challenge Chance’s answer then he’d have had a better shot.
@MirrorAshes6 жыл бұрын
This is my take too, tough luck for Dan but those rules aren’t new, and if they are so important, spelling a guy’s name right ought to be equally strict. That wasn’t actually phonetically correct, more like coincidentally correct. David O’Russell has different emphasizes entirely.
@mandalore4ever6906 жыл бұрын
PurpleandGold 100% agree. They need new comissioner/judges.
@ThomasDailey6 жыл бұрын
Sounded to me like the rules are that spelling/punctuation isn't important so long as what is written can be pronounced as the correct answer. Based on that I think most would pronounce O'Russell the same as O. Russell. This is basically the same rules as Final Jeopardy. The main difference being on Final Jeopardy the host, Alex says the answers aloud. It's not up to the contestants to verbally give the correct pronunciation. It's based on what they've written which ensures a level playing field. Another difference is on Final Jeopardy you are given 30 seconds to answer. I believe here it's like 15 seconds. I'd be curious how Jeopardy would rule in this instance. I'd think they'd accept O'Russell as correct. Especially if they are going to accept O Russell which lacks the correct punctuation.

So originally I felt conflicted about the ruling because I understand where Rocha was coming from, but I get that if it's in the rules that you have to write it down then that is just how it is. However, once finding out that Ellison included the O as part of his last name that is a completely different situation. It'd be like writing down John S'Rocha rather than John S. Rocha. *SPOILERS* At first I didn't understand Rocha's argument of the ruling. I wasn't sure what he was getting at. But after hearing his explanation during the post-game, I get it. Dan knew the answer, he didn't cheat. But, as much as it kills me, I have to agree with the ruling. Dan didn't have it written down in time. You could see him hitting his head, he didn't know the answer for 95% of the allotted time, he didn't have it written down. A lot of competitors have lost the ruling for less offenses. I really want to see KOrruption get crushed in their next match. Right now, I want to see The Odd Couple take the tournament.

SPOILERS Man, I was so invested... and so pissed when Dan didn't get O'Russell. Now, I'm just like you, wanna see Korruption be beaten, but they're no joke. As for The Odd Couple, couldn't agree more.

I get you, and I also agree with the ruling at the end of it all. But Rocha was also pointing to the fact that Chance wrote O'Russell, as if that's his last name. Whereas his name is really David O. Russell, it's a middle initial not his last name. I had to do a triple take to pick that one up, but again, the ruling wasn't unfair.
@DooodOfLife6 жыл бұрын
@@elmatador8857 You're absolutely right, I didn't notice that. I think if Founding Fathers had challenged THAT, and not whether Dan's answer should have counted, they would have stayed alive. Man, that kinda makes their loss sting even more.

I believe it. It's just one of those things that flew under the radar. Everyone would have to have been laser-focused. Like Elvin said, it was such a minute detail, but could have been a game-changer.

Actually he wrote David O'Rusell, which while still technically incorrect, I would have accepted it

Yes, I agree. The teams should be able to converse on their answers until the team that wins a question that the other doesn't, WINS !!! Especially since these are from topics that are NOT announced.

Also this game is the BEST! The competitors, the creators, the judges, the commentary, the interviewers. Much love for you all! Everyone SHOULD be a Patreon supporter if they can be. I didn't think I would be because I'm a college student back by federal aid. I found it easier to look at it month-by-month and realized that it's like cutting a couple gas station snacks per month. I wish I could give more, and hopefully one day I can, but I urge all else to support them if they're financially able to.

Won't lie. Had a terrible day, like, seriously bad. Like, mom dying bad. And the ruling that a misspelled and mispronounced name beat a scribbled but correct name, from the FIRST answerer, honestly, made it worse. Also, the prior comment that the sudden death should be AS A TEAM, seems VERY correct to me. :(

The fact that Chance wrote O'Russell means he didn't know the answer. O'Russell is as different a name from Russell as McGuinness is from Guinness - and no one would accept Alec McGuinness as the answer to who played Obi-wan. It's not an issue of whether punctuation is required, but the fact that he added that apostrophe means he didn't know the O is a middle initial and thought the surname was O'Russell.
@drsoccer726 жыл бұрын
I mean the example you are giving is phonetically two different things though. He didn't add syllables, he added an apostrophe similar to how some people add letters to spelling. Recently from what I have seen is if it spelled somewhat similar and pronounced correctly they give it to them. Really it comes down to the rule and could go either way. I mean if Chance had said it where it sounded like an Irish name there would be no argument in my opinion. Also technically anyone who didn't write the period on the O would then have the answer wrong
@chucky25786 жыл бұрын
+David Ruffner Is his last name O'Russell or Russell? If Ellison wrote O'Russell, then we don't know whether he thought the last name was O'Russell or Russell...so they should have given another question or given him wrong.
@bbbylw6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree it's a tough call.
@bbbylw6 жыл бұрын
His name is David Owen Russell. Including the apostrophe suggests Chance thought the O was a prefix to the surname (like Mac, Fitz, De, etc.) rather than a middle initial.

This could've easily been a championship match! Shame that in ended on a sour note based on the final ruling. Yes, Dan's answer shouldn't count because he didn't write it in time but Chance's answer was incorrect as well. Going from "O. Russell" (the correct answer) to "O'Russell"(an incorrect answer) doesn't eliminate the middle name but rather it changes the last name. In this case, the spelling mattered and the panel either didn't notice or they got it wrong. Because Dan revealed his whiteboard first and had already begun his attempt at writing the correct answer, it's clear that all competitors knew the answer, at least phonetically. The best decision would've been to award one point to Rocha, one point to Kalinowski and move on to the next question. My suggestion for future team league sudden deaths: have the teams, not the competitors, answer each question. If you want to use the whiteboards, then have one whiteboard per team. That way we avoid a situation like this where all competitors knew the answer phonetically but one was not able to write it in time and another had an incorrect spelling that changed the meaning of his answer. And gosh, that post-game interview! I expected a lot of emotion from Rocha but I was not prepared for Dan, much less for Jenn. It sucks to see my two favorite competitors get so frustrated with the game like that. Those two guys got me to watch as many Schmoedown matches as I could. I really hope that Rocha manages to get that belt back to see him enjoy the game again asap.

The end might have been judged strictly by the rules but Rocha was absolutely right in the end, this exact situation has been ruled differently in the past where you couldn´t read the pad of the first person to answer.

@Creech7866 жыл бұрын
Rocha challenged whether Murrell’s answer was right since he said it aloud first. In that case, the ruling is correct because we all know you have to write it down. On the other hand, O’Russell is the wrong answer and we can only blame the judges for missing that.
