The first time I saw Last Jedi I went by myself on opening night. I am 44 and the next time I took my 8 year old with me. Having him along made me see the movie like I remember seeing the OT at the theater. The one thing my kid said was “Did you see the boy at the end had the Rebel ring?” and he said it like it was awesome and I may have missed it. To me, these scenes that people are complaining about are forgetting that if they were a kid see it, they would be no issues.
@thegreyinitiate36806 жыл бұрын
īsā Martell exactly! George Lucas has always maintained the point that he made these movies for kids. The issue with it all is, these kids that saw the originals in theaters grew up. These movies live in their minds and memories as some of the best experiences they’ve had in their lives. Then the prequels came and completely destroyed all of that for them. And it’s not necessarily because the prequels were of lesser quality (though objectively from a film making perspective there definitely is that point to make) but simply because it wasn’t how they remembered it. I grew up with the prequels. They were my Star Wars movies. I saw Revenge of the Sith in theaters 5 times and as an 8 year old, it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Going back and watching them now, yeah, I see the problems. But I also recognize that the originals have problems as well. And this is something that some people don’t do, for one reason or another. There are problems all over the original trilogy, but people tend to just give them a pass and put them on a pedestal. When rogue one came out on Blu-ray last year, I marathoned all of the movies in chronological order, and I discovered something that I wasn’t expecting as a result: Rogue One and The Force Awakens are, objectively, the best Star Wars movies that have been made. In terms of overall quality and consistency, none of the others come close. Phantom Menace is a mess. Attack of the Clones is a mess for most of it. Revenge of the Sith actually has some very redeeming qualities that you really start to notice when you see them all back to back to back. A New Hope is all over the place. It takes forever to get going and then once it does, the Death Star blows up and it ends. Empire is the best of the originals, and that primarily has to do with Kasdan’s script and the Kershner’s direction (both of which are things the other two originals lack). I found myself just skipping through most of Return of the Jedi cause as cute as the Ewoks are, the film screeches to a halt once they land on the forest moon. I am all for people giving civil criticism for things about The Last Jedi that they didn’t particularly like, but when people criticize one part of the saga and yet place other parts on pedestals and refuse to acknowledge that the whole franchise has had flaws, that is where I start to get annoyed. I absolutely love The Last Jedi. I don’t hold the originals as gospel as some people I know do. Maybe that is part of why I feel this way about it, I’m not sure. But for me, going to see The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi in theaters has made me feel like that 8 year old kid watching Revenge of the Sith for the first time again. And if these new movies can do that for me, just imagine what they’re able to do for 8 year olds today. They weren’t made for us....

I have said it before, I said it again: I would love a scene or two of Kylo in the castle in Mustafar 'hunted' by Han's shadow and 'taunted' by Ghost Luke...... a bit in a kind of gothic slat Castle of Cagliostro like or even a bit Hamlet like......
@giancork16566 жыл бұрын
Yep! It could be cool maybe....just a scene without getting to 'psycho drama' on it.... and maybe it could happen before or after that Kylo meets with the rest of the Knights......
@WhoWouldWantThisName6 жыл бұрын
I think it is HIGHLY unlikely we will get Harrison Ford back to do anything like that, but as Luke told Kylo, "See ya around kid." I believe he will make good on that and we will get some indication of Han still being in his thoughts and haunting him in that way. I look forward to it.
@giancork16566 жыл бұрын
WhoWould....yeah, when I said shadow I meant more on a psychological level, so no Harrison Ford just a 'shadow' of Han (not literally a shadow). They could also use sound by using Han voice from the 'bridge' scene in TFA. To Darren, Msclean. I am sorry to hear you might have not liked TLJ. I enjoyed it. Plus, what I write here is more akin to fan-fiction that what I can see them doing. And it is not said that my 'idea' is any good! A scene have to make SENSE within the overall movie and this could be a bit too left field and might not make any sense within the structure and character arcs in the Ep.9. Its just a 'cool' idea to play around in your head..... like a sort of short movie centered on Kylo disintegrating sanity..... :) I hope next movies will hit you more favorably , starting with Solo! Peace out!
@giancork16566 жыл бұрын
Logan When I say 'shadow' I mean more like a fleeting 'memory'...... maybe even just only a voice of Han of some words he said before Kylo killed him..... and the shadows would be more akin to German Expressionism.....
@WhoWouldWantThisName6 жыл бұрын
Maybe I should point out that I wasn't suggesting a ghost but merely Kylo having thoughts, memories, nightmares of his father. Without Ford they would be limited to merely giving us the fact that this is something happening to him, via conversation etc., rather than showing us. Which they may still do.

I feel like Rian Johnson is Holdo, and most of the audience is Poe. We question and we believe that he doesn’t care for all of this how we do, but in the end he cared just as much. We just had our expectations on how this was supposed to go and were questioning those above us...but we didn’t have the big picture. We need to show a little faith.

Wow that was an awesome council. I reaaaaally appreciated Harley's views on a LOT of things but especially The Last Jedi. Really great way of lookin at it. When they started talking about Kylo I got pumped because I agree first of all, Kylo has had my interest peaked since he walked onto Jakku in Episode 7. I loved him in 8 and there's just this ONE thing I hope to see in 9 which is, now that Kylo is the Supreme Leader, I hope he starts wearing his helmet again not because of face decay and physical appearance, but because of that conversation between Kylo and Snoke in 8. That convo tells you that Kylo just LIKES wearing the helmet. It makes him feel more like his grandfather and I fucking love that and I want him to start wearing it again immediately as a "fuck you" to Snoke and that whole back and fourth they had. I'm fine with the whole physical thing too though trust me, and of course I love the deeper meaning behind the helmet but I also want to see it just because he always just WANTED to wear it plus it's intimidating. Awesome Council thank you!

Humble Bugg that's fine if you would angry at a film because you don't like it. But you shouldn't attack other people for thier opinions or thier character. that's the point that we're trying to make the fan base is becoming toxic. The vocal minority is painting us Star Wars fans in a bad light.
@porgslife13956 жыл бұрын
Didn't anyone else notice how after Snoke told Kylo he had too much of his father's heart in him that at no point after that moment did anyone in the film ever refer to him as Kylo again? Only as Ben. Sit on that for a minute. It's important.

I don’t think the majority of people blindly hate or love TLJ. Yes, the fan base is divided. It’s been divided ever since ROTJ. A lot of people think TLJ is fresh and original. And other people think TLJ is unoriginal and a disservice to the original cast. In my opinion TLJ tries to put a twist on Empire and Return of the Jedi, but ends up coming off as a combination of those films just shuffled around. (Just my opinion)
@miggypopins12736 жыл бұрын
I think there are a lot more people who dislike the film than collider and other sources will have you believe. I just hate how they say that people are blindingly hating the movie when there are a lot of people who don’t like the film for very valid reasons..

Star Wars middle films also range from divisive -(the initial reaction to ESB) to outright despised (AotC), so that doesn't dispute the status of TLJ as divisive at best.

Miggy Popins I did not know what to think. I think I enjoyed TFA and RO more at the initial showing. And ROTS for that matter - it was a great cinema experience in 2005 anyway. TLJ just seems bland and labored in places. The opening scene for one, is just, by the numbers?

What Harley said about Kylo is so true. I am the same from the get go I’ve been enthralled by that story and it’s because one I love driver in the role and just the design of him but also like you said it’s something fairly unique especially in larger films. Usually villains are already bad or quickly become that way in these movies and to watch one actually progress over time has been enthralling. I also want to see the dark side delved into more in future projects but so far my absolute favorite thing about the sequels is Kylo ren as a character and seeing the opposite of the hero’s journey we’re so accustomed to. I think people undervalue how fresh that approach actually is.

Harley's TLJ breakdown at 16:20 was eloquent and really good. Harley's later comments about the Jango Fett seismic charges made me rewatch that clip from Attack of the Clones and I just realized something - the actors who play Jango and Boba are New Zealanders, but I think in Rebels the guy who plays the clone trooper Rex is American. but does an Australian accent. Maybe Dee Bradley Baker doesn't know what Kiwi's sound like vs Ozzie's. Never noticed that before.

I just watched TLJ again last night, and I noticed something in the opening bomber sequence that I haven't seen brought up, and it involves the first person in TLJ who seemingly uses the Force, and it may surprise you. While Paige is kicking the ladder, she holds her necklace and closes her eyes, and it flashes quickly to Leia sensing something. At first few watches I thought maybe Leia had helped, but it's now clear that Paige used the Force and Leia picked up on it. It reinforces that the Force is inherent in all of us as Luke says. I wonder what if anything that could mean for Rose?

I don't necessarily want my theories (or theories I've heard from others) to be true because what's the fun in everything playing out as expected? I like to be surprised. The problem is that with 2 years between movies, speculation is all we have in the meantime, which makes it very hard for the storytellers to surprise us. It almost makes me think that Johnson was actively avoiding all the popular theories out there which really limited his options. I still think he could have come up with a more interesting story of his own though regardless of who Snoke and Rey were or weren't, just my opinion.

Guys, if Han Solo in ANH is about 30-35 yrs old, then Han Solo in Solo is at least 10 years younger. Remember, he meets Chewbacca in this film, he gets the Falcon. In Empire, Han hasn't seen Lando for years. Han and Lando in this film are probably about Luke's age in ANH - they are not going to walk into the cantina at the end!!!

I agree about the thirty year gap. I don't look at it as missing story, because it didn't come up in the movie. There's lots of time for these stories to be told. I can't wait to read about Luke's adventures. I loved what little we got in Battlefront 2.

I sort of agree with Kristian. I think we needed to see Broom Kid do his thing at some point in Episode 8...or even Episode 9, in order to establish the inspiration theme, but it didn't NEED to end Episode 8, and there would have been more powerful Episode 8 endings to have.

He accomplished the same goal and nobody was harmed (except for himself actually) that’s a true Jedi. Feel however you do about the movie and how these things were executed but I think that is damn beautiful.

lately i think people have started to think the 'kessel run' is some kinda competition.... no no no! the kessel run is a route used by the smugglers and its a dangerous run in and out... han was a master at it, or least we assume he was. like going into a dangerous place to pick up something/someone and head back with that for cash. Han could manage it in least distance because the falcon covered more distance in less time i.e. making the physical distance seem shorter, hense 12 parsecs. I think were gonna see r2-d2 and 3PO at the space mines of kessel as cameos, because 3PO mentions it in a new hope so its likely he has memory of it for a reason...

Kylo should be redeemed I ain’t here for a rotj repeat, I don’t want to see the last skywalker/solo die as a horrible villain that’s not what the story is about.

I think having Leia Hyperspace bash the First Order Flagship, with or without Holdo, would have been an okay send-off, but I'll be satisfied with whatever method they now use to "write" her out, perhaps in the Episode 9 screen crawl. I wouldn't even mind a memorial scene, but, as Ken said, her story is complete, her legacy will live on....

I want two things from the Obi-Wan film: Obi-Wan communing with Qui-Gon and a proper, definitive explanation of Force ghosts and that lore; and, a flashback of Obi-Wan helping Anakin build the Skywalker lightsaber. We’ve only ever seen that process in Clone Wars and, really, that saber is the Excalibur of the series...

First time I ever posted a comment. I have watched since a few months before THE FORCE AWAKENS. I also wish we could debate these movies without venom spewed at one another. I, like Christian, enjoyed but did not love THE LAST JEDI the first watch. On second viewing, I liked it so much more. On my third viewing, it bridged the gap between the first and second viewing. Very good STAR WARS. film. I am still waiting for greatness though.

I like what Kristian's saying about Ben diving deeper into his Vader worship. Give this boy a new helmet!

@kristianharloff - regarding Ezra, you mentioned "we now know Ezra isnt bennicio del toro's character" ....do we? Something stood out to me in TLJ with 'DJ' - he reminded me so much of Ezra with how good he was at getting in and out of locked doors! In Rebels, if theres a door code to break Ezra gets the nod every time. The character of DJ seemed to me, to be somebody who had gone through so much,(probably including loss) that he now follows nobody and reverted to how we found him at the beginning of Rebels?! Anyway...just a theory but we still dont know a lot about DJ other than the line "today they blow you up, tomorrow you blow them up - dont join" !!

Did I miss something, I did not notice Kylo's face decaying. And this is like the 3rd time Kristian has said that.

I am hoping we get some insight into what the new cannon will be for Chewbacca's backstory specifically how he survived enslavement and death during the destruction of The Death Star.
