Deadpool & Wolverine Interview: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman & Shawn Levy

This summer will bring us one of the most highly-anticipated superhero team-ups in the form of Deadpool & Wolverine. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie will see Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) making his official debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a trippy multiverse tale that finds the Merc With a Mouth tangled up with the Time Variance Authority, and eventually teaming up with a variant of everyone's favorite surly mutant, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Despite the comedic tone of much of the film's advertising, the final trailer released for the movie teases that this will be an emotional adventure for the pair of heroes, as Deadpool enlists Wolverine to help him save the only family he knows.
In a new interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, stars Reynolds and Jackman, and director, writer and producer Shawn Levy sat down to talk about how Deadpool & Wolverine subverts audience expectations of a superhero movie. They also talk about how they landed on the idea of Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), how each of the movie's fight scenes were designed, and Jackman's emotional reaction to an early stunt video.

6:36 Literally *everything* Ryan says here is 100%, absolutely on point. I love it. They not only know what they're doing, but they know how art works, how stories work, and how to say "I don't know where this story is going; anyone else have ideas?" Because it's not just film, all stories work that way: there is a sensible and organic progression of character choices that make everything happen, and you've got to listen to those. And sometimes, you'll miss something, and figuring out what the characters would do now is impossible -- writer's block. But other people? Other people might know *exactly* what the characters would do, how they'd move, what they'd say... and if you ask, they're surely willing to tell you. The worst writing often comes from people who "want" their characters to "do this thing", so they just write "[Character] does this thing". And the audience/reader is left going, "...but... why would they do that?!" Writing fiction is not the job for a controlling god; it is one for an archivist. True artists here.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but i think the storyline they chose was pretty shit. They decided to do all that hocus pocus garbage instead of a real gripping story. It may break 1B at the box office but thats only because.. 1. Hugh jackman is wolverine again 2. Most people seen it twice if not three times just to makes sense of the story/catch the eastereggs. Its was a decent pipcorn flick but i dont think its a classic by any means. Long live Hugh Jackman as wolverine though! Till he's 90 indeed
